“We are extremely proud and excited to welcome the Center as an official sponsor of the 2015 Good Living Tour,” said Hear Nebraska Executive Director Andrew Norman. “The Center’s mission to establish strong rural communities in Nebraska by empowering citizens aligns perfectly with this project’s goal to help these communities attract and retain young people. It couldn’t be a better fit.”

Tyler Vacha, Director of Development, Engagement, and Operations at the Center for Rural Affairs, states, “It’s great to see new and exciting projects like this come to Rural Nebraska. Hear Nebraska should be commended for taking steps to ensure rural Nebraskans get to experience and support our homegrown musicians. U.S. stocks are down some today, pausing one session after the Dow posted its biggest one-day gain in more than three months. The modest moves followed a surge in stocks on Friday, after the government’s employment report for April indicated the economy was pulling out of its first-quarter slump.  Employers added 223,000 jobs in April.

Corn -1 ½ @ $3.61 ½
Beans Even @ $9.76

Reports: EXPORT INSPECTIONS @ 10 AM, CROP PROGRESS @ 3 PM; MAY USDA S&D REPORT TOMORROW @ 11 AM

Corn: Range-bound grain markets on Friday and again overnight, with the trade anticipating market-moving numbers today after crop progress report with many thinking 70-75% corn planted, but then attention shifts towards tomorrows USDA “Supply & Demand” report.  Where the bears are anticipating a bump in new crop ending stocks through increased yield expectations and demand reduction.

Soybeans: The Chinese government is again boosting economic stimulus by further reducing interest rates which is positive for beans.  Keeping on track, with the crop progress report today, many traders are thinking today’s crop progress data will show U.S producers 25-30% planted and well ahead of their historical pace.

Bird-Flu – According to the New York Times, Iowa agriculture officials said on Friday that bird flu would claim an additional four million egg-laying chickens on two more farms in a county already hit by the disease. Officials are waiting for preliminary tests on two farms in Wright County to be confirmed. The county reported earlier that a farm with 2.8 million chickens was affected. Governor Ricketts Vetoes Bills to Raise Gas Tax

Governor Ricketts vetoed LB610 and LB610A which would raise Nebraska’s gas tax. This tax increase passed by the Legislature would make the state’s gas tax the 16th highest in the nation while also surpassing the gas tax rate of every state that borders Nebraska.

“The number one issue I hear about from hardworking Nebraskans is the need for tax relief,” said Governor Ricketts. “Whether they are farmers and home owners seeking relief from high property taxes or businesses being held back by our second-highest-in-the region income tax rates, the message is clear:  Nebraskans want and deserve tax relief.

“LB 610 would do the exact opposite by imposing a $75 million per year tax increase.  The new tax would be added to the 25.6 cents Nebraskans are already paying in state gas tax per gallon of gasoline.  This is a 23 percent increase.

“At this level, Nebraska’s gas tax rate would be the 16th highest in the country – surpassing the national average and surpassing the gas tax rate of every state that borders our state.  The increased gas tax rate would also be about two times our state’s top income tax rate.”

“I remain committed to addressing our state and local infrastructure needs.  This is an area that is vital to our continued economic growth.  I cannot, however, support raising taxes as the first solution to this issue.”

Governor Ricketts’ full veto message is attached.
