A week ago today, a storm hit many areas of northeast Nebraska, causing a great deal of damage to homes, vehicles and fields in the area. Many people were in their basements, wondering what was coming their way.
“Tom, our daughter Hannah, and I were huddled in the basement,” stated Kristie Jensen of Craig, NE. “I was talking to our son Dylan on my cell phone. He asked how we were and before I could answer, I lost service.”
Jensen’s house was hit pretty hard. “We placed a tarp

over the picture window. It is double paned and only the outside pane broke,” Kristie said. Their is also some structural damage to a corner of the house. “We can’t open one of the doors to the house,: Kristie stated. Hail damage was also very visible on the outside of their house.
That wasn’t all that happened to their home. A building from across the street blew into their yard, causing quite a mess. One of their vehicles parked outside was also damaged in the storm.
Many other homes were damaged by trees and strong winds.
Uehling also suffered extensive damage to many homes. The damage was different there, as it appears the strong wind seemed to change direction, damaging different sides of homes, taking out windows and stripping leaves right off of the trees.
Many farmers lost their crops or are waiting to see if some of them will come back from the hail. Some are attempting to replant, with the hopes of salvaging something from this ordeal.
The citizens of Craig and Uehling didn’t let the storm get them down. Equipment was brought in to help in the clean up. People were smiling and waving to those coming to assist them.
The community pride was a sight to behold.

“We are offering free admission for the pool season,” stated Lyons Mayor Andy Fuston. This will begin once the new pool opens, which should be around the middle of June.
“With the pool not being ready for a Memorial Day opening and the date now a moving target, we were talking about how best to handle season passes, etc.” said Fuston. “I just said maybe we should open the pool for free and everyone there thought that would be a great idea.” By everyone, the mayor is referring to the members of the city council. The decision was made at Tuesday’s city council meeting.
“I’m excited that we will be offering free admission to the pool this season; not only to say thank you to the community for their patience while the pool gets finished up but to also showcase what a great destination our pool can be for our local patrons as well as to those living in surrounding communities,” stated Fuston.
Yes, it will be a shorter season this year, “but a really fun and exciting one,” said Fuston.

Lincoln, NE – Nebraska Republican Gubernatorial Nominee Pete Ricketts today named Lavon Heidemann, current Lieutenant Governor, farmer and livestock producer, former Regent, and former state senator, as his running mate and nominee for Lieutenant Governor.
“Lavon is a man of great character, broad experience, and collaborative skill,” Ricketts said. “In the many roles he’s filled – farmer, school board member, volunteer firefighter, state senator, and now as Lt. Governor – he’s earned the respect of others by being honest, working hard, and working till the job is done. An expert on the state budget and a former key leader in the Legislature, he’s the partner I need to help grow new opportunities in Nebraska.”
“I am honored to join Pete in his campaign to be Nebraska’s next governor,” Heidemann said. “I am excited about his vision for new growth and responsible reform. I look forward to partnering with him to develop constructive relationships within the Legislature and throughout Nebraska that will help improve state services and create conditions for the growth of new and better-paying jobs.”
Heidemann was appointed Lieutenant Governor in February 2013. Prior to that, he briefly served on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. From 2005 to 2013, he was a state senator. During six of those years, he served as chairman of the Appropriations Committee. He began his public service in 1996 as a member of the Elk Creek School Board. He is a long-time member of the Nebraska Cattlemen and Nebraska Farm Bureau.
Heidemann is a farmer, livestock producer, and volunteer firefighter from Elk Creek in Johnson County. His work experience includes time as general foreman for a drilling company in Alaska. He was born in Pawnee City and graduated from Elk Creek High School. Heidemann and his wife Robin attend St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Elk Creek. They have three children and six grandchildren.
