The Lyons-Decatur music department held a winter recital Friday December, 14th. Everyone did a great job. Many students played “Jingle Bells”, Yannick Yessoufou on the piano, Rusty Hardeman on the trombome, Mason Lami on the French horn, Maggie White on the bells, and Brayden Anderson played the trumpet. Bow Whitley and Aaron Williams played “Medley” on the guitar. Andrew Schlichting played “Boil Them Cabbage”  on the Banjammer and his brother, Caleb Schlichting played “Ode to Joy” on the piano. Zach Hegge played “Up On The House Top” on the saxophone, on the trumpet Brennan Ferguson played “When the Saints”, on the saxophone Derek Petersen played “Jolly Old Saint Nicholas”, and Reid Preston played “Star Wars” on the trombone. Lena Horak sang “German Song” and Sophie Hsu played “Summer” on the piano. They also sang “Say Something” together while Sophie played the piano. What talent! The last student but definitely not the least, was Tatiayana Harris who sang “Royals”. Mary Goff played “Silent Night” on the piano proving that music can last a lifetime. Everyone did an amazing job at the recital! We hope to see you at the next one!

Common Saying, Meaning, History

Here is another common saying, meaning and history.
Blood is thicker than water.
Meaning: Family comes before everything else
History: In ancient Middle Eastern culture, blood rituals between men symbolized bonds that were far greater than those of family. The saying also has to do with “blood brothers,” because warriors who symbolically shared the blood they shed in battle together were said to have stronger bonds than biological brothers.

Meals on Wheels

The village board and the Bancroft Senior Center have been working to provide Meals on Wheels for the residents in the Bancroft city limits who are 60 years and older. The meals will be prepared by the Lyons Happy Days Senior Center and the suggested donation is $4.00 per meal. There needs to be 8 people or more who will take the meals Tuesday through Friday every week. We have a driver for 4 days a week but not on Mondays. If you are interested in having Meals on Wheels contact the senior center at 402-648-3387 by January 30. Our goal is to get this program implemented by February 4th. We also need people who will volunteer to deliver the meals to the people once they get to Bancroft.  Contact the senior center if you have any questions.

Wise Elected President

“I am honored. It is a privilege for me to serve,” stated Rachel Wise of Oakland, the newly elected President of the Nebraska State Board of Education.

Rachel was elected to the Board of Education in November of 2012 and began serving a four-year term in January of 2013. “I was voted in as President at the January 7th 2014 board meeting,” Rachel said. The term is for one year. There are a total of eight members on the board, each of who represent a geographic area of the state. “I will preside over the meetings, serve as a primary spokesperson for some of the issues on the board, establish the agenda for the year and for each meeting, with input from other board members and the commissioner, assign committees,” Rachel stated.

Rachel retired from full-time employment in June of 2012 with an extensive career in education. “I wanted to stay engaged in some capacity with education, which was the primary reason I ran for office,” Rachel said.

Some of Rachel’s goals are to continue to work with the legislature and Nebraska educators in developing an accountability system for Nebraska that meets the needs of the students and communities. “The continued work on the revision of Nebraska standards for language arts and math is also a priority for this year,” Rachel stated. “Other areas of interest include special education, gifted education, career and technical education as well as early childhood.”

Rachel looks at challenges as opportunities. “The board has an opportunity to work with a new commissioner in developing the vision for education and for the Nebraska Department of Education that meets the needs of Nebraska’s children,” Rachel said.

She will continue to submit monthly articles to Kat Country Hub, keeping the citizens of Nebraska apprised of the board’s activities.

Rachel and her husband Gordon Nelson are rural Oakland residents.

Kats’ Korner

Other than a very cold day or two, hasn’t January’s weather been wonderful?

It is so nice to go for a walk, or enjoy any outside activities when being inside is the norm for January.

As unpredictable as Nebraska weather is, who knows what is next? I am not one to look at a seven or ten day forecast, worry or dread, what a meteorologist has predicted.

I believe in taking it one day at a time.

Last year, it snowed on May 1st! Not a big snow, but still snow. One can never tell what the weather will bring.

When morning comes is the best time to determine if the weatherman is right or wrong.

Spring will be here before we know it. I am envisioning hot July days lounging in our pool!

Are you a blood donor?

January is National Blood Donor Month.

I have donated blood only one time. I was a senior in high school. The students, only those being of age to give blood, challenged the teachers. There wasn’t a prize involved. The goal was to see who had the most individuals donating blood, the students or the teachers.

Truthfully, I don’t remember who won the contest. It wasn’t about winning. It was about doing the right thing for those in need.

I felt horrible after I had given blood. I went home and slept for three hours! I sadly admit that I haven’t given blood since.

I try to convince myself to do so, that I will be fine. I know it is the right thing to do.

Maybe I will get it done this year.

The one resolution I made. I hope I accomplish it!

We went shopping the weekend after Christmas.

I was shocked to see summer clothes already! I know that is how the retail world works, but I want to buy sweaters!

I found a gorgeous one on a clearance rack. That is the kind of shopping I like! Sales, clearance, anything that isn’t full price!

I will be in the mood for summer clothes when it is summer!

I hope your New Year has had a great beginning.

I also hope the entire year, and all the years to come, find you happy and healthy.

Happy January! To me, it is the longest month of the year. If the weather continues on this path, I could change my mind.

God Bless you until we meet again!
