Proud to Serve on Election Day

Frelon Danielson and Betty Hanna are two of many people who serve on the Burt County Election Board, assisting assisting voters of Oakland for many years. “I have been on the board for close to 60 years,” stated Frelon. Betty isn’t sure how many years she has served, “but I have done it for several years,” Betty said.

They can remember when the votes were counted at the polling place, the Oakland City Auditorium. “They were counted on the stage,” Betty stated. She is referring to the stage at the auditorium. “Now they have machines that do the counting,” Frelon said.

They arrive before the polls open at 8:00 a.m. and don’t stop working until after the polls close at 8:00 p.m. “I pick the ballots up the day before election at the courthouse then take them back to Tekamah once the polls are closed,” Frelon stated.

They both commented that not many people had come to vote. “There wasn’t as much to vote on locally, so maybe that is why,” Betty said. Those running for Oakland City Council and the Oakland-Craig School Board automatically moved to the November election.
