What Are You Thankful For?


Today, and every day, I am thankful for this little ray of sunshine, Penelope. We will be celebrating her 3rd birthday today.

And, a year ago tomorrow, we found out she was going to have a baby brother! Another ray of sunshine, Rowen!

Our precious grandkids, Rowen, 6 months, and Penelope, very close to 3 years old. Nene and Papa can’t wait to see you soon! We are going to celebrate Peeps 3rd birthday!

Pamela K. Hancock, 73, of Fremont NE, Formerly of Tekamah NE


Pamela K. Hancock, 73 years, of Fremont, NE died Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at Fremont Medical Health Center. Pamela was born November 24, 1943 in San Francisco, California to Ralph and Mable (Lewis) Petet.

She lived in San Francisco during World War II and moved to Comstock, NE and then to Tekamah, NE. She graduated from 8th grade at District #8 at Tekamah and graduated in 1961 from Tekamah High School. She moved to Fremont in 1961. Pamela married Lawrence D. Hancock on November 9, 1962 and they later divorced. He preceded her in death on November 14, 2013. She retired in 2010 from Hormel Foods in Fremont after thirty-four years of employment.

Pam was a member of First Baptist Church in Fremont, a very proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a former member of a Red Hat Society. She volunteered at Fremont Health Medical Center. She was an avid genealogist, Huskers Fan and Elvis Fan. She traveled as much as possible with family and friends and had planned a trip for later this winter. She visited Graceland multiple times and enjoyed flowers and gardening. She loved her dog, Dutchess, a Boston terrier.

She is survived by sons, Scott (Angie) Hancock, Chris Hancock all of Fremont and Tyler (Michelle) Hancock of Arlington, NE; brother, Jerry (JoAnn) Petet of West Point, NE; sister, Sharon Sohl of Columbus, NE; and grandchildren, Nathan Hancock, Sara Hancock, Caleb Hancock, Jordyn Hancock, Brady Hancock, and Cameron Hancock.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral Service will be at 9:30 A.M., Saturday, November 18, 2017 at First Baptist Church in Fremont. The Rev. Leland Foreman and Rev. Richard Crooks will officiate. Visitation on Friday from 5 PM to 8 PM at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont and forty-five minutes prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.

Memorials may be directed to the family for further designation or to the Daughters of the American Revolution.

James Q. Carlson, 74 years, of Oakland, Nebraska, passed away Monday, November 13, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Waffle Supper at Oakland Heights


Oakland Heights will be hosting a waffle supper Thursday, November 16th at 5:30 p.m. Stop in and enjoy a delicious meal!

This next week is the monthly Waffle Supper at 5:30 pm on Thursday November 16th, and on Saturday November 18th the Rusty Buckets will be here to perform at 2:30 pm. Next week on Wednesday November 22nd at 2:30 pm  is our Thanksgiving service given by First Lutheran Church. On Thursday November 23rd is Thanksgiving and the residents will be having a tradition Thanksgiving Day Dinner starting at 11:30 am. On Friday is the Nebraska Football game starting at 3:00 pm.

Church Service for Sunday November 19th  will be given by the Evangelical Free Church at 2:30 pm with a luncheon following service.

Activities for the week of November 20th  to November 25th    are as follows, reading with Suzanne, Manicures, Sing A Long, Game Day,  Bingo the w/Staff, Mike Barger,  Bell choir practice, Saturday Video, Nebraska Football, and Lawrence Walk.

Caroline (Beckmann) Zila, 67, of Thurston NE


Caroline Mae (Beckmann) Zila, 67, of Thurston, Nebraska passed away Monday, November 13, 2017 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, NE. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pender: Pastor Robert Schilling will be officiating. The visitation will be Friday, November 17, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Pender. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Pender.

Caroline was born August 22, 1950 to Alfred and Orma (Witt) Beckmann in Pender. She graduated from Pender High School in May of 1968. Caroline married Donald Melvern Zila on December 26, 1969 at St. John’s Lutheran Church and the couple had three children.  Don and Caroline owned Zees Greenhouse for many years. She enjoyed word finds, puzzles, reading, and playing games, especially cards. Caroline loved coloring with and spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids. Caroline was a quiet, selfless woman who did anything for her family and will be greatly missed.

Caroline is survived by her husband, Don Zila of Thurston, NE; daughters, Jeanette (Maurice) Norton of West Point, NE, Patti (Mike) Owen of Omaha, NE, Christine (Mike) Krueger of Omaha, NE; sisters, Marie (Larry) Sokol, JoAnn (Scott) Henrickson, Leora (Mark) Peterson; brothers, Marlin (Ruth) Beckmann, Dale (Becky) Beckmann, Alvin (Barb) Beckmann; grandchildren, Lacy (Bobby) Dugan, Alex (Jamie) Norton, Ellen, Aiden and Libbie Owen; great grandchildren, Emma and Braden Dugan; grand-dog, Peanut Krueger; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred Beckmann in November of 1997 and Orma Beckmann in September of 2016.

Caregiver Support Group to Meet at Bancroft Senior Center


The monthly Caregiver Support Group will meet November 20 at the Bancroft Senior Center at 2:00 p.m.

All caregivers are invited to come and enjoy the afternoon with us.

Informational topics are presented and thoughts are shared on how to keep the people we care for comfortable and happy.
