Cyndy M. Heng, 74, of Tekamah NE


CYNDY M. HENG, 74 years, of Tekamah, Nebraska, passed away peacefully at her home in Tekamah on Wednesday, October 15, 2014.

Cyndy Marie (Malone) Heng was born November 16, 1939, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Her parents Ansel and Arlene (Watcher) Malone resided at a farm in Douglas, Nebraska, until 1954. She attended Douglas Public Schools from first grade through 8th grade.

In 1954, the family moved to Lincoln, where Cyndy attended Jr and Sr high school. The family returned to Douglas for her senior year at Douglas High School.  In August of 1956, Cyndy met Edwin Heng at a dance in Syracuse, Nebraska. Edwin was home on leave from the army. They corresponded until his discharge in 1957. Cyndy went to work at an insurance company in Lincoln. On August 14, 1958, Edwin and Cyndy were married and lived in Lincoln.

In 1960, the family moved to Lyons, Nebraska, and in 1963, moved to Tekamah. Cyndy was a stay-at-home mom. She joined a morning and evening bowling league and for several years she played softball on the Tekamah women’s team. She was active for many years in the Tekamah Junior Women’s Association. Cyndy was an active member of the St. Patrick’s parish.

The last years of Cyndy’s life were spent with grandchildren. Cyndy and Ed enjoyed attending their grandchildren’s events. They made Papa and Nana very proud.

She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Randy.

Survivors include her husband, Edwin; son, Kirk of Omaha, NE; daughter and son-in-law, Kristi and Todd Wragge of Hampton, IA; daughter-in-law, Sandy Heng of Omaha; six grandchildren, Alexandra  and Samantha Heng, McKenna, Paige, Samuel, and Claire Wragge; sister and brother-in-law, Marcene and Carl Josephson of Linn Creek, MO; brother and sister-in-law, Wesley and Kathy Malone of Douglas, NE; many other relatives and friends.

MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL:  Monday, October 20, 2014, 10:00 am St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Tekamah, NE.

VISITATION: Sunday, 5:30 – 7 pm with family receiving friends. VIGIL SERVICE at 7:00 pm all at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Visitation Monday will also be held at the church one hour prior to the service.

Carolyn Jean Johnson, 74, of South Dakota


Carolyn Jean Johnson was born August 18, 1940 in Hartville, Missouri to Mabel Virginia (Mitchell) and Carroll Hake. She passed away peacefully at the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital on October 13, 2014 at the age of 74 years, 1 month and 25 days.

Jean went to Reed Elementary in Springfield MO until the 8th grade. She then helped her family care for nieces and nephews while working waitressing. Jean married the love of her life, Virgil Johnson on May 3, 1958 offficiated by Rev. Dowel at Highstreet Baptist Church in Springfield MO with her parents present. The couple resided in Springfield until Virgil was released from active duty in the Army.

Three years after Virgil was discharged from duty, they moved back to South Dakota and then to California for a short period of time before returning to South Dakota where they would remain. To this union they were blessed with two children, Timothy Dean and Theresa “Tess” Jean.

In October 1970, Virgil and Jean purchased the farm where they have since resided. Jean worked that farm and loved it dearly. Whether she was chopping weeds or taking care of the livestock, (goats and geese included) she loved being there. In 1989 Virgil and Jean purchased the Sundown Lounge where she worked alongside Virgil until their retirement and sale in 2000.

Jean loved her family dearly. She enjoyed watching and feeding the Baltimore Orioles and Hummingbirds that came to visit. She doted on her pets, flowers and gardens and especially loved playing games with her family. Highest on her list, though, was spending time with Virgil. Whether they were frying chicken, tending gardens or decorating their home everything was made more beautiful when Jean touched it. Her family reveled in the benefits of that care every time they were with her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Delores June Dye, eight brother in laws, and seven sister-in-laws.

Survivors include her husband, Virgil of Irene; son Timothy of Yankton, daughter Theresa (Larry) Johnson, Oakland, NE; four grandchildren:  Ryan Johnson, Cody Johnson, Jamison Johnson and Lyndsey Johnson and many nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Friday, October 17, 2014, 10:30 a.m., First English Lutheran Church in Centerville, SD.

VISITATION: Thursday 5 – 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6 – 8 p.m. at Hansen Funeral Home in Irene. Visitation will also be held at the church Friday one hour prior to the service.

BURIAL: Union Cemetery, Wakonda, SD.

Mary Ellen Danielson, 88, of West Point NE


Mary Ellen Danielson, age 88,  of West Point, Nebraska passed away Sunday, October 12, 2014 at the West Point Living Center.  Funeral Service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at  Trinity Church in West Point, with Reverend Les Parmenter officiating. .  Burial at Mount Hope Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 14th, from noon until 8 p.m. at the Stokely Funeral Home, in West Point with family receiving friends from 6 until 8 p.m.  A memorial has been established.  Stokely Funeral Home in West Point is in charge of these arrangements.

Mary Ellen Woerner was born April 15, 1926 in West Point to Fred and Elsie (Larson) Woerner.  She grew up in West Point and attended West Point Public Schools.  On September 10, 1942, Mary Ellen married John Danielson at the Methodist parsonage in Tekamah.
 
Mary Ellen was a member of Trinity Church and VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries.  She worked as a sales clerk at Baumann’s Department store, Medicine Chest, and retired from Pamida.
 
Survivors include her daughter Deb Andrews of Corning, IA; sons Gary (Mary Lou) Danielson of Urbana, IA and Randy (Donna) Danielson of Lincoln; daughter-in-law Carol Danielson of Lincoln; sisters-in-law Janice Woerner of West Point, Delores Johnson and Bonnie Lang of Lyons, and Frelon Danielson of Oakland; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. 
Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents; husband John on May 4, 1996; son John on March 15, 2014; son-in-law Greg Andrews; sisters Vivian Moeller, Alice Vakiner, and Suzie Tyrrell; and brothers Fred and Leonard Woerner.

Glenn E. Murphy, 91, of Walthill, NE passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 09, 2014 at Legacy Garden Living Center in Pender, NE. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 13, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Walthill, NE; with Father Dan Wittrock and Father Dave Korth as Celebrants. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, October 12, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Walthill, NE. Glenn was born on August 21, 1923 to Edward and Henrietta (Mitchell) Murphy in Rosalie, NE. He attended and graduated from Rosalie High School in 1940. On December 7, 1948 Glenn married Laura M. Novak at St. John’s Catholic Church in Pender, NE.

Glenn served on the Walthill Township Board and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Walthill. Glenn had a great love for the land and farmed his entire adult life. He enjoyed farming and working with his livestock. His hobbies included 4-H Livestock.

Glenn is survived by his sons, Elvin (Lou Ann) Murphy of St. Joseph, MO and Mike (Teresa) Murphy of Walthill, NE; and a daughter Evelyn (Clark) Koch of Fremont, NE. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and a brother Don Murphy of Walthill, NE.

Glenn is preceded in death by his parents and his wife Laura on October 4, 2003, brothers Bernard, Clarence and Wilbur Murphy, and a sister Mildred Murphy Shoop.

Richard Lee Poeschl, 65, of Fountain Hills AZ


Richard Lee Poeschl, age 65, of Fountain Hills, Arizona passed away October 3rd, 2014 at the home of his son Clint and his wife Sarah in Overland Park, Kansas.  Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 9th, at 11 a.m. at the Faith Westwood United Methodist Church in Omaha at 4814 Oaks Lane.  Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.   Richard is the brother of Cheryl, Mrs. Darrell Denker of Oakland.

Richard Lee Poeschl was born to Adrian and Gloria (Swanson) Poeschl on April 1st 1949 in Oakland, Nebraska.  Rich grew up in West Point, NE, until the first grade when the family moved to Elkhorn, NE. He graduated from Wahoo Public Schools in 1967 and then joined the Army National Guard in Lincoln. He was a crew chief on Huey Helicopters. He then attended Southeast Community College where he received an Associated Arts Degree.

In 1970 Rich married Lyn Sorenson in Wahoo, Nebraska. Rich passed away on their 44th Anniversary. They had two children, Jennifer Lyn Poeschl and Clinton Lee Poeschl.

They lived in Wahoo, where he opened his own business, Poeschl Body and Frame. He then began working for American Family Insurance in the claims department for 3 years. Rich began selling American Family Insurance where he then became a manager for about 12 years. During that time they lived in Lincoln and Omaha Nebraska.

In May of 2006 they decided to move to Fountain Hills, Arizona, where he took over an agency and returned to selling policies. Lyn worked right beside him, and son Clint followed in his fathers footsteps and has been a part of the American Family Insurance Company as a State Director. Daughter Jennifer also worked for her Dad as an agent and Customer Service Representative.

Rich loved to have a good time and always knew the latest, funniest jokes! He also loved to cook and entertain. His specialty was smoking all sorts of meats and grilling! Cars, trucks, and motorcycles filled his garage and his mind. If any of us had a question about any of our vehicles, we just needed to ask him. He knew what the problem was and how to fix it. Lyn and Rich loved to travel and went as often as they could. A favorite spot was California beaches, Las Vegas, and trips with his sister and brother in law.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Adrian and Gloria, a grandson Grant Poeschl, and father in law Melvin Sorenson.

He is survived by his wife Lyn, daughter Jennifer and husband James Collins and grandson Tanner, step grandson Carson Collins and step granddaughter Mariah Collins, and Rich’s son Clint, and his wife Sarah and granddaughters Grace and Gabrielle: his sister Cheryl (Darrell) Denker, brother Mark (Nancy) Poeschl, and mother in law Gail Sorenson. Numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends.

DONALD KEITH SPECK, 86 years, of Tekamah, Nebraska

Donald K. Speck, 86, of Tekamah, Nebraska, passed from this earthly life on September 29, 2014 at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair, Nebraska. Don was born February 3, 1928, in Burt County, Nebraska, to Gordon and Florence (Scherner) Speck. Other than two years serving his country in the Korean Conflict, he lived his entire life in Tekamah. Upon graduation from Tekamah High School, Don attended telegraph operator school in Omaha, where he discovered an office environment didn’t suit him. Preferring open spaces, Don worked for several different enterprises in Tekamah over the years, all with ties to agriculture and the outdoors.

Following his stint in the Army, he returned to Tekamah in 1951, where a young woman working in a local restaurant caught his fancy. Don and Jean J. Rapp were united in marriage April 18, 1954. They were blessed with three children, Leta, Judy, and Leon.

Don was loyal to his family and his country. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Don was known for his quick wit and sense of humor, which he readily shared with anyone. He will be dearly missed by family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Leon Speck; parents, Gordon and Florence Speck; brothers, Kenneth Speck of Omaha, Emmett Speck of Tekamah; sisters, Inez Chase of Tekamah, Phyllis Gammel of Murdock.

Don is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean Speck of Tekamah; daughters and sons-in-law, Leta and Helmut Liesch of Kimball, NE, Judy and Clark Meyer of Allen, TX; daughter-in-law, Vicki Speck of Eldora, IA; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Smith of Sioux Falls, SD,  Debbie Speck of Tekamah; grandchildren, Benjamin Speck of Eldora, Lora and Bryce Kubli of Melbourne, IA, Terri Meyer and Jim Spallin of Allen, TX, Robert Meyer and Jessica Eagleboy of Colorado Springs, CO; great-grandchildren, Kathryn Kubli, Shaelie Spallin, Marlena Meyer, Robert Meyer, Elsa Meyer; many nieces and nephews.
