Lloyd A. Wilkinson, age 83, of Fremont, Nebraska passed away Monday November 16, 2015 at Nye Point Health and Rehab in Fremont. Funeral services will be Friday, 10:30 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Jon Ashley will officiate. Burial will follow in Memorial Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation will be Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel in Fremont. Lloyd was born October 12, 1932 in Fremont to Clyde and Mabel ‘Menking’ Wilkinson. He was raised in Arlington, moved to Fremont when he was 10 years old and graduated from Fremont High School in 1950. He served in the National Guard from 1949 until 1962. After high school he went to work for Carlstrom Brothers Construction in Fremont. He worked for them for 32 years then worked for several other contractors and himself before retiring. Lloyd was a great athlete. He loved hockey and had his own children on skates at a very young age. He also loved Cowboy Movies especially John Wayne and country singers Gene Autry and Eddy Arnold.
Lloyd had been a member of the Izaak Walton League and Fraternal Order of the Eagles Arie #200. He had been involved with the Mariners Club at The Presbyterian Church in Fremont.
Lloyd married Jerry Cozad on October 18, 1953 in Red Oak, IA. She preceded him in death on July 12, 2014.

Margaret Conklin, 74, of Tekamah NE

Margaret Lillian Conklin, age 74, passed away November 14, 2015 at the Golden Living Center in Tekamah following a brief illness.
Margaret was born July 11, 1941 to William and Tillie (Abendroth) Moseman. She was raised on a small farm in Rosalie Nebraska. She graduated from Rosalie High School in 1959.
On May 6, 1960 she was united in marriage to Frank Conklin Jr in Tekamah. They made their home in Tekamah where they raised 3 children: Anna, Robert, and Tania. Throughout her life she worked many different jobs that included driving a school bus for Tekamah-Herman schools for many years. She had a huge love for animals. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, knitting, and many other crafts.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Frank, and daughter Anna.
Survivors include her son, Robert Conklin of Omaha NE; daughter, Tania (Richard) Ullarich; granddaughters Jasmine and Courtney Ullarich all of Norfolk NE; son-in-law, Roger Muhs of Craig, NE; step daughter, Debra Mitchell of Georgia and her children.

This month I would like to highlight and recognize some very special people and schools. Recently, two schools in Northeast Nebraska were recognized by the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program. Bancroft-Rosalie Elementary School in Bancroft and Washington Elementary School in Norfolk were recognized for their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps. In addition, Dr. Jon Cerny, principal at Bancroft-Rosalie Elementary School, was named one of seven principals from the 2015 National Blue Ribbon Schools to receive the Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding School Leadership.
A highlight of serving on the Nebraska State Board of Education is participating in the celebration of outstanding teachers. On November 5th, the Nebraska State Board of Education recognized the 2016 Teacher of the Year, the recipients of the Excellence in Teaching Awards as well as the Milken Educator Award winner. The Nebraska Teacher of the Year program has been in place since 1972. The Teacher of the Year is Tim Royers from Millard West High School. The Excellence in Teaching Award winners are: Lori Boudreau of Papillion La Vista High School; Lynn Hill of Millard South High School; Daniel Schaben of Arapahoe Public School; and Jayson Stoddard of Hastings Middle School. The commonality of all of these exceptional teachers includes a passion for teaching their students and an ability to inspire and motivate every student every day!
The Milken Educator Awards were launched by the Milken Family Foundation in 1987. The Milken Educator Award recipients are early to mid-career teachers selected for what they have achieved and for their promise and commitment to the profession of teaching. The Milken Educator Award recipient is Courtney Matulka from the Millard Public Schools, Beadle Middle School.
Following the November luncheon celebration, the State Board of Education was honored by remarks from the 2016 Teacher of the Year Tim Royers who provided insightful comments regarding his love for teaching and learning. Also presenting was the 2015 Teacher of the Year, Shelby Aaberg from Scottsbluff High School, who provided an overview of his experiences traveling Nebraska and the country as Nebraska’s Teacher of the Year.
Congratulations to these outstanding schools and amazing educators who are the everyday champions of children and education.
A year ago, I provided information about the Nebraska Department of Education’s plan to submit a “waiver” or flexibility request under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 to the United States Department of Education. Recently, NDE received information regarding changes that would need to be made to the plan before any approval could occur. At the same time, it appears there may be some movement by Congress to get their work done and to reauthorize the Act! So, we are in a “wait and see” mode. If reauthorization occurs, there will not be a need for the waiver.

Flags to be Flown at Half-Staff in Honor of Victims of Paris Attacks

Today, Governor Pete Ricketts, in accordance with a proclamation from President Barack Obama, announced that all U.S. and Nebraska flags are to be flown at half-staff in honor of the victims of the terrorist attacks in Paris, France.
Flags will be flown at half-staff until sunset on November 19, 2015.
Dianne Burt, 66, of Oakland NE

Dianne “Beulah” Burt was born January 14, 1949, in Oakland, Nebraska, to Raymond and Bernice (Nelson) Ahl . She passed away Friday, November 13, 2015, at her home in Oakland, at the age of 66 years.
Dianne graduated from Craig High School, Craig, Nebraska, in 1967.
On August 20, 1977, Dianne and Earl Burt were married at Tekamah, Nebraska. They made their home in Oakland.
Dianne was employed as a waitress for many years at the Corner Café in Oakland, where she receivedthe name “Beulah” as many of you know. After the Corner Cafe closed, she helped out at B & B’s and Quenchers. She also spent a few years working at Nifty Thrifty in Oakland.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl; two brothers, Steve and Wayne Ahl; sister, Nancy Ahl.
Survivors include her daughter, Tammy Jernigan of Fremont, NE; stepdaughters, Nicki Burt and Wendi Burt; stepson, Shane Burt; brother, William Ahl of Fremont; stepfather, Loren Hood of Tekamah, NE; stepsister, Lornella Cooper of Texas; sister-in-law, Sally Ahl of Omaha, NE; three grandchildren: Kelsey, Trent and Serenity Jernigan; one great grandchild, Zayble; many nieces and nephews.

Fischer Statement on Paris Attacks

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and chairman of the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities, released the following statement regarding last night’s terrorist attacks in Paris, France:
“Last night, the world witnessed unimaginable terror and the very real threat Islamic terrorism poses to free and open societies. I join all Nebraskans in our deep sorrow and solidarity with the people of France as they grieve and persevere through this tragedy.
“As these events in Paris have united the world in grief, so too must the world unite with resolve. Those responsible for planning and coordinating this horrific assault on innocent civilians must be held to account. The messages of hate and radicalism that underpin these attacks demands a global response.
“In the days and weeks ahead, I hope the people of France will take comfort in the prayers and aid of the American people. We are in this together.”
