Next Step for School Merger Talks

WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP IN BURT COUNTY MERGER TALKS?

By Fred Hansen, Superintendent LDNE                 November 18, 2013

Discussion continues on the possibility of a consolidation of three school districts in Burt County.  The Lyons-Decatur Northeast school board heard from 14 speakers and 4 letters were read at the special meeting held November 5, 2013 intended to allow for public input on the topic of consolidation.

Many of the 14 speakers thought the idea of a countywide school district was too large.  Some of the speakers thought the countywide school district would kill the Lyons community because they felt the elementary in Lyons would not stay open for very many years.  Many of the speakers understood the need to do something but they expressed the idea to do something “on a smaller basis”.  Some of those speakers mentioned the idea of merging with Oakland-Craig only.  Just under half of the speakers encouraged the board to continue talking and not take any option off the table.  A few speakers felt the process was moving too fast and others wanted to pursue other ideas to meet the dwindling enrollment issue facing Lyons-Decatur Northeast.

The Lyons-Decatur School Board discussed all these comments and concerns at their regular school board meeting held on Monday, November 11, 2013.  The consolidation committee to study the countywide school merger idea suggested that each school board take a vote at their November board meeting to provide direction for the consolidation committee.  Oakland-Craig and Tekamah-Herman school boards both voted to continue talks.  Lyons-Decatur Northeast school board decided to slow down and discuss the idea at the November meeting.  After a lengthy discussion on the idea, President Preston informed the board that the vote to continue talks would be on the agenda for possible board approval in the December meeting.  Around a dozen patrons/parents were visitors at this November meeting to hear the board’s discussion.

Steve Williams, of Harding & Shultz, spoke at the public input meeting on November 5, 2013.   The Harding & Shultz firm is used by all three school districts so the three Superintendents directed Mr. Williams to write up the same agenda item and motion to be used by the school boards in their November or December meeting.

Since Lyon-Decatur Northeast decided to wait on this vote I want to share with the public the agenda item and motion that will be provided to the LDNE board at the December meeting if they choose to use it.  Here is the agenda item and motion:

Agenda Item

Review, consider, and take all necessary action to create the Reorganization Committee and designate its members.

Motion

I move that the board create the Reorganization Committee and designate and appoint the following individuals as members of the committee: ____________________________________________.

As you can see, the motion officially sets up the reorganization committee.  It is not a vote to merge.  If the LDNE board approves the motion the LDNE committee meets with the O-C and T-H committees to determine if they can agree on a merger petition.  If this three-board committee approves a petition it must come back to each school board for their approve before it is sent to the State Reorganization committee for approval.

For Harding & Shultz to represent all three school boards, each board must pass a motion to allow for “multiple-entity school district reorganization representation”.  Therefore, there will also be an agenda item and motion to allow for this representation on the December agenda.  O-C and T-H will also have this motion on their December agenda.

Miller is National 4-H Congress Winner

Brent Miller

Brent Miller

onal 4-H Congress Winner:

Brent Miller of Lyons will eat his Thanksgiving turkey this week and head for the airport to take part in the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Georgia. This prestigious 4-H event has taken place in some form or another since 1922.

Miller will be attending as the result of his 4-H efforts recorded in the 4-H Career Portfolio. This is a comprehensive record book of 4-H project accomplishments, 4-H leadership, community service, volunteer work, citizenship, educational experiences, and non 4-H experiences. After evaluation at the state level he was selected to represent Nebraska in the Animal Science curriculum area at the National 4-H congress in Atlanta, Georgia on November 29th to December 3rd, 2013. He will be one of 25 delegates from the state Nebraska attending the National 4-H Congress.

Brent has been involved in the poultry and sheep projects showing these animals at county, Fremont, State Fair, Ak-Sar-Ben and many area progress shows.  Taking this curriculum area to a new level, he began participating in the P.A.S.E. (Premier Animal Science Events) by attending Meats ID, Skill-a Thon, and Livestock Judging practices with Cuming county 4-Hers and competing on teams at state competition. A highlight was in 2012 when they were the state winning team in the P.A.S.E. Meats ID contest. The team was then able to represent Nebraska at the American Royal National 4-H Meat Judging and Identification Contest.

Other than the Animal Science project and activities he have been involved in the Science and Technology projects of woodworking, Aerospace, and electricity, the Environmental-Education projects of Homes for Wildlife and Shooting Sports, Plant Science projects of Horticulture and Floriculture, Healthy Lifestyle (Foods) projects and Consumer and Family Science projects including Home Environment and Sewing.

Brent has been the Lil’ Green 4-H Mascot at the Nebraska State Fair for 7 years and really enjoyed his time inside the inflatable mascot…except when it was REALLY hot! He also enjoyed the opportunity to attend many different 4-H camps and getting to meet new 4-H members at them.

Miller said this of his 4-H experiences: “Through both winning, and losing I have learned valuable lessons that will impact me throughout the rest of my life and have shaped me into the person I am. 4-H has allowed me to travel, meet new people, learn many life lessons, and develop and learn new skills. In the future I will be going to college and want to major in something agricultural. 4-H has made me who I am, and without the influence of 4-H on my life, I would be a completely different person. I believe that 4-H is an amazing organization that helps to develop talents and skills of everyone involved. It helps shape people into the persons they become and teaches many life lessons along the way.”

For the first time in decades, Professional Wrestling returns to small-town Nebraska. Magnum Pro Wrestling is a Council Bluffs Iowa based company and has been producing shows through-out Iowa for many years. It’s a small company of highly talented performers that have literally traveled the world perfecting their craft.

For instance, Jaysin Strife holds the World Record for the longest wrestling match ever at seven hours. He has also performed in Germany and well as regularly working in California.

And last but certainly not least, Magnum Pro Champion Hype Gotti. Hype has been wrestling 12 years. He too has been seen all over the U.S. and touts his numerous matches vs.  New Japan/TNA  star Alex Shelly,  Current WWE Superstar Seth Rollins , and  TNA star Sonjay Dutt as his favorites. He says he does it because it makes me feel more alive than anything.

This is just the tip of the iceberg of the talent. Magnum Pro contains Big men, Small men, Monsters, Strongmen and High Flyers. As well as a local connection to Oakland! Former/Original Omaha Wrestling Association (OWA) Hardcore Champion and Oakland resident Donnie Dodge, who works under the name HUSKA, will dust off his act and return to the ring in for the first time in over a decade.

LDNE Volleyball Season Wrap-Up

By Clare Wiltse

The Lyons-Decatur Volleyball team finished the year with a District Runner-Up Plaque, but a rugged schedule that included three State qualifiers eliminated them from a winning record. Two EHC teams were in the elite eight.  Howells-Dodge and Humphrey/LHF each beast LDNE twice.

Northeast finished with an 11-23 record.  The team with four seniors had five more wins that in 2012. They had a three match winning streak early in October. The Cougars finished with a 3-8 mark against EHC teams.  At the EHC tournament, they took twelfth in the sixteen team contest.  They got encouragement with an win over a D-2 team, Bancroft-Rosalie who would be in their sub-district.

After playing against larger schools during the year, Northeast’s move to the NSAA D-2 playoffs seemed like a snap.  Northeast had a pair of 3-1 wins to move to the District finals.  They had wins over Winside and Bancroft-Rosalie, who had as winning record. Their season came to an end as fourth rated Mead defeated the L-D girls in three hard fought sets.

The 2013 rotation included four seniors, two sophomores, a junior and freshman.  Senior Hannah Christiansen and junior Darcey Simonsen were named honorable mention members of the EHC  All Conference team.  Hannah led the team in Ace Serves and Blocks.  Darcey was a provided a stable ball handler as she had had 453 Set Assists.

Team leaders were Brianne Haskell with 245 kill while Hannah Christiansen followed with 130.  Hannah topped the team with 41 aces with Brianne having 36.  Brianne topped the team in digs with 395 while libero Sarah Alford had 338.  Blocking found Vanessa Peterson on top with 122 with Hannah at 98.

The team says goodbye to four seniors.  Haley Bacon, Vanessa Peterson and Hannah Christiansen had three years on varsity.  Sarah Alford was on varsity the last two years.

The 2014 team will look forward to a team with four experienced players.  Darcey Simonsen will be a senior setter. Brianne Haskell and Maddie Ronnfeldt will be juniors and Kelly Wakeley will be coming off a learning freshman year.
