Senator Brasch Announces Re-election

Bancroft, Neb – State Senator Lydia Brasch, who is Vice-chair of the Natural Resources committee and also serves on the Rules, State-Tribal Relations, and Transportation and Telecommunications Committees, has officially filed to run for re-election to the Nebraska Unicameral.

“It is such an honor to be able to serve my constituents in the Legislature,” said Brasch. “I have worked hard to ensure my office is responsive to constituent needs and to provide effective representation for the individuals and interests of District 16.”

Some of Senator Brasch’s accomplishments include introduction and passage of:

  • LB690 (2011) amended parent parental notification requirements for an abortion to require notarized written consent from a pregnant woman less than eighteen years of age and one of her parents or a legal guardian before obtaining an abortion. (Introduced by Sen. Brasch, signed by Governor Heineman)
  • LB1039 (2012) increased penalties for violating school bus passing laws and required that vehicles remain stopped only until the stop signal arm is retracted and the bus resumes motion. (Introduced by Senator Brasch, signed by Governor Heineman)
  • LB860 (2012) – clarified a sales tax exemption for biochips used for genetic and/or protein analysis of production livestock, commercially produced plants, companion animals and research animals. (Prioritized by Senator Brasch, signed by Governor Heineman)
  • LB296 (2013) raised tax deduction limits for contributions made to the Nebraska College Savings Program from $2,500 to $5,000 for a married person filing separately and to $10,000 for a joint filing. (Cosponored and prioritized by Senator Brasch, signed by Governor Heineman)
  • LB499 (2013) gave the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission the power to pass “commission orders” which allows the commission to more easily respond to public input regarding conservation orders, seasons, bag limits, and open and closed areas. (Introduced by Senator Brasch, signed by Governor Heineman)

3-Star Status Awarded to Oakland Public Library

“A star review from Library Journal is impressive, but the smiles we see on our patron’s faces put the “stars” in our eyes!” stated Oakland Library Director Rosa Schmidt.

Oakland’s library was one of nine libraries in the state of Nebraska to be awarded 3-Star status from the Library Journal. “We were one of nine libraries in Nebraska to be given a star rating. Four of us were first timers; Bloomfield Public Library, Genoa Public Library, Creighton Public Library and Oakland Public Library,” Rosa said. “The remaining libraries, Atkinson, Central City, Neligh, Hartington and Falls City Public Libraries have been awarded star reviews in the past as well.”

One of the requirements of achieving yearly State Certification is to complete the annual State Statistical report. “This is a very in depth report that I will soon be completing for the last fiscal year. The information is then available via Bibliostat Connect,” Rosa stated.

This information is then analyzed and compared by those such as a Library Journal. “Library Journal issues an “Index of Public Library Service: each year, rating libraries across the nation,” Rosa said.

Rosa could only think about completing the state stat report on time and getting back to the job at hand in the library. “I was completely caught unaware that we, the Oakland Public Library, had achieved star review,” Rosa stated.

The measures used in this year’s ratings by the Library Journal were circulation per capita, visits per capita, program attendance per capita and public internet computer use per capita.

“It is always a good feeling to be recognized by your peers for your successes, so receiving this Star Rating and having the Oakland Public Library be listed among so many wonderful libraries is an amazing thing!” Rosa said.

Rosa is aware that there is no guarantee that doing well one year will result in the same outcome year to year. “Our goal is always to provide the best possible service to our community that we can,” Rosa stated.

Wise Elected President

“I am honored. It is a privilege for me to serve,” stated Rachel Wise of Oakland, the newly elected President of the Nebraska State Board of Education.

Rachel was elected to the Board of Education in November of 2012 and began serving a four-year term in January of 2013. “I was voted in as President at the January 7th 2014 board meeting,” Rachel said. The term is for one year. There are a total of eight members on the board, each of who represent a geographic area of the state. “I will preside over the meetings, serve as a primary spokesperson for some of the issues on the board, establish the agenda for the year and for each meeting, with input from other board members and the commissioner, assign committees,” Rachel stated.

Rachel retired from full-time employment in June of 2012 with an extensive career in education. “I wanted to stay engaged in some capacity with education, which was the primary reason I ran for office,” Rachel said.

Some of Rachel’s goals are to continue to work with the legislature and Nebraska educators in developing an accountability system for Nebraska that meets the needs of the students and communities. “The continued work on the revision of Nebraska standards for language arts and math is also a priority for this year,” Rachel stated. “Other areas of interest include special education, gifted education, career and technical education as well as early childhood.”

Rachel looks at challenges as opportunities. “The board has an opportunity to work with a new commissioner in developing the vision for education and for the Nebraska Department of Education that meets the needs of Nebraska’s children,” Rachel said.

She will continue to submit monthly articles to Kat Country Hub, keeping the citizens of Nebraska apprised of the board’s activities.

Rachel and her husband Gordon Nelson are rural Oakland residents.

Senator Brasch Files for Re-election

Day 3 of 103rd Legislature, 2nd Session was memorable. Following adjournment, I filed for re-election! I humbly ask for the privilege and great honor to continue working as State Senator for District 16, and our state. In the past three years, the people of District 16, and our great state have shown me exponentially, beyond words your great hearts, strong backs, brilliant minds and your God given power unlike none other. You have lifted me and inspired me in the most unexpected ways and unusual places. I want to work beside you, with you, and for you. It is important, as Senators we Legislate annually and work together to carefully map the course protecting the present and future of many generations. A prayer said by a Chaplin of the Day during our Legislature a year or so ago has stayed with me. “…with power comes great responsibility and challenges…it also reveals your heart….”. Many things have been accomplished, there is much more to be done. Thank you to all for your support and prayers; now I ask please for your support and continued prayers in my re-election this year.

John G.Neihardt Upcoming Event

  1. Steamboat Wrecks, January 19, 2014At 2:00 pm on Sunday, January 19th, self-proclaimed steamboat hunter, Pete King of Sergeant Bluff, will give a presentation on historic steamboat wrecks along what he calls “the deadliest mile,” the once winding, snaky section of the Missouri River just south of Onawa, IA and Decatur, NE. Providing historical photographs, King will describe the events and aftermath of several of the nearly a dozen sunken steamboats in this area (out of nearly 400 along the entire river). Fascinated by the story of the Bertrand, which sank in 1865 at DeSoto Bend, and the recovered artifacts on display at the museum near Missouri Valley, he began searching on his own using a magnetometer, which detects iron in the soil and, over the past 40 years he has uncovered 31 relics. He believes he has located one of these ships, the Nugget, a supply boat headed for Montana in 1866, buried in about 50 feet of mud. This is his major project now, working with the land owner to attempt excavation. It is yet a mystery whether it went down as a loaded boat, which will mean lots of artifacts, or as a salvaged boat, where the owners were able to off-load before it sank.

The program begins at 2 p.m. with a reception following; both are free and open to the public.

For more information, please contact the Neihardt State Historic Site at 1-402-648-3388 or 1-888-777-4667 or by email at neihardt@gpcom.net. Visit the site at 306 W. Elm Street, Bancroft, NE.
