The monthly Caregiver Support Group will meet at the Bancroft Senior Center, this coming Monday, May 19 at 2:00 p.m. The meetings are very informal; various topics are discussed and those who attend are encouraged to share their ups and downs of being a caregiver. The information that is shared by those in attendance is kept confidential. If you are a caregiver and have never attended a meeting, please feel free to come and join us. Bancroft Senior Center News
* The senior center provides Information and Assistance to any individual who is looking for services for themselves or another person 60 years and older, the center manager and/or center participant can provide information to individuals on services available within the community. We link individuals to the services and opportunities that are available within or beyond the community itself. We will then establish adequate follow-up procedures to see that their needs were met. For more information call 402-648-3387.
*If you are 60 years and older and need information on programs designed to help keep you in your home longer or if you need legal help, contact Connie at 402-648-3387 or in the evening at 402-648-7648.
* We have the following medical equipment to loan out on an as need basis, wheel chair, bath seats, toilet seat riser and portable toilet chair, crutches or walkers. Call 402-648-3387 during office hours.
Meals on Wheels
Would you like to get Meals on Wheels? Anyone over the age of 60 years and lives within the city limits are eligible for these meals. You may sign up anytime for the Meals on Wheels program; you can get the meals delivered however many times you want them each week. You must call 402-687-2332 before 8:30 a.m. if you want a meal that day. The suggested donation for the meals is $4.00.
Refurbished Memorial Flowers are on sale at the senior center. We have a wonderful array of memorial wreaths, crosses and sprigs of flowers. Everyone is welcome to stop in to look and buy.
Weekly Activities:
Wed. May 14: Melody chimes practice at 9:00. Join us for coffee anytime during the day. Sign up for the pinochle tournament at 1:30.
Thurs.: May 15: Tai Chi class at 9:30 and the walking ex. class at 10:30. Stop in for coffee at 10:00. Sign up to play in the pitch tournament at 1:30.
Fri. May 16: Exercise class (FROG) at 10:00 come and join us. Center is closed this afternoon, rented for graduation.
Mon. May 19: The caregiver support group meeting is at 2:00 p.m.; all caregivers are welcome to attend.
Tues. May 20: Tai Chi class at 9:30 and the walking ex. class at 10:30. Stop in for coffee at 10:00. Come and play in the pitch tournament at 1:30. Our evening meal will be biscuits and sausage gravy serving from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. You are welcome to stay and play cards after the dishes are done.

Carl Rodney Larson 76, of Emerson, NE passed away Saturday, May 10, 2014 surrounded by his family at his home in Emerson, NE. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 15, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson, NE; Pastor Gretchen Ritola will be officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday May 14, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, with a Prayer service starting at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Emerson. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Emerson, NE.
Rodney was born on April 7, 1938, in Wakefield, NE the eldest of six children and only son born to Carl August Bertil Larson and Opal H. (Witt) Larson. He was baptized on June 19, 1938 and confirmed in faith on June 27, 1952 at the Mission Covenant Church in Wakefield, NE.
Rodney attended Pleasant Hill Country School, District #66 and graduated for Emerson High School in 1955, where he was involved in football, Vo Ag, FFA and Cornhusker Boys State. In 1956, he earned an Accountancy degree at Commercial Extension School of Commerce in Omaha, NE. Between 1956 and 1961, Rodney worked at several places in Omaha including: Ford Moving and Storage, selling Wear-Ever pots and pans, driving a taxi and Burlington Northern Railroad Company.
Rod and Elaine Brinkman were united in marriage on August 23, 1959 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson, NE. They resided in Omaha, NE until March of 1961 before moving to their farm southwest of Emerson. Rodney and Elaine retired in 2008, after 47 years of raising cattle, hogs and grain.
He was a member of the Emerson-Hubbard School Board, Farmers Coop Board of Directors, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Council, the Dixon County ASC Committee and the Emerson Township Board. Rodney was also a member of the Country Music Association of South Sioux City and the Eagles Aerie #2492 of South Sioux City, NE.
Rodney loved to fish, fly his airplane, and strum his guitar while singing and dancing at jam sessions. He attended many of his grandchildren’s activities.
He is survived by his wife; Elaine, children and their spouses; Barb and Larry Nitz of Lincoln, NE, Steve and Marcie Larson of Columbus, NE, grandchildren; Garrett, Jason and Andy Nitz of Lincoln, NE, Alex and Jessica Larson of Columbus, NE, sisters; Melba and Gene Lamb of Lawrence, KS, Bernita and Monte Johnson of Puyallup, WA, Wanda Vespucci of Omaha, NE, Jenene and Dale Kumbier of Maxwell, IA, Janette Hassler of Clive, IA, brother-in-law; Ron and Carol Brinkman of Emerson, NE and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Rodney is preceded in death by his parents; Bertil and Opal Larson, parents-in-law; Henry and Frances Brinkman, brother in law; Mike Vespucci, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

ARLENE A. WEATHERLY, 87 years, of Tekamah, Nebraska, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair, Nebraska.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: Saturday, May 17, 2014, 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Tekamah.
MEMORIAL GATHERING: Friday, May 16th, with the family receiving friends from 6 – 8 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Home in Tekamah.

JANICE RAMONA MALLETTE was born in Uehling, Nebraska, on November 10, 1928 to Thomas and Anna (Christensen) Mallette. She passed away, Thursday, May 8, 2014, at her home in Oakland, Nebraska at the age of 85.
She grew up on a farm south of Uehling and graduated from Uehling High School. She worked at the Main Street Cafe in Uehling where she first met Merlyn Nelson who she married October 16, 1949 at Westside Methodist Church of Oakland.
She kept busy raising their four children and working with the family Farm Implement business. As the kids got older she became an active member of the Oakland Rescue Squad. Janice and Merlyn were members of several couples bridge clubs through the years and she belonged to a ladies bridge club. Watching the weekend Golf tournaments on TV was important entertainment.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merlyn on Oct. 21, 2000.
Survivors include her daughter Deb (Bob) Dinslage of West Point, NE; sons, Tom of Omaha, NE, Steve (Vanessa) of Oakland, and Mark (Dawn) of Omaha; grandchildren, Jennifer (Jeff) Gall of Ogallala, NE, Matt (Katelynn) Dinslage of Lakeville, MN, Jared (Addie) Dinslage of Hastings, NE, Jordan (Amy) Dinslage of Kearney, NE, Andrew (Sarah) Nelson of Oakland, Ryan (Angela) Brummond of Bennington, NE, Joelle (Travis) Vogltance of Lincoln, NE; 19 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Aubery Felt of Omaha, and Joanne Popken, of Colorado Springs, CO.
FUNERAL SERVICE: Monday, May 12, 2014, 10:00 am at the First United Methodist Church in Oakland.
VISITATION: Sunday, 5-8 pm with family receiving friends from 6-8 pm at the Pelan Funeral Home in Oakland. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour prior to services.
BURIAL: Craig Cemetery, Craig, Nebraska

On Sunday, also Mother’s Day, it will be one year since I graduated from college. I was 50, but never gave up on my dream. To all of the graduates everywhere, never lose your vision, never give up hope. Believe in yourself! If you don’t, nobody else will! God Bless all of you!
