Layne H. Meyer, 66 of Hooper NE


Layne H. Meyer, age 66, of Hooper, Nebraska passed away August 4th, 2014, at the A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont, Nebraska. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 8, 2014 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hooper, NE. The Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Burial at the Hooper Cemetery in Hooper, Nebraska. Visitation on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5 to 6 p.m. all at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation on Friday at church one hour prior to service. Memorials may be given to Brain Injury Association of Nebraska, to Redeemer Lutheran Church and to the Winslow Volunteer Fire Department. Layne was born to Harvey and Helene (Heller) Meyer on August 16th, 1947 in West Point, Nebraska. He was baptized on October 6th, 1947 and confirmed on March 26th, 1961 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in rural Hooper, NE.

The youngest child, he grew up on the family farm with his sister and two brothers. He received his elementary education at District #35 and Hooper Elementary School. He graduated from Hooper High School in 1965. He continued his education in mechanics at North Central Kansas Vocational Technical School in Beloit, Kansas. He was employed by Marvin Beitzel in Herndon, Virginia for two years. When he returned to Nebraska, he began farming the Heller farm north of Winslow which was homesteaded by his great great grandfather, August Heller in 1871. Layne felt honored to be the fourth generation to farm this land. He also worked at Wimmers in West Point for several years.

He married Mae Rita Harms on May 30th, 1981 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dodge, NE. and they have two children, a son, Anthony Layne and a daughter, Jennifer Rose.

Layne is a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church of Hooper, NE. He was a member of the Winslow Volunteer Fire Department and the Hooper Township Board, serving as Treasurer for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Mae; son, Tony Meyer of Hooper; daughter, Jennifer and son-in-law, Matthew Nicholas of Exeter, NE.; brother, Lowell Meyer and special friend, Joyce Nelson both of Uehling, NE., sister and brother in-in-law, Lowene and Homer Uehling of Oakland, NE., mother-in-law, Hilda Harms of West Point; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Kathy and Leonard Simanek of Malmo, NE., Betty Steffensmeier of Dodge, NE., Donna and John Gall of Norfolk NE., and Marge and Glenn Steffensmeier of Bennett, NE; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John Harms, Leonard and Theresa Harms, Raymond & Lynn Harms, and Marvin and Deanne Harms all of Dodge, NE., along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents Harvey and Helene Meyer and a brother, Larry Meyer, his paternal grandparents, Julius & Grace (Haye) Heller, his paternal grandparents, Bernhard & Anna (Havekost) Meyer, father-in-law, George Harms, and two brother-in-laws, Anthony Harms and Tony Harms.
