Defective Airbag Recall Notice

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration urges owners of certain Toyota, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Chrysler, Ford and General Motors vehicles to act immediately on recall notices to replace defective Takata airbags. Over seven million vehicles are involved in these recalls, which have occurred as far back as 18 months ago and as recently as Monday. The message comes with urgency, especially for owners of vehicles affected by regional recalls in the following areas: Florida, Puerto Rico, limited areas near the Gulf of Mexico in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Louisiana, as well as Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Virgin Islands and Hawaii.

“Responding to these recalls, whether old or new, is essential to personal safety and it will help aid our ongoing investigation into Takata airbags and what appears to be a problem related to extended exposure to consistently high humidity and temperatures. However, we’re leaving no stone unturned in our aggressive pursuit to track down the full geographic scope of this issue,” said NHTSA Deputy Administrator David Friedman.

Consumers that are uncertain whether their vehicle is impacted by the Takata recalls, or any other recall, can contact their manufacturer’s website to search, by their vehicle identification number (VIN) to confirm whether their individual vehicle has an open recall that needs to be addressed. Owners that have been contacted by their manufacturer should contact their dealer’s service department and make arrangements for the repair. In addition, consumers can sign up for NHTSA recall alerts, which go out before recall letters are mailed by the manufacturers to the affected owners.

7.8 Million Affected U.S. Vehicles, by Manufacturer, Impacted by CY 2013 and 2014 Recalls Involving Takata Airbags

Note: The list below corrects the list that accompanied our October 20 advisory, which incorrectly included certain vehicles. The numbers cited for potentially affected vehicles below are subject to change and adjustment because there may be cases of vehicles being counted more than once. Owners should check their VIN periodically as manufacturers continue to add VINs to the database. Once owner recall notices are available, owners can retrieve a copy from SaferCar.gov, or will receive one by U.S. mail and are advised to carefully follow the enclosed instructions.

Groovy’s Pub, Dream of Small Town Tavern Becomes Reality

“I have always wanted to have a small town tavern,” stated Tami Grover, owner of Groovy’s Pub in Oakland. “We are a pub and grill, selling food and drinks.”

Groovy’s opened their doors June 1st, having purchased the business from Brian and Patty Johnson and Randy Johnson (then called Trophies). Starting a new business has its ups and downs. “It takes a lot to get a business going and we are still in that process. We are everyday facing new challenges and wants and all of that takes time and money,” said Tami. “Patience is what I need to remember most. All will come in time and I have to remember that.”

Tami spends every day doing something for the business. “Whether it is bartender, cook, cleaner or the business paperwork side, such as ordering and planning entertainment, I am doing something,” Tami stated. “Sometimes it is just going around to other taverns and try to plan outings and hear what people actually want.”

Tami likes working for herself better than being employed by someone else. “I know what I want and how I want people to feel when they come to Groovy’s. I want them to feel like it is their own and that they are welcome,” Tami said.

She enjoys meeting people and seeing new faces too. “That means the word is getting out and people are coming in,” Tami stated.

She is not alone in her venture however. She is fortunate to have a great support system in place. “My family has been very excited and they help me daily. My husband is very supportive and helps tons with laundry and the kids and daily routines that I just haven’t been so routine anymore,” Tami said. My daughter is such a great help. She is great with her brother and very self-reliant. I couldn’t do this without her.

Her son, Mason, also enjoys being a part of the business. “He thinks the business is his and he wants to take orders,” Tami stated.

Groovy’s is located at 336 N. Oakland Avenue in Oakland, NE. They can be reached at 402-685-3006 from the hours of 11:00 a.m.-1:00 a.m.groovy's logo 1

Phone Scam Alert From Tekamah Police Department

An aggressive and sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, , has been making the rounds throughout Tekamah and Burt County. Callers claim to be employees of the IRS, but are not. These con artists can sound convincing when they call. They use fake names and bogus IRS identification badge numbers. They may know a lot about their targets, and they usually alter the caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.
Or, victims may be told they have a refund due to try to trick them into sharing private information.

If the phone isn’t answered, the scammers often leave an “urgent” callback request.

Note that the IRS will never: 1) call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill; 2) demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe; 3) require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card; 4) ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone; or 5) threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.
