Pat was born to Alfred D. Raun and Marie (Philpot) Raun on November 29th, 1925. She spent the early years of her life in Walthill, where she was active in Girl Scouts, Job’s Daughters, and Girls State, graduating from Walthill High School in 1943 as Valedictorian. She attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln where she was in the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, graduating in 1947 with a degree in Fine Arts. She worked as a commercial artist for the Miller and Paine department store for five years, during which time she married Ronald Kent Samuelson, who was then attending the University of Nebraska Law School. In 1952, the couple moved to Walthill, where Ron went into law practice with his father-in-law, Alfred Dreyfus Raun, and later moved to Pender in 1955, where she remained until her death.

Pat and Ron raised two sons, Drey and Matt, who couldn’t have been more loved. She started teaching art out of her home in 1971, and touched the lives of many area children and adults. She was a very warm, caring, empathic person, someone who would do anything for anyone she saw in need. She loved traveling with Ron, art, Cornhusker football, game shows, crossword puzzles, and gardening.

She is survived by her son, Matt, who lives in Pender; her son and daughter-in-law, Drey and Lisa, who live in Washington, D.C.; her step-grandchildren, Sarah, of Philadelphia, and Nick, of New York City; her sister, Luanne Smith, and brother-in-law, Ronald, of Denver; her nieces Shelley Smith of San Pedro, California, and Zoanne, of Denver; and her nephew, Bob Samuelson, of Bella Vista, Arkansas.

Community Help Needed for Logan Valley Manor Staff

Since the announcement of the impending closing of the Logan Valley Manor on April 27 the staff have not been paid. At the time of their next regular pay-day, a couple of days later, they did not receive their expected paychecks. In fact, the last paychecks the staff received were half a month prior to that. Their pay schedule also means that the staff have been working for over a month without getting paid for any of those hours of labor. We are attempting to offer some help to these families that have been depending on these paychecks.

“If you would like to give any food items or monetary donations toward this effort, please drop your donations off at the New Life Church. It will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily and is located immediately west of the Logan Valley Manor,” stated Jeff Clark, Pastor of New Life Church.

For those who are not be familiar with its location, from Diamond Street turn south on Ninth Street and you will find yourself in the New Life parking lot. Thank you in advance for your generous gifts for these families

Center for Rural Affairs Sponsors Good Living Tour

Hear Nebraska announced that the Center for Rural Affairs will participate in the inaugural Good Living Tour project as a sponsoring partner. The Good Living Tour is an oral history project and free, all-ages concert series hosted in nine communities across Greater Nebraska, July 17-25.

“We are extremely proud and excited to welcome the Center as an official sponsor of the 2015 Good Living Tour,” said Hear Nebraska Executive Director Andrew Norman. “The Center’s mission to establish strong rural communities in Nebraska by empowering citizens aligns perfectly with this project’s goal to help these communities attract and retain young people. It couldn’t be a better fit.”

Tyler Vacha, Director of Development, Engagement, and Operations at the Center for Rural Affairs, states, “It’s great to see new and exciting projects like this come to Rural Nebraska. Hear Nebraska should be commended for taking steps to ensure rural Nebraskans get to experience and support our homegrown musicians. We’re proud to be a partner in making the 2015 Good Living Tour a reality.”
In addition to nine free concerts — each featuring three contemporary, original, Nebraska-based bands of varying genres — the 2015 Good Living Tour includes Hear Nebraska’s production of more than 27 music/arts-related feature stories and videos. This multimedia content aims to highlight some of the artistic and cultural elements that make the host communities great to live, work and play, especially for young people.

The 2015 Good Living Tour takes place in the following towns: Imperial, Ogallala, Scottsbluff/Gering, Valentine, North Platte, Kearney, West Point, Nebraska City and Grand Island.

Center for Rural Affairs joins Humanities Nebraska and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment as fiscal sponsors of the project.
