Mary Ann Rose (Cerny) Petersen, 90, of Lyons NE


Mary Ann Rose (Cerny) Petersen was born on September 4, 1924 to Frank and Marie (Studnicka) Cerny in rural Dodge, Nebraska. She passed away on July 22, 2015, at the age of 90 years, at Oakland Mercy Hospital in Oakland, Nebraska after a brief illness.

Mary Ann attended a rural school northeast of Dodge. In the 1930s the family moved northeast of Scribner, Nebraska, where she graduated from Scribner High School with the class of 1942. During World War II, Mary Ann was employed by the Rogers Tent and Awning Company in Fremont, Nebraska, making army tents for soldiers. After the war, she was employed at Fremont Guide and Tribune, and later worked as a receptionist for Drs. Van Metre and Hill in Fremont.

Mary Ann married Leeby R. Petersen of Lyons, Nebraska on January 28, 1948. He was the son of Hans and Christine (Koch) Petersen. They made the Lyons area their home, farming in the Liberty area, west of town.

Later in 1968, Mary Ann worked in Lyons at the Logan Valley Manor as an LPN, until she retired in 1981. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, UMW and VFW Auxiliaries, Liberty Club, Westside Aid and the Even Dozen Extension Club. Mary Ann enjoyed painting, gardening, crocheting, embroidery and collecting poems. One of the greatest enjoyments, later in life, was playing dominos with family and friends, and she usually won.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Leeby (1985); sister, Evelyn Legband; brothers, Alvin and Marvin Cerny; seven brothers-in-law; eight sisters-in-law.

She is survived by her three children, Mary (Robert) Leifert of West Richland, WA, Jean (Craig) Novak of Loveland, CO, Richard (Lana) Petersen of Lyons; 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, a host of very close friends and relatives.

Mary Ann enjoyed life fully to the end. She will be remembered for her loving and kind-hearted ways with all people that she came in contact with. Mary Ann will be remembered for her love of life.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Friday, July 24, 2015 10:30 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church in Lyons.

VISITATION: Thursday 5:30-8 p.m., with family receiving friends at Pelan Funeral Services Lyons. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to services at the church.

Lorna Webster, 84, of Lyons NE


LORNA WEBSTER, 84 years, of Lyons, Nebraska, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at the Oakland Mercy Hospital in Oakland, Nebraska from heart failure.

Lorna Helen Suhr was born to Rudolph and Adeline Suhr on August 22, 1930 on a farm northwest of Pender, Nebraska.

Lorna graduated from Pender High School. She married Raymond Lewis Webster on May 29, 1948. They lived east of Lyons until 1952, when they moved east of Lyons, where she resided until she became ill in November 2014.

Lorna’s passion was her children and grandchildren. She loved crocheting, quilting, and all forms of needlework. She spent hours crocheting dolls, hand quilting, and embroidering various treats for her children and grandchildren. Lorna taught, by example, the meaning of love and patience to all of her family.

Lorna was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond.

Survivors include two sisters-in-laws, Tootie Webster, of Lyons, Eleanor Webster, of Pender; four children: two sons, Lyle Webster, of Lyons, Lynn (Holly) Webster, of Salt Lake City, UT; two daughters, Wanda (Ron) Brovont, of Lyons, Sonja (David) Errick of Salt Lake City; 4 grandchildren, Kim (Dale) Beckstrom, Tim (Cristina) Brovont, Becky (fiancé Fred), Matt; 3 great grandchildren, Kalter & Raymond Beckstrom, Wesley Brovont and another little Brovont on the way.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Saturday, January 31, 2015, 9:30 am, at the First Presbyterian Church in Lyons.

VISITATION: Friday, 6-8 pm with family receiving friends at Pelan Funeral Services in Lyons. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour prior to service.

BURIAL: Blair Cemetery, Blair, Nebraska

Family and Friends are invited to the family farm (1698 County Road 19), at 1 pm for a gathering following the graveside services in Blair.

Jack Renault Nielsen, 90, of Lyons NE


JACK RENAULT NIELSEN, 90 years, of Lyons, Nebraska, passed away Thursday, January 1, 2015, at Oakland Mercy Hospital in Oakland, Nebraska.

Jack was born November 10, 1924 near Cozad, Nebraska, to Peter and Andrea (Jensen) Nielsen. The fourth of six children, he moved to Bancroft at a young age, and then on to Burt County for the remainder of his life.

He served in the Army in occupied Japan, as the war had ended while he was shipping out.

He met his wife, as she was the teacher at Moore School, and boarded with the Nielsens. They were married August 9, 1949. To this union were born three sons, John Richard in 1952, Mark Leslie in 1954 and Michael Christian in 1958. Jack adopted Betty’s daughter Jerrianne. Son Mark passed in 1956, Michael passed in 1971, and John in 2013.

Jack and Betty celebrated their 60th anniversary in August 2009.

Jack was very fond of farming and raising livestock. He loved life on the farm. He enjoyed polka music. He and Betty enjoyed square dancing, even in Hawaii, that was a special trip.

He and Betty moved to Lyons in 1983. He was recognized as he went for his daily drive in his red pickup. Jack always enjoyed visiting and learning.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; three sons; two sisters; three brothers.

He leaves to mourn, daughter, Jerri (Milt) Schreiner of Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Mark Booth, of Omaha,  Rachael Nielsen, of Gillette, WY, Jamie Nielsen, of Whitney, NE; three step-grandchildren, Julie (Joe) Wynn, of Omaha, Shannon Barron, of Hay Springs, NE, Kelly Turnbull, of Houston, TX; two great grandchildren, Alayna and Jack Rudloff.

TWILA MAE VAVRA, 75 years, of Lyons, Nebraska, passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2014, in Bancroft, Nebraska.

Twila was born August 15, 1938, at Pender, Nebraska, the daughter of Anton and Wavia (Twyford) Fendrick. She attended country school near her home and high school in Thurston, Nebraska.

On April 24, 1960, Twila married Dale Vavra at the United Methodist Church in Thurston. To this marriage three children were born, Curtis, Debbie and Lance.  They lived on a farm northeast of Rosalie, Nebraska, and then moved to the home place, where they farmed until moving into Lyons in 1985. Twila was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bancroft.

Twila loved her flowers and spent countless hours gardening in her yard on the farm. She enjoyed spending time with her grandkids and going out with her sisters, working on needlepoint or trying her best to beat Dale at a game of cards.

She was preceded by her parents and brother and sister-in-law, Franklin and Myrna Fendrick.

Survivors include her husband, Dale of Lyons; children and their spouses, Curtis and Rhonda Vavra of Decatur, NE, Debbie and Bill Witt, Lance and Lynette Vavra all of Rosalie;  brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold  and Darlene Fendrick of Arcata, CA, Bob and Pat Fendrick of Pender, Anton and Pam Fendrick Jr. of Tallahassee, FL; sisters, Marlene Abendroth of Bancroft; Betty Meister of Pearson, IA; seven grandchildren, Brantley  and Melissa Vavra,  Patrick (Jami)  Erickson, Anthony  and Colten Ruzicka, Tyler and Garret Vavra; five great grandchildren, Hadee and Kaylee, Amara, Caleb and Savannah ; many family and host of friends.

DON W. SVENDSEN, 80 years, of Lyons, Nebraska, passed away, Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, Nebraska.

Don was born April 19, 1934, in rural Lyons, to Pete and Fern (Wiley) Svendsen. He was baptized in the Presbyterian Church at Divide Center, Nebraska. He attended country school at Wilson School in rural Lyons through the sixth grade and graduated from Lyons High School in 1952.

Don served in the U. S. Army and was honorably discharged January 31, 1956.

On December 3, 1957, Don and Marcella Ann McKeegan were united in marriage at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lyons. To this union five children were born:  Deb, Dave, Pam, Joe and Lyn. Don custom farmed for many years and operated Svendsen Sod from 1977 to 2006.

He enjoyed going to the local coffee shop to catch up with local news and share his opinions with anyone who would listen. For the last two years, Don had resided at Legacy Gardens in Pender.

Don was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Fern; sister, Sally Larsen; and beloved wife, Marcella.

Survivors include his five children and their spouses, Deb and Charlie Olson of Bancroft, NE, Dave and Tammy Svendsen of Pierce, NE, Pam and Roger Servold of Mead, CO, Joe and Julie Svendsen of Lyons, Lyn and Kent Steinmeyer of Bancroft; twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
