Janice R. Ray, 56, of Fremont NE


Janice R. Ray, age 56, of Fremont, Nebraska passed away Saturday, December 13, 2014, at the Fremont Area Medical Center in Fremont. Memorial services will be held Thursday, December 18, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Schuyler, Nebraska with Jerry L. Kracl, Speaker. Committal will be in the Schuyler Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday morning at the church, one hour prior to service time. Memorials may be directed towards families choice. Janice was born August 15, 1958 in Schuyler, Nebraska to Avlin and Phyllis (Grotelueschen) Hoy.  She graduated from North Bend High School in 1976, and attended Metro Community College where she earned her associate degree in nursing home administration.  She also attended Bellevue University and studied health care management.  Janice had worked at the Parkview Nursing Home in Dodge for two years.

In February of 1977, Janice was united in marriage to Noel “Buddy” Ray, Jr. at the Methodist Church in North Bend.  Janice lived in North Bend, Snyder and Howells, and had lived in Fremont the last 3 years.  She was a former member of the Library board in Snyder and the Lions Club International.

She is survived by her daughters: Jill (Dennis) Metz of Oakland, NE, Jennifer (Cody) Stracke of Fremont, Janelle (Tim) Boyd of Gainesville, Georgia.  Brothers Jim (Lou) Hoy of Ashburn, Virginia, Gary Hoy of Toelle, Utah. Sisters: Debra (Gerald) Shannon of Schuyler, Diane (Brent) Johnson of Grand Island.  Grandchildren: Haylee (14), Riley (3) and Alivia (2) Metz, Jaiden Ray (7), Raycen Stracke (4 mo.), Addison (8) and Blakely(6) Boyd.  Four Nieces and one Nephew.  Family Friend and caregiver Teresa Wilcox of Fremont.

She was preceded in death by her parents and infant brother, Dennis Alvin.

Douglas S. McQuistan, 90, of Newton KS Formerly of Pender NE


Douglas S. McQuistan, a resident at Kansas Christian Home, went home to his Lord on Saturday December 13, 2014. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton, KS.

Graveside services and interment will be on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at 2:00 p.m., at the Wakefield Cemetery in Wakefield, Nebraska.

A memorial celebration of Doug’s life will be held in Newton, KS at the Kansas Christian Home Living room on December 26, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Doug was born on March 9, 1924 to Roland and Winifred (Bressler) McQuistan in Pender, Nebraska. He was raised on a farm near Pender. He attended high school in Wakefield Nebraska where he met his bride, Bonnie (Heydon) McQuistan. They were married August 8, 1943. The couple graduated from San Jose Bible College (Hope University) in San Jose, California. They were married 61 years.

Doug is survived by a daughter Mavis (McQuistan) and Sherman Sack of Newton, and a son Lonnie and Carol McQuistan of Las Vegas Nevada. Douglas had 11 grandchildren: Jim and Yvonne (Sack) Wickenkamp of Oronogo, Missouri, Garth and Aimee (Sack) Mock of Newton, Joe and Charisa (Sack) Thiessen of Newton, Christopher and Desiree (Sack) Skibbe of Newton. Tammie McQuistan, Tonya (McQuistan) Nichols, Tracie (McQuistan) Davenport, Douglas E. McQuistan, David McQuistan, Pat McQuistan, Paul McQuistan and a host of great-grandchildren and friends.

Eunice C. Shepard, 95, of Hooper NE Formerly of Fremont NE


Eunice C. Shepard, 95 years, of Hooper, NE formerly of Fremont, NE passed away Friday December 12, 2014 at the Hooper Care Center in Hooper. Eunice was born May 20, 1919 in Hooper, NE to Amos J. and Nora C. (Lueninghoener) Sohl. She grew up in Hooper and had lived in Ainsworth, NE and Denver, CO and then moved to Fremont. Eunice married Lawrence M. Shepard on December 27, 1948 in Norfolk, NE. Lawrence preceded her in death on January 9, 1979.

Eunice was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hooper. She enjoyed cooking, flowers, gardening and spending time with her family.

She is survived by son, Larry and wife, Linda Shepard of Fremont; daughter, Sharon and husband, LaVern Larsen of Fremont; five grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence; brother, Ken Sohl; sisters, Gladys Clough, Marie Uhler, Ruth Heelan and Clara Mae Bourrett; and granddaughter, Dawn Wiese.

Funeral service will be 2:30 PM, Monday, December 15, 2014 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hooper. The Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 PM to 5 PM, with family receiving friends from 4 PM to 5 PM at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will continue on Monday 1 hr prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Hooper Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or to Redeemer Lutheran Church.

JANET M. KING, 76 years, of Tekamah, Nebraska, passed away, Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at Crowell Memorial Home in Blair, Nebraska, after several months of a lingering illness.

Janet Marion (Stevens) King was born July 11, 1938, in Tekamah to Evert and Lucille (Martin) Stevens. Janet received her elementary education from a one room school house in Silver Creek Township and graduated from Tekamah High School. She also attended Bahner College of Hairstyling in Fremont, Nebraska, where she received her education in cosmetology.
On July 9, 1993, Janet was married to Leroy King at the United Methodist Church in Tekamah. They lived on a farm west of Tekamah until his passing in 1998, at which time she moved into town.
Janet was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she was a deaconess for several years. She was a member of Eastern Star as a young woman and later joined the Red Hatters Society and enjoyed all the activities she was involved in with these organizations. Janet loved gardening and cooking. She always enjoyed talking about what was growing in her garden or what new recipe she had tried. She always had a soft spot for animals, especially cats, and she loved her cat, Tucker.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Leroy.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Noelle Stevens of Omaha; two brothers and their wives: Clark and Chae Stevens of Menifee, California, Mark and Robyn Stevens of Peoria, Arizona.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Monday, December 15, 2014, 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Tekamah.

VISITATION: Sunday, December 14, 2014, from 2 – 5 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Home in Tekamah. Visitation Monday will be held at the church one hour prior to the service.

Jodi L. (LeRette) Sutton, 55 years, of Overland Park, Kansas, formerly of Fremont, passed away surrounded by family Thursday, December 4, 2014 at home, due to complications of ALS. Jodi was born November 23, 1959 in Long Beach, CA to Gerald and Anna (Case) LeRette. She grew up in Fremont and was a 1977 graduate of Logan View High School. Jodi married Kerry Sutton on October 3, 1981 at the Fremont Presbyterian Church. She lived in several locations throughout the United States and attended various United Methodist Churches, due to Kerry’s military career. They retired in the Kansas City area in 2009.

Jodi was a homemaker and devoted most of her life to her family. She enjoyed camping, fishing and outdoor activities involving her children and grandchildren. Jodi enjoyed working as an in-home daycare provider for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Kerry; daughters, Jenny and husband, Dustan Thornton and their daughter, Emma of Leavenworth, KS, Katherine and husband, Charles Miller and their son, Wesley of Shawnee, KS and Lisa and husband, Brian Otto of Kansas City, MO; mother, Anna LeRette of Fremont; brothers, Richard LeRette of Fremont, Michael and wife, Candie LeRette of Santa Rosa, CA and Jerry LeRette of Castro Valley, CA.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gerald LeRette; and sister-in-law, Mary (O’Brien) LeRette

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. The Rev. Scott Jensen will officiate. There will be no visitation. Burial will be at Ridge Cemetery in Fremont. Memorials may be given to the Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care.

Frederick M. (Fritz) Renz, 86, of Thurston, NE, passed away Sunday, December 7, 2014, at Legacy Gardens Rehabilitation Center in Pender, NE. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Pender, NE; with Father Gerald Leise officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 9, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church. A prayer service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Frederick was born July 2, 1928 in Carroll, NE to Thomas and Lena (Bartels) Renz. He graduated from Homer High School in 1946. On January 26, 1951, he married Beth Conway in Winnebago, NE. To this union, 8 children were born. In 1957, Frederick was drafted into the United States Army where he served in the Korean War for two years.

After returning from the war, Frederick began farming. He co-owned and operated Thurston Manufacturing and co-owned the Thurston Bar. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Pender, NE. Frederick was a commander in the Thurston American Legion, a member of the Thurston Fire Department, and a town board member. He loved being outside on the farm and fishing. He also enjoyed reading.

Frederick is survived by his wife, Mary (Beth) Renz; sons, Tim Renz of Casper, WY, Tom (Linda) Renz of Thurston, NE, Cary (Peggy) Renz of Bancroft, NE, and Robert (Jana) Renz of Thurston, NE; daughters Catherine (Terry) Simonsen of Pender, NE, Janis (Daryl) Harrison of Thurston, NE, Leanne (Andrew) Miller of Shiloh, IL; sisters Mildred Babb of Corvallis, OR, Dorothy Farthing of Stayton, OR, Betty Hagberg of Kalamazoo, MI, Darlene Smith of Decatur, NE, 17 grandchildren, and 27 great grandchildren.

Zeltha M. (Nelson) Larson, 89, of Pender, Nebraska died on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, Nebraska. Memorial services for Zeltha will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Pender; Pastor Dan Springer will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Friday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Pender. Burial will be in the Rosehill Cemetery of Pender. Memorials are suggested to family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Pender, NE.

Zeltha was born on May 21, 1925 in Oakland, Nebraska, the daughter of Rudalth and Elzada (Close) Nelson. After graduating from West Point High School in 1943, Zeltha attended Wayne State Teachers College. She taught rural school west of Pender at District #4 and #5. On March 4, 1945, she was united in marriage to Clarence L. Larson. To this union four children were born: Shirley, Lyle, Deborah, and Myra. The couple farmed in the Pender area. Zeltha enjoyed to garden and paint and was an active member of her church serving on the Ladies Aid.

She is survived by her son Lyle (Karen) Larson of Pender, NE, daughters Deborah (Craig) Luehr of Kenya, Africa and Shirley (Bill) Prabulos of Lincoln, NE, four grandchildren, three step grandchildren and ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Zeltha was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clarence, daughter Myra Larson, sister Muriel Pearson and brothers Harold and Erwin Nelson.
