Household Hazardous Waste Collections

Many people are uncertain of how to dispose of paint, chemicals, oil, antifreeze, car batteries, pesticides, herbicides, fluorescent light bulbs, solvents, varnish and other chemicals which are not accepted by local landfills. The Nebraska Loess Hills Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Council is sponsoring three household hazardous waste collections for these types of materials. These collections provide the opportunity to recycle some of this waste, and ensure special handling of any material which is potentially hazardous. Northeast Nebraska households can take their waste to any of the following FREE collection events:

September 26, 2014, 3-6:00 p.m. at the old CVA site in Emerson, NE. From Hwy 9, turn West on Center;

September 27, 2014, 9-11:30 a.m. at the alley parking lot behind the Elementary School in Beemer, NE. From Blaine Street, turn East off 3rd Street,

North on Harrison Street; enter alley off Harrison, between 3rd and 4th Streets, going West;

September 27, 2014, 1:00-3:30 p.m. at the parking area west of the Main Street Businesses in Craig, NE. From Highway 32, turn South onto State Highway 11A Spur; continue onto Main Street; turn West on Morford Avenue to collection site;

The collection will accept most household quantities of chemicals. The collection will NOT ACCEPT tires, electronic equipment, appliances, PCBs, picric acid, radioactive materials, biological hazards or science lab materials. Collections are open to all households (no businesses!), and participants do not have to live in the town hosting the event. Onsite personnel are required to accept and sort hazardous waste as it is received, so items must not be dropped off prior to the scheduled event times.

These collections are a joint effort by The Nebraska Loess Hills RC&D Council, communities of Emerson, Beemer, and Craig, NRDs, and Keep Northeast Nebraska Beautiful. This event is funded through a grant from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality.

Knights Down Tigers in a Thriller

The Oakland-Craig Knights took on long-time rival Tekamah-Herman Tigers at home last Friday night.

The game was a thriller, but the Knights prevailed, downing the Tigers soundly 36-12.

“Our number one goal was that we wanted to get out to a fast start and get a lead early in the game.  I thought we did a good job of accomplishing that,” stated head coach Joe Anderson.

Nick Arlt had 376 yards rushing in the game on 79 carries. Others exploded, creating some excitement of their own.

“Our line came out and really created a good push and Nick was doing a great job of finding the cut back lane and created some big plays. One of the biggest plays of the game was Mace’s TD pass to Bryce. Both guys made great plays and that really opened things up for us,” Anderson said. “I wished we would have played with that same intensity in the 4th quarter, as I thought we did not finish the game as strong a I would have liked.”

The defense responded well too with Nick Arlt leading the way in tackles, having 17, followed by Tyler Groth, Bryce Uhing and Tommy Nelson with six each.

“I thought our defense played really well most of the game. Tekamah relies heavily on the big play, and we did a good job of shutting that part of their game down for 3 quarters,” Anderson stated. “Our kids did a good job of recognizing where their playmakers were at, and we were assignment sound most of the night.”

The Knights moved up four places in class C2 to seventh. They take on Crofton this Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in Oakland.

Cougars Give it Their all Against Tigers

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

A never say die bunch of Cougars gave it their all as they tried to erase a thirty-eight point deficit in the second half of their contest against Osmond.  After a dismal first half put LDNE down 36-6, two third quarter  scores by the Tigers put them up by 50-12.  The Cougars rallied for five touch downs before falling by a score of 62-46.

Lady Cougars Have Busy Week

It was a busy week for Cougar volleyball with 6 matches during the week.  The Cougars won two matches and lost four.  Their season record stands at 2-5.

On Tuesday, Northeast hosted Clarkson-Leigh in an East husker Conference match. It was a Black Out Night as the Cougar faithful were clad in black as they cheered on their team.

The team came out full of energy and jumped to a 5-0 lead.  Darcey Simonsen served up two aces and Kelly Wakeley added a kill.  After a side out Kelly Wakeley served four more points to boost the lead to 10-2.

The team rode their emotional opening to a 17-8 lead as Brianne Haskell tallied 2 kills and an ace and Madie Ronnfeldt and Mickayla Petersen scored kills.  Momentum made quick switch with the Patriot scoring seven of the next eight points and closing to within 19-15.

The team regrouped and closed out the win.  Mickayla Petersen came up big during Darcey Simonsen’s turn to serve.  The junior front liner had a key kill and block as Northeast added five points  After a side out Kelly Wakeley served up the winning point with the help of a kill by Tessie Collins.

The second game hard a slower start for the Cougars.  The score stood at five points apiece before the Cougars ran off four straight points. Brianne Haskell got aside out point with a kill and then served up three points with the help of kills by Madie Ronnfeldt and Kelly Wakeley.

After both teams sided out, The Cougars got on a roll and jumped out to a 17-8 lead.  Mickayla Petersen had two kills during the rally.  The Patriots were not going to go down easy and scored the next five points.  Northeast got some breathing room as Tessie Collins had two aces to get LDNE to 21 points.

The teams each sided out on the next four serves.  Tessie Collins’s kill gave Northeast their 25th point for a 25-17 win.

Clarkson/Leigh got a fast start in game three.  They ran off five straight for a 5-2 lead.  By mid-set they had a 17-10 lead.  The Cougars started a rally by out scoring the Patriots 6 to 2.   Two service errors by C/L teamed with a block by Brianne Haskell, a kill by Darcey Simonsen, and an ace by Mickayla Petersen were keys in turning the tide as Northeast pulled to within three points, 19-16.

Clarkson/Leigh maintained their three point advantage and reached game point with a 24-21 lead.  A side out made it 24-22.  Brianne Haskell got a kill and the Patriots hit into the net tying  the score at 24.  The score remained tied with each team slamming a kill, Mickayla Peterson’s gave Northeast a game point situation, but C/L tied it at 25.  A block on Clarkson’s serve set the winning points. Madie Ronnfeldt faked a set and stroked a kill for the match winner.

“I told the team that I am only in my twenties, but I getting gray hairs with games like that,” joked Coach Hathaway.  She said, I was really happy with their play.  They really hustled and a great start to the match.”

Join Your Neighbors for a Main Street Coffee Hour

Come take part in a public social event where you can sit a spell and chat about your town from the comfort of a living room!

The Main Street Coffee Hour is a re-creation of a living room on main street. All community members are invited to sit, enjoy a hot beverage, and share their thoughts about community. Everyone is welcome to bring an item or prop from home to add to the “scene”, such as: a lamp, houseplant, TV tray, vacuum, etc. As part of Center for Rural Affairs’ Byway of Art project, Decatur, Lyons, Macy and Oakland are fortunate to welcome artist Matthew Mazzotta to their Main Street Coffee Hour. Mazzotta will sit, chat, and listen to our ideas and visions for our towns.

This is the first of several opportunities that the yearlong community based art project will provide for folks to get involved. Refreshments will be on from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. Take a break during the day and join the discussion! Inclement weather locations have been arranged.
