FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

4975 trees were planted in Burt County in spring of 2013 through the Natural Resources District (NRD) Conservation Tree Program.  These trees will provide food and cover for wildlife, reduce soil erosion, protect crops and livestock, provide shade and shelter for homes, buffer noise, and add beauty to our landscape.   The Conservation Tree Program in Burt County is a joint effort of the Papio Missouri River NRD and the Lower Elkhorn NRD.

The Conservation Tree Program is now accepting Burt County orders for Spring, 2014.  A wide variety of seedlings and planting services are available at very reasonable prices.  NRD cost share and other incentives may be available for Burt County tree and shrub planting projects. Seedling prices increase after January 1, 2014 and there may be a shortage of some species, so place orders early for best selection and prices.

The 2013- 2014 Conservation Tree Program also offers a new Small Acreage Package.  The  package includes 10 Ponderosa Pine, 10 Colorado Blue Spruce, 10 Swamp White Oak, 10 Lilac and 10 Skunkbush Sumac.  The small acreage package is ideal for landowners who want to plant a variety of trees and shrubs, but don’t want to purchase a full bundle of 25 of each of species.

For more information or to place an order contact Deb Ward, PMRNRD Program Assistant    (402)374-1920 ext. 101 or Deborah.ward2@ne.nacdnet.net or visit the NRD office in the USDA Service Center, 539 S. 13th Street in Tekamah.

Housing Surveys Coming to Burt County Residents

By Patty Plugge-BCEDC

If you would like to give your opinion on what type of housing is most needed in Burt County AND have a chance to win some cash right before the holiday season, you are in luck!  Information is currently being gathered to update the Burt County Housing Market Study.  The study is being conducted by Hanna: Keelan Associates, a community development consultant group hired by Burt County Economic Development Corporation.

Lyons and Decatur residents will be receiving their surveys with their utility bills.  All other county residents will be receiving their surveys directly through the mail.  The surveys can then be returned by mail to the BCEDC office, or they can be dropped off at the City/Village office.  Residents who fill out and return the survey will be entered into cash drawing of $50 in each of the communities and the rural area.

When the study is completed, it will give the county a five-year action plan to address housing needs at all levels.  It will also match county housing needs with funding sources.  A Housing Fair will be conducted for potential developers to be introduced to the housing opportunities in Burt County.

“Updated information and statistics that the housing study provides is necessary to have in order to apply for any housing grants,” said Patty Plugge, BCEDC Director. “The information is also extremely useful when applying for other types of grants and we will share this information with all of the city and county governments.”

The study is being funded by grants from Nebraska Investment Finance Authority, Tekamah Community Foundation, Black Hills Energy, Lyons Community Club and Burt County Economic Development Corporation.
