He led a renewed drive for public service and eventually provided federal support for the growing civil rights movement. His assassination on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas, sent shockwaves around the world and turned the all-too-human Kennedy into a larger-than-life heroic figure. To this day, historians continue to rank him among the best-loved presidents in American history.

This is how District 33 School was when Jeff Gilliland and Charles R. Landholm attended it many, many years ago. I have been unable to find any history on the school. If anyone would like to share their memories, or history, feel free to do so. Kathy (Johnson) Rennerfeldt first taught there before teaching at Oakland-Craig. She is currently retired. I contacted her, but she didn’t have any information for the paper. She did say she enjoyed her time teaching there. Charles R. Landholm submitted the photos.

The tree north of the Veteran’s Building has been adorned with lights for the Christmas season for some years now, bringing the holiday spirit to the community.
Some of the lights were destroyed earlier this summer, according to Julie Johnson, owner of Nelson’s Food Pride in Oakland. “Some of the lights on the tree were broken, thrown to the ground and stepped on,” Julie stated.
Oakland Police Chief Dan Jacobs was not aware of the lights being broken until a considerable amount of time had passed. “I didn’t know about it until sometime later when I was in the grocery store. There wasn’t much that could be done then,” Dan stated.
No worries though, the lights have been replaced. The tree will light up the Christmas season again this year!

Here are more facts about JFK:
He was born into one of America’s wealthiest families and parlayed an elite education and a reputation as a military hero into a successful run for Congress in 1946 and for the Senate in 1952. As president, Kennedy confronted mounting Cold War tensions in Cuba, Vietnam and elsewhere.

I thought I would share my new business sign with everyone. The sign was made by CBS Signs Inc. of Omaha. Don Denton, formerly of Oakland, is the General Manager. They did a great job. Unfortunately, my Nissan needs a car wash! But, the sign looks great. Thanks Don!!

Friday, November 22nd marks 50 years since the assassination of President Kennedy. I have decided to take this week and reflect back on his life and death. If you would have any memories you would like to share, please feel free to do so. i was only a few months old the day he died, so I don’t remember it. If you do and would like to share “where you were when” memories, I would love to publish them for others to read. Thank you. I will start with one fact and add others today and each day through Friday, and other things as I research and find them. I have a commemorative 25 year edition book about President Kennedy, now 25 years older, that I have been reading again too.
The first fact of today is:
John Kennedy was elected in 1960 as the 35th president of the United States. At the age of 43, John F. Kennedy became the youngest man and the first Roman Catholic to hold that office.
