Devan Collins receives award at Last Fling til Spring

Devan Collins of Lyons participated in the 24th annual Last Fling Til Spring held in West Point Sun., Sept. 14th.

His entry was a 1951 Chevrolet pickup. “I have had it for a year and a half. I restored the interior, the wood in the back, cleaned up the motor, put new tires and rims,” Devan stated. “It only has 48,000 original miles.”

He also earned an award for all of his efforts. “I received the class ward. This was the first time in any car show,” Devan said.

Devan’s hard work also benefitted him in other ways. “The experience that I had was amazing,” Devan stated. Talking to people with their trucks like mine and answering questions and explaining what I have done to my truck was great.”

Singer/Songwriter to perform at Decatur Museum

On Sunday, September 29, 2013, at 2 p.m. singer/songwriter Michael McDonald will be performing on the grounds of the Decatur Museum.

Through original songs and stories, McDonald leads a lively celebration of the challenges and adventures faced by Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery. His program focuses on the Irish and Scots-Irish heritage of members of the great river expeditions and mountain men. Sgt. Charles Floyd and young George Shannon figure prominently in his program.

By Norma Farrens

The program is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served after the performance. Free will offerings will be accepted. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs though some seating will be provided. Visitors may tour the main and second floors of the museum where an exhibit on area schools is on display. In case of inclement weather the program will be moved inside the museum.

McDonald hails from Yankton County, South Dakota, growing up on a couple of farms with six brothers and a sister. He is a Vietnam era veteran, a graduate of the University of South Dakota, and is retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He and his wife, Deb, have three children and two grandchildren and live in Yankton.

The program is made possible by Humanities Nebraska and is one of approximately 300 programs offered the Humanities Nebraska Speakers Bureau.

HarvestFest Parade

More HarvestFest

HarvestFest

Even though it was a hot day, HarvestFest in Bancroft had a huge attendance. “It was a great day. I am glad people turned out for the activities that were planned,” Amber Bridges, one of the community club members that planned the event, stated.

HarvestFest this Saturday in Bancroft

“HarvestFest in Bancroft is a not to be missed event this year,” stated Amber Bridges of the Bancroft Community Club, organizers of the event.

The event is being held this Sat., Sept. 7th from 7:00 a.m. until way past bedtime. There are many events throughout the day beginning with a one-mile fun run/walk or 5K. This is followed by breakfast at Grandma’s Attic, kids tractor pull, dodgeball, and co-ed sand volleyball. That is just a few of the events listed on the flyers around town.

There will be a Kiddie Parade at 10:00 a.m. on Main Street. From 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. there is a car and motorcycle show at the Bancroft park. A tractor show will be held at the same time on Main Street.

A tractor pull is at noon at Highway 16 near CVA. From 1:00-3:00 p.m. there is a Big Wheels Race.

The HarvestFest parade will be held at 5:00 p.m. followed by a Cuming County Feeders meal on Main Street. And a watermelon feed.

The conclusion of the day is a dance from 9:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m. featuring Silver Moon on Main Street.

The HarvestFest has been an annual event in Bancroft for many years. “I am not sure how many, but it has been happening since I was little,” Amber said.

There isn’t a special reason for the event. “It is just a celebration in town,” Amber stated.

The Bancroft Community Club has been busy organizing all of the events to insure a great time for everyone. “There are many new activities on the schedule this year, plus some returning ones,” Amber said. “It’s great to have so many activities to do throughout the day for the entire family, from the smallest of small to the wisest of wise.”

For a complete list of activities, please look at the flyer included in this story. There are also flyers in all of the area businesses in Bancroft and surrounding communities listing the events of the day.
