The Cougars boys had an easy warm-up for 2014 with a 62-26 drubbing of winless Allen on January 3.  The Eagles fall to 0-8 while the Cougars stand at 3-4.

The coach took little pleasure in the easy win as the heart of the season starts in January.

“The next six games will be key for our season,” said Coach Lahm.  We could be 9-4 or we could be 3-13.  They are all winnable, but we have to play our best.  They are all going to be well contested.”

The opponents for the Cougars in the next three weeks are (3-6) Tekamah-Herman, (6-2) Mead, (4-5) Wakefield, (6-3) Cedar Bluffs, and (4-6) Humphrey Lindsay/Holy Family.

The Cougars never trailed against Allen.  Five different Players put in points as Northeast opened a 15-4 first quarter lead.  Bobby Simpson led the way with two treys.

By half time the lead grew to 39-10.  In the second half Coach Lahm turned the game   over to the underclassmen.  They outscored Allen 23-16.  “It was nice to give them a chance to play.  We are hoping that some of the other players will be inspired to work for a varsity uniform.”

Northeast connected on 24 of 43 shots while holding Allen to 8 of  26 shooting.  Dakota Riecken, Bobby Simpson and Chevy Henneman scored in double figures.  LDNE  had a 28-11 advantage in rebounding with David Bishop leading the way with 8.

Northeast hosts Tekamah-Herman next Friday.  On Saturday,  they travel to Mead for a 2:00 PM contest.

New School Record Set by Lady Cougar Lexie Bacon

By Clare Wiltse

Sports Contributor

The Lady Cougars started the 2014 year with a loss to (4-5) 58-45.  They head into a busy January with contests against seven teams with winning records.  Included in the schedule are two C-2 power houses (8-1) Pender and (10-0) Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family.

The Cougars got off to a great start as they got points from five players in the first period.

Darcey Simonsen, Brianne Haskell, Abby Peterson, and Kelly Wakeley all scored goals.  With Vanessa Peterson free shot they tied the Eagles at eleven.

The wheels slowed in the second period.  Allen stepped up the pressure with their zone defense.  After an early score by Haley Bacon the team went to the four minute mark before Brianne Haskell added a free throw.  Allen had gained a three point advantage.  Another Haskell basket brought it back to 17-16.  Allen had a 12 to 3 run  to close out the half.

Allen moved out to a 33 to 19 lead in the third period as they scored the first six points of the half. The Bacons scored all the points for the Cougars as  freshman Lexie scored five points and senior Haley closed scoring with a basket.  Northeast trailed 39-26.

Allen rattled off seven straight points to start the fourth period as they build a twenty point lead.  The Cougars turned to the long ball to try and reel in the high flying Eagles.

.Northeast  made four three pointers in the last two minutes to cut a twenty two point deficit down to the final score of 58-45.  Lexie Bacon hit on five of eight attempts from behind the arc in the fourth period.  Classmate Kelly Wakeley closed the scoring with a three pointer.

Lexie Bacon had a game-high 20 points to lead the Cougars.  She had six three pointers along with a deuce.  Her six threes is a new school record.  It erased the mark of five set by Brandi Bovee in 1998 against Dodge and matched by Ashley Bacon against Logan View in 2010.

Northeast will take on  (5-4)Tekamah-Herman and (5-2) Mead this weekend.

Helen I. Cram, 80 of Lyons, NE

Helen Cram

Helen Cram

HELEN I. CRAM, 80 years, of Lyons, passed away Monday, January 6, 2014, at her home in Lyons.

It is December, 1933 and Arnold and Alice (Launsby) Nelsen have been awaiting the birth of their second child.  For a time on December 25th, they thought that this young infant was about to share the birthday of Jesus Christ…well it wasn’t to happen. They continued on with the waiting game…tomorrow, the 26th was Papa Arnold’s birthday. The sharing could still be an honor. It was not to be…but on the 27th day of December little Helen Ilene made this day hers. Her grandmamma (Bestama) Launsby was celebrating her birthday on this day also. We almost all can claim our birthday as a special day and all should accept such a special gift from our Heavenly Father with great appreciation.
My early life was pretty much run of the mill… I remember a pretty good life. I was unaware of the whole happening of the great depression. And then World War II, Pearl Harbor day December 7th was the first worldly event that I became aware of and it still holds a life shuddering effect on me. The cost in human life is devastating. And it all should be remembered by each of us and we should remember, keep it remembered by our children and their children, and show our thankfulness for all military and people in the war zones. I sure am thankful that I lived in America.
In 1946 our family moved to Lyons, NE. I thought I had gone to a city. I graduated from Lyons School District #20. This whole experience growing up in Lyons was fine – we were really poor but….we had 2 – 3 grocery stores, a Gamble Store, a clothing store, a summer roller rink which became a dance hall in the winter, two movie theatres…plenty of babysitting for ‘mad money’, and a really good school with all of its studies and extracurricular activities. Good living all in all for kids.
In 1952, I met and was courted by the guy that became my sweet heart husband in 1952. We shared 48 years together and 6 special children, 17 grandchildren and 29+ (1 due in July) great grandchildren. As time goes on there will be more and more of our descendants. What a life!!
My childhood and teen time was enhanced by our Presbyterian Church. I am thankful for that. As a family we joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints – or LDS – or Mormon. (Not a cult at all).
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters, a brother, an infant daughter and her very special husband, Phil.
I am presuming that I am leaving to morn, my children, Shawnee Cram/Raymond of Estes Park, CO, and her children Mechelle and Morgan (Doug) and 5 grandchildren, Christina Wood of Hastings, NE and her children Jeremiah (Jamie) and Joselyn (Jacob) and 6 grandchildren, Brenda (Wade) Fleming of Williston, ND and their children Philip (Amanda), Austin ( Danielle), Chelsea (Curtis), Corban and Parker and 12 grandchildren, Robin (Frank) Weber of Gardner, KS and her children Wynter, Tylor, Ashleigh and Chase (Angela) and 3 grandchildren, Barbara Erin Cram and her daughter Tobi (Jeff) and 2 grandchildren, our one son, Heath (Kimberley) Cram of Lyons, NE and their children Kyrie (Chance), Phillip (Katie) and Alec (Jessica) and 1 grandchild with one due in July. I would like to name all the members in my special family but space is at a minimum. Phil’s two daughters by his first wife are not to be unmentioned here, Diana (Jerry) Case of Las Vegas, NV and their children Christian (Christine), Tracy (Adam), April, and Rhonda (Jared) and 11 grandchildren, and Vickie Heinz of Covina, CA.

All in all my whole life has been full of love and lots of activity. It has definitely been a great gift from Our Heavenly Father and his son Jesus Christ. Your life can be a special gift too. We have to take the good with the bad but keep your faith OR acquire that faith and you can have a great life too. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

John G.Neihardt Upcoming Event

  1. Steamboat Wrecks, January 19, 2014At 2:00 pm on Sunday, January 19th, self-proclaimed steamboat hunter, Pete King of Sergeant Bluff, will give a presentation on historic steamboat wrecks along what he calls “the deadliest mile,” the once winding, snaky section of the Missouri River just south of Onawa, IA and Decatur, NE. Providing historical photographs, King will describe the events and aftermath of several of the nearly a dozen sunken steamboats in this area (out of nearly 400 along the entire river). Fascinated by the story of the Bertrand, which sank in 1865 at DeSoto Bend, and the recovered artifacts on display at the museum near Missouri Valley, he began searching on his own using a magnetometer, which detects iron in the soil and, over the past 40 years he has uncovered 31 relics. He believes he has located one of these ships, the Nugget, a supply boat headed for Montana in 1866, buried in about 50 feet of mud. This is his major project now, working with the land owner to attempt excavation. It is yet a mystery whether it went down as a loaded boat, which will mean lots of artifacts, or as a salvaged boat, where the owners were able to off-load before it sank.

The program begins at 2 p.m. with a reception following; both are free and open to the public.
