Eva Weeks, 93, of Lyons NE

Eva Weeks, age 93, of rural Lyons, Nebraska passed away on January 13, 2017 at her home in rural Lyons.  Funeral Mass will be on  Wednesday, January 18, 2017, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lyons, Nebraska.  Burial will be in the Lyons Cemetery, Lyons.  Visitation will be held Tuesday, from 5-7 p.m. with family receiving friends and a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. all at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour prior to service.  Memorials too the family for later designation.  Pelan Funeral Services in Lyons in charge of arrangements

Eva Weeks was born January 25, 1923 to Lee “Doc” and Pina (Barada) Beck at their home east of Rosalie, Nebraska. She grew up with two sisters, Melva and Mary Lee, and one brother, Tom Beck.

Eva was devoted to church and all activities associated with doing God’s work. She was married to Garth Redding at a younger age. This union was blessed with five children: Bob, Tom, John, Mary and Joe Redding. Eva was a totally devoted stay at home mother, raising their five children and providing whatever assistance she could to her husband and his farming career. Life can be hard at times, which unfortunately Eva had to experience, losing Garth at a very young age. Eva spent several years as a single mother, with the job of keeping the farm going for her and her family’s source of income. Those years were very hard for Eva.

After several years alone, Eva met and married Art Uhing. This was a huge blessing for both of them, as they had been in similar circumstances. Unfortunately, after several good years together, God called Art home, leaving Eva single again. She knew from what she had experienced in the past that she did not want to be that single mother again; God in his mercy for her brought her to Anton Oligmueller, a very wonderful man devoted to God and family. They were happy together for quite a period of time, but Anton had used his allotted days on earth, and was called home as well. His absence paired Eva with someone else who needed her companionship, Harold Weeks. Eva and Harold spent many joyous years together. Eva remained devoted to raising her children; she was also successfully involved with many step children and step grandchildren, sharing in their lives.

During Eva’s entire life she possessed and utilized the talent of her hands. She knitted, crocheted and tatted. She always made the most beautiful, perfect projects, giving most away to family and friends. Every one of her many grandchildren and great grandchildren received a perfectly knitted baby blanket and booties. Throughout Eva’s years, she loved camping, boating and travelling to many places. She was involved with clubs and her church her entire life. During her later years, Eva was very hard to keep home; she was definitely a get-up-and-go type of person. She loved people and people loved her. She was a very good and willing player of most any table game; you had to watch out because she wasn’t going to let you win, if she had anything to say about it.

Even with her trials, Eva enjoyed life to the fullest. God was with Eva, giving her the strength it took for her to be able to stay in her home independently, with her dog Sally, until it was time for her to go with him. She will be greatly missed by so very many family and friends that she has had a huge impact on.

Eva is survived by her children, most grandchildren and most great grandchildren; there are a few ahead of her that she will be so happy to see, letting them know for us that they are missed here on earth, and many are looking forward to their reunion someday.

WE ALL LOVE AND MISS YOU MOM!!

A New Legislative Session Begins

By Senator Lydia Brasch

Our first day back to the work of serving our districts and our Great State of Nebraska in the

Legislature has arrived. This begins the first session of a two-year biennium. If you did not

attend, watch online or on NET2, each day of session is recorded into a daily “Legislative

Journal,” which read: “Pursuant to the provisions of Article III, Section 10 of the Constitution of

Nebraska, the One Hundred Fifth Legislature, First Session of the Legislature of Nebraska,

assembled in the George W. Norris Legislative Chamber of the State Capitol at the hour of 10:00

a.m., on Wednesday, January 4, 2017, and was called to order by President Foley.”

Due to term limits, this is my final two years as your state senator. We opened the session with

prayer offered by Senator Kolterman, followed by the Presentation of Colors and a Call to Order;

there was a Quorum (majority of the body) present. The task was to call for an appointment of

Temporary Officers (Clerk, Sgt. at Arms). The motion prevailed.

It was my honor to move the motion that “we proceed to the election of five persons to serve as

the Committee on Credentials.” They report to the Legislature on the “credentials of those

claiming to be elected to the Legislature in the General Election in November 2016.” John Gale,

Secretary of State, ceremoniously carries in a box of certified election results and verifies that

“the attached is a true and correct copy of the Official Roster of members of the Nebraska

Unicameral Legislature elected or appointed to serve in the One Hundred Fifth Legislature, First

Session, 2017.”

The election of a new speaker took place; Senator Jim Scheer of Norfolk prevailed. When

elections for committee chairs commenced, I was chosen to be the chairperson of the Agriculture

Committee. It was a truly joyful, yet humble day to see the balcony and seats filled with many

new faces. The press covered a few contentious moments on the floor as some, myself included,

spoke freely about the need for transparency in voting with regard to electing our chairpersons.

Many senators invoked arguments regarding the true nature of the Unicameral being, or no

longer being, a nonpartisan institution. I found it surprising when those opposed to this

transparency spoke of George Norris rolling over in his grave about this controversy, when in

fact secret voting for chairmanships by the body of the Legislature began as recently as the

1970’s, several decades after Norris’s death.  Certainly the life and principles of George Norris

will be closely examined by many in the days that follow.

On Thursday and Friday we witnessed the swearing in ceremonies for the Chief Justice and new

members of the Nebraska Supreme Court, Public Service Commission, State Board of Education

Members and the Board of Regents; all of them take the same oath of office as every senator. We

also began submitting new legislation to be entered into the record. Next week’s column will

include bills I introduced.

location, 2 doors south of  pervious office) if you are in the State Capitol. If you would like to
