Gerald Wortman, 93, of Tekamah, NE


Gerald Duane Wortman was born August 9, 1924 to Albert and Margaret (Young) Wortman in Tekamah, Nebraska. He passed away December 26, 2017 at Tekamah Care and Rehabilitation Center in Tekamah, at the age of 93 years.

Gerald and his family moved to the Macy, Nebraska area in 1936. He graduated from Macy High School in 1943. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1944, and served with the 6th Marine Division in Guam, Guadalcanal, Okinawa and China. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

He married JoAnne Hanneman on September 10, 1947. To this union were born three children: Terry, Jaccie and Brian.

Gerald worked for TekSeed, Leo Tobin, Harry Fankhouser and Clyde Stork. He also worked on the home farm near Walthill, Nebraska. He went on to work for his brother-in-law, Elwin Robinson, as a truck driver and shelled corn. In 1965, he bought the Standard Station in Tekamah and ran it until 1983. He became a mechanic at Tekamah Motors, working until his retirement in 1991.

Gerald was a member of the American Legion Post No. 15 and VFW Bataan Post No. 3304.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Delmar, Lawrence, Vernon and Don; grandson, Derek Wortman; granddaughter, Juliet Wortman.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnne; children, Terry (LuAnn) Wortman, Jaccie (Steve) Mencke, Brian (Mary) Wortman; grandchildren, Amie (Jeff) Ohlmann, Taressa (Shawn) Poppert, Collin Wortman, Brent Mencke, Craig (Crystal) Mencke, Mark Wortman, Jennifer (Stephen) Mills; 11 great grandchildren.

Richard “Richie” Mossberger, 36, of Tekamah NE


Richard “Richie” Allen Mossberger was born April 2, 1981 to Robin Mossberger. He passed away December 22, 2017, in Tekamah, Nebraska, at the age of 36 years.

Richie attended Tekamah-Herman School. He was a hard worker and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, bonfires, playing pool and most importantly spending time with his family, his dogs and friends. He was loved by everyone.

He was preceded in death by his grandma, Betty Grady; grandpa, Richard Mossberger; great aunts andgreat uncles.

Survivors include his mother, Robin R Mossberger; brother, Justin (Amanda) Mossberger; sister, Renae Mossberger; niece, Joslyn; nephews, Austin, Lucas and Jayden; Fiancé, Nikki Lorenzen; step-children, Kaylee, Kaleb and Kaden, all of Tekamah; many more family members and friends.

Joshua Charles Mulder, 20, of Oakland NE


Joshua Charles Mulder, age 20, of Oakland, Nebraska passed away Thursday, December 21, 2017 near Cozad, Nebraska.  Funeral services will be on Wednesday, December 27, 2017, 11 a.m. at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland, NE.  Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Tuesday, from 4-7 p.m. with family receiving friends at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland.  There will be a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held Wednesday morning, one hour prior to service at the church.  Memorials to the family for later designation.  Arrangements by Pelan Funeral Services in Oakland.

Joshua Charles Mulder was born to Richard and Susan (Neitzke) Mulder on September 15, 1997 in Fremont, Nebraska. Josh was baptized and confirmed in Christ at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland, Nebraska. He was a proud 2106 graduate of Oakland-Craig High School. Josh was currently a student at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, working toward a psychology degree.

Josh had a strong faith and a huge heart. He loved his family and friends. As a child he was active in cub scouts, baseball and hanging out at the pool. He loved the water and being outdoors. He enjoyed spending time at Chief Lake in Michigan and Lake Cochrane, South Dakota while visiting his Grandparents.

When he was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 12, a great friendship developed between Josh and an awesome group of boys. His happiest times were with “the squad”. Over the years they kept busy playing disc golf, “dinger” baseball, paintball, kayaking, watching WWE, trips to Lake Cochrane in the summer, ski trips to Colorado in the winter and just hanging out in Josh’s room.

In high school, Josh was a dedicated cross country runner and enjoyed being a member of the basketball and track teams. Even though golf wasn’t his sport, Josh achieved a feat few have accomplished, he got a hole in one on the 6th hole at the Oakland Golf Club. In college he participated in intramural sports, he was excited his football team won their division this year. Josh had his challenges in life, but he was a very determined young man and did not let anything stop him from what he wanted to achieve.

Josh is survived by his parents; brother, Jared; sister, Marissa; grandparents, Dr. Richard and Ruth Mulder of Ivanhoe, MN, Charles and Celia Neitzke of Kaleva, MI; aunts and uncles, Angie (Todd) Board of NC, Stefini (Matt) Thomsen of MN, Curtis Mulder of MN, Jane Neitzke of MI; cousins, Rachel and Rory Board, Addie and Jack Thomsen.

Harold Lee “Swede” Hawkins, 85, of Oakland NE


Harold Lee “Swede” Hawkins, age 85, of Oakland, Nebraska passed away December 11, 2017, at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. Memorial services will be on Saturday, December 16, 2017, 1 p.m. at the Oakland-Craig Elementary School Gymnasium with Military Honors to be be conducted following the service. Burial will be held in the Oakland Cemetery, Oakland, Nebraska at a later date. Memorial visitation will be held Friday from 5-7 p.m. with family receiving friends, at First United Methodist Church in Oakland. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation. Harold Lee “Swede” Hawkins was born to Harold and Ileta (Kate DeVasure) Hawkins September 19, 1932, on a rural farm outside of Tekamah, Nebraska. Attending grade school in Decatur, he moved to Tekamah in the seventh grade where he remained through his high school graduation. He then attended Doane College, where he played football. In January 1951, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. He was deployed to Pusan, Korea as a soldier in the Korean War. On June 14, 1952 he sustained injuries from a grenade blast that resulted in his discharge in January 1954.

Upon returning to the United States, he enrolled at Midland College, met MaryAnn Wesely, later playing football in the fall. They married June 4, 1955. After marriage and graduation, he taught school for 37 years (8 years at Creighton and 29 years at Oakland/Oakland-Craig), retiring in 1994.

Over the years, he was a teacher, coach, athletic director and principal. Swede was probably most proud of his successful career as a golf coach, which will culminate in his induction into the NHSACA Hall of Fame in June 2018.

Swede and MaryAnn enjoyed their later years exploring the 50 states, visiting National Parks, the Czech Republic and enjoying their ever-growing family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Betty, Gerald, Tom, Jean and Patty.

He is survived by his wife, MaryAnn; five children: Kirk (Gail) Hawkins, Carol (Dave) Krick, Robin Hawkins, Lee Anne (Brad) Simpson and Spencer (Laura) Hawkins all of Omaha; three sisters, Ila (Gary) Davis of Springfield, Harriet (Pat) Schafer of Tekamah and Peg (Randy) Doncheski of Lincoln; 13 grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
