Susan Reppert, 61 of West Point, NE

Susan Reppert, age 61, of West Point, Nebraska passed away on July 22, 2014 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 25, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at St Paul Lutheran Church in West Point, NE. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in West Point. Visitation will be on Thursday, July 24th, from noon until 8p.m. with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Minnick Funeral Home in West Point. The family suggests memorials be directed to St. Paul Lutheran School in West Point, Nebraska. Minnick Funeral Home in West Point is in charge of arrangements.

Susan Reppert was born on February 22, 1953, to Forrest and Elaine (Minds) Hansen. She attended country school at District #40, and graduated from Wisner-Pilger High School in 1971. She attended Immanuel School of Nursing and graduated with her nursing diploma in 1974. On September 1, 1979 she was united in marriage to Clay Reppert at Christ Lutheran Church in Wisner, NE.

When her children were young Susan played on a softball league, taught Sunday School, and was a 4-H leader. Susan enjoyed taking care of the elderly and worked for many years as the Director of Nursing at Oakland Heights Nursing Home. She raised many litters of kittens & grew great gardens of flowers and vegetables at her farm just outside of West Point. No activity brought her greater joy though, than spending time with her family, especially her grandkids. She credits them for giving her the strength to fight her battle for as long as she did.

Susan was preceded in death by her mother, Elaine Hansen, and infant granddaughter, Emily Peterson.

Roundabout Construction Scheduled to Begin on Monday

There is a new start date for construction of the roundabout at Highway 77/32 junction. It was originally scheduled to begin on July 7th. “The contractor requested a short delay in the starting of the project due to rain delays on other projects they were working on this spring. The new start date will be July 28th,” stated Kevin Domogalla of the Nebraska Department of Roads.

The purpose of the roundabout is to reduce high speed right angle crashes at the intersection. There are five phases in constructing the roundabout and two stages, resulting in detours that may cause some travellers a longer distance in reaching their destination.

There will be 75 working days allowed for the contractor to finish the project. “Jeff Francis, our Project Manager, will be meeting with the contractor in the next few days to discuss their work schedule,” Domogalla said. “He will have a better idea after his meeting on what the first orders of business will be on the 28th”.

Anticipate delays and detours at the beginning of the week. Kat Country Hub will keep you informed of any scheduling changes

Julie Sherrel Nelsen, 55 of Fredonia KS Formerly of Lyons NE

Julie Sherrel Nelsen, 55, a resident of Fredonia, Kansas,formerly of Lyons, Nebraska passed away Monday, July 21, 2014, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2014. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Independence, Kansas with Rev. Roland Vega officiating. Burial will be in the White Cemetery near Lafontaine, Kansas. The family will receive friends at Timmons Funeral Home on Wednesday, 5-7 p.m. Memorials have been established in Julie’s name for Nathan Nelsen’s College Fund; USD 484 Education Foundation for FHS Music Department, or Wilson County 4-H, and contributions can be sent to or left with Timmons Funeral Home. Julie was born March 6, 1959 in Granite City, Illinois, the daughter of Earl and Violet (Parsons) Brunton. She graduated from Lyons High School, Lyons, Nebraska in 1977 and from Northeast Community College, Norfolk, Nebraska with an associate’s degree in business in 1979.

Julie married Mark Nelsen at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lyons, Nebraska on June 20, 1981. Since moving to Kansas in 1996, she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Independence, Kansas. The past 15 years, she was employed at Fredonia High School as the treasurer and bookkeeper. Currently Julie was a leader of the Sunflower-Go-Getters 4-H Club, treasurer of the FFA Alumni, and superintendent of the Rabbit Division of the Wilson County Fair. She was a strong supporter of the Fredonia School System, especially music, sports and agriculture. Some things Julie really enjoyed were creating and decorating cakes, especially wedding cakes and grandchildren’s birthday cakes. She kept track of their cattle, loved planting and caring for her flowers and garden, and was an avid Cornhusker fan.

2014 Burt County Fair is Almost Here!

It is time for the annual county reunion, better known as the Burt County Fair. The fun begins on Fri., Aug. 1st through Tues., Aug. 5th.

There are many animal shows throughout the fair. The 4-H’ers have been working hard in preparation of the fair to show their animals. There will be a dog show, cattle and hog show and a sheep show, to name a few. Those not in 4-H can bring rabbits, ducks, geese, etc. to display and be judged also.

One of the newer events has turned into quite a hit at the fair. “Bull riding will be on Sunday night again this year. It has been drawing a huge crowd each year, and will sure to be the same this year,” stated David Pearson, member of the Burt County Fair Board.

The price to attend the bull riding event is the same as last year: $10 for adults, ten years of age and under are admitted for free. “Last year there were 350 kids that got in free,” Pearson said.

The parade is also a big hit during the parade. Many entries from throughout the county and beyond participate in the fair parade each year. The parade begins at 4:00 p.m. on Sun., Aug. 3rd. It begins at Holmquist Lumber in Oakland, heading west, walking by the fairgrounds and ending in the Oakland Park.

There will also be a beer garden, what is called left field, this year. “There have been some additional drinking selections added to the list this year,” Pearson stated.

There will also be a one-man band on Tuesday evening. “Shawn Cole will be providing some great entertainment for the crowd,” Pearson said.

A complete listing of events is listed below on both poster displays. “This will be another great Burt County Fair! Come and have a great time,” Pearson stated.

Career Day at UNL

Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?  To help you explore different options for potential careers, you are invited to spend a day looking at a variety of career opportunities programs available at the University of Nebraska.

 

During a daylong tour at the University of Nebraska’s East Campus participants will explore programs in Vet Science, Ag Economics, Landscape Design, Bio-Medical, Hotel & Restaurant Management, and Ag Communications/ Journalism.  There will also be a tour of Memorial Stadium and the training facilities.

 

This is a great opportunity for all area girls and boys ages 14 to 17 and their parents. We will enjoy a nice meal before returning to home.

 

UNL Extension in Cuming County has taken the lead in planning this Career Day at UNL and they have invited any other students and their parent(s) to attend Wednesday, July 30, leaving from the Cuming County Courthouse in West Point at 6:45 a.m. for a fun day at the University.  The cost of the day will be $12.50 per person which will include transportation, lunch and supper.  Please pre-register with the UNL Extension office in Cuming County for the UNL Day by Friday, July 25.  To pre-register contact the Extension Office at 402/372-6006 and make checks payable to Cuming County 4-H Council.

Your Astronomy to the Next Level

OK.  So, you look up at the night sky and are familiar with some of the constellations.  Maybe you have come to a NENAC (Northeast Nebraska Astronomy Club) meeting or two and have learned more about some of what you see in the night sky.  So, what could help you take your interest in astronomy to the next level?

All are invited to this Friday, July 25 at 9pm at the Lyons Library and Saturday, July 26 at 9pm at the Decatur Sears Center to this month’s NENAC.  There Pastor GaryFugman will lead a discussion on the opportunity for you to participate in observing programs for children, new observers and experienced telescope owners alike.  Wow, all this in one evening!  The Astronomical League, a national organization, has an observing activity for everyone interested in astronomy.  Options for joining the Astronomical League will be investigated at NENAC this weekend.  This month’s night sky will also be discussed complete with free star charts.
Then, weather permitting, at 10pm Friday we will travel 3 miles south of Lyons to the Cory and Tracie Martin residence to observe Saturn and deep sky objects through Cory’s powerful telescope.  Saturday, we will travel to the south side of Decatur to observe through Pastor Gary’s powerful telescope.  You are encouraged to bring your binoculars or telescope as well.

Aid Available for Storm Damaged Crops

Funding is available thru the NRCS to producers who experienced crop damage due to severe weather during the 2014 growing season. Interested applicants have until Aug. 15, 2014, to apply.

The Storm Damage Cover Crop Initiative will assist producers with planting cover crops to re-establish vegetative cover lost due to extreme weather conditions such as drought, floods, tornado, hail and high winds.

Nebraska State Conservationist Craig Derickson said, “Nebraska’s producers know that weather in the Great Plains can be extreme, but this year has been especially devastating. In some areas, crops have been totally destroyed, leaving bare ground exposed.”

Cover crops can be an important tool in recovering from severe weather events like Nebraska has been experiencing. When a cover crop of grasses, legumes or small grains is planted, the soil is covered and protected from further damage from wind, water and heat.

Establishing a cover crop now can help protect and prepare the soil for the next growing season.

Bancroft Farmers Market

The Bancroft farmers market is held each week on Friday mornings from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. located by the community board. All vendors are welcome to sell baked goods, jellies, farm fresh eggs, honey, garden produce etc. No charge to participate in the farmers market. For more information contact Connie at 402-648-3387. * The senior center provides Information and Assistance to any individual who is looking for services for themselves or another person 60 years and older, the center manager and/or center participant can provide information to individuals on services available within the community. We link individuals to the services and opportunities that are available within or beyond the community itself. We will then establish adequate follow-up procedures to see that their needs were met. Meals on Wheels

Would you like to get Meals on Wheels? Anyone over the age of 60 years and lives within the city limits are eligible for these meals. You may sign up anytime for the Meals on Wheels program; you can get the meals delivered however many times you want them each week. You must call 402-687-2332 before 8:30 a.m. if you want a meal that day. The suggested donation for the meals is $4.00.

Weekly Activities:

Wed. July 23: Melody chimers practice at 9:00. There will be a pitch tournament at 1:30.

Thurs. July24: Tai Chi class at 9:30 and the walking ex. class at 10:30. Stop in for coffee at 10:00. Come and play bingo at 2:00.

Fri. July 25: Join us for chair exercises at 10:00. Sign up to play hand and foot or for the pinochle tournament at 1:30. The farmers market has started; it is located by the bulletin board, selling from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m.

Mon. July 28: Sign up for the pitch tournament at 1:15. Monthly board meeting is at 3:30.

Tues. July 29: Tai Chi class at 9:30 and the walking ex. class at 10:30. Stop in for coffee at 10:00. The 5-handed pinochle tournament will start at 1:30
