Alfred V. Egbers, 88 of Rural Uehling, NE


Alfred V. Egbers, age 88, of Rural Uehling, Nebraska passed away Friday June 6, 2014, at the Hooper Care Center in Hooper. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 11th, at the Uehling Auditorium in Uehling, Nebraska with burial to follow in the Swaburg Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Ludvigsen’s Hooper Funeral Chapel in Hooper. A memorial fund will be determined at a later date. Alfred was born November 30, 1925 on the family farm in rural Uehling, near Swaburg, to Fred and Anna (Mengedoht) Egbers. He was raised on the family farm. He graduated from the 8th grade at Swaburg School and high school at Uehling High in 1943. After high school Alfred began his long career as a farmer on the same farm as his parents and has lived in the same house ever since. Alfred was married to Beverly Krueger on December 12, 1954 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Bancroft, NE.

While farming, Alfred also raised registered Hampshire Hogs which he showed at county fairs. He also raised Angus Cattle. He owned and operated a machine shop, learning how to forge from his uncles. Alfred collected many things; among his favorites was collecting old tools, especially wrenches. He owned and worked on steam engines, teaching his children and grandchildren how to do the same. He also collected Swaburg memorabilia.

Alfred was a lifetime member of Elim Lutheran Church in Swaburg. He was the last living charter member of the Pioneer Machinery Club of Merril, IA, being a member for 44 years. Alfred was also a member of the Gas & Steamers Club, Missouri Valley Wrench Club, Charter Board Member of the Musbach Museum in Scribner and the Nebraska and National Weldors Associations.

Laura Mildred Johnston, 79 of Rosalie, NE


Laura Mildred Johnston, 79, of Rosalie, NE passed away Thursday, June 5, 2014 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, NE. Memorial services will be Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rosalie, NE; with Pastor Randall Herman officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Walthill, NE. Memorials may be directed to the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Bancroft, NE.

Laura was born December 28, 1934 to Cecil and Viola (Boggs) Hunter in Walthill, NE. She graduated from Walthill High School.

In her free time, Laura enjoyed watching western movies, crocheting, quilting and playing the guitar. She loved spending time with her family.

Laura is survived by her sons; Pat Johnston of Lincoln, NE, Jack (Kathy) Johnston of Lincoln, NE, and Shayne (Marsha) Johnston of Rosalie, NE.

Laura is preceded in death by her parents, daughter; Katie Phillips, an infant daughter, and two brothers.

Larry W. Kramer, 73, of Thurston, Nebraska formerly of Wayne, Nebraska died on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, Nebraska. Funeral services for Larry will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender with Pastor Miles Ruch officiating. The visitation will be held on Monday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Pender. Burial will be in the Rosehill Cemetery of Pender. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation.

Peggy Ann Davis, 68 of Decatur, NE


PEGGY ANN DAVIS, 68 years, of Decatur, Nebraska, passed away Thursday, May 29, 2014, at Logan Valley Manor in Lyons, Nebraska, where she had been a resident for the last two and one half years.

Peggy was born November 25, 1945, in Lyons, Nebraska, to L. Elten and V. Adene (Deman) Nelson. She attended elementary school at Deman District No. 32 and graduated from Decatur Public School in 1963.

On April 22, 1966, Peggy married George A. Davis and to this union one son, Tracy, was born.

Peggy worked for Plaindealer Publishing Co. Inc. for a time after high school and then was among the last telephone switchboard operators in Tekamah before the switchboard was eliminated. She then went to work at Woodmen of the World and then Mutual of Omaha. After her marriage they moved to Long Beach, California, for a year before returning to Decatur, where she did babysitting in her home. In 1978, she began working with Golda Stafford in the Decatur Village Clerk’s Office and took over as head clerk when Golda passed away. She held the position of Village Clerk until February 1999.

Peggy was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Decatur and at one time was a member of its Ladies Aid.  She and her sister, Pam, and their mother, Adene, put up a Winter Wonderland for the Decatur Community for 18 years and a haunted house for the community for ten years. After former Gov. Kay Orr’s visit to Decatur and after sending her a video tape of their Winter Wonderland, Peggy and Pam were both made Admirals in the Great Navy of Nebraska by Gov. Orr. Peggy along with her sister, Pam, also served as Grand Marshals for one of the Riverfront Days Parade.

Peggy loved horses and while still in school she purchased her own quarter horse and broke it to ride, which she was very proud of. She enjoyed traveling to different areas of the U.S. and especially anywhere she could ride a horse. She loved being outdoors, whether it was gardening, mowing or whatever.

Peggy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents, father- and mother-in-law, Lenten and Eva Davis; brother-in-law, Wayne Wyland.

Survivors include her husband, George of Decatur; son, Tracy Davis also of Decatur; two grandsons, Chris Giles and Colten Davis; granddaughter, Miranda Davis; sisters, Judy Wyland of Gravis Mills, MO and Pam Nelsen of Decatur; aunts, uncles, nieces nephews and a host of friends.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Monday, June 2, 2014, 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Decatur.

Harold Tell, 84 of Wakefield, NE


Wakefield resident Harold Tell closed his telegraph key for the last time on Monday, May 26, 2014 at Providence Hospital in Wayne, Nebraska, he was 84 years old. Funeral services for Harold will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Wakefield; Pastors Kelly Johnston and Dave Rusk will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Wednesday from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Bressler ~ Munderloh ~ Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield. Starting at 7:00 p.m. the family invites everyone to the Wakefield Railroad Museum to share in a celebration of Harold’s life. Burial will be in the Wakefield Cemetery, with the American Legion Post #81 presenting military honors. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Wakefield Heritage Organization and the C&NW Historical Train Depot in Wakefield.

Harold was born December 6, 1929 to the late John A. and Maude M. (Mullenberg) Tell. He grew up in Wakefield, graduating from Wakefield High School in 1948. Harold was confirmed in the Swedish Covenant Church. In October of 1951, Harold joined the United States Army serving during the Korean War in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. That same year, he married Anjenean R. Brock at the First Lutheran Church of Omaha, NE. To this union, six children were born, Stephen (Karen) Tell of Antioch, IL, Kenneth (Jan) Tell of Grand Island, NE, Sherylyn (Kyle) Gronert of Antioch, IL, Renee (Mike) Schubert of Clearwater, FL, and Kimberly Kay and Lorelei Mauree who preceded him in death. His wife Anjenean also precedes him in death. Harold also leaves eight grandchildren and several great grandchildren to mourn his passing.

Harold spent his career in the railroads as Liaison Officer of the Operating Division in Chicago among other management positions in railroading. After nearly four decades of “working on the railroad”, Harold retired in 1988. He and Anjenean moved to Branson, MO where he worked part-time as a Trolley Engineer with Silver Dollar City.

In 2009, Harold moved back to Wakefield where he helped convert the town’s old Chicago & Northwestern railroad depot into an amazing museum which is steeped in railroad and Wakefield history.

Harold loved fishing and taught his grandkids how to fish. He was an avid Big Red booster and loved traveling in their motor homes to the Husker games as well as visiting nearly all 50 states with Anjenean.

Harold was an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy; member of Harry S. Truman Branson/Hollister KVA. He and Anjenean were very involved in youth sports in the Chicago Northwest Suburban League. His tombstone tells it all — “73 & GN”, which in telegraph says, “Been great working with you & Good Night”.
