Esther Alvina (Loseke) Moeller, 85 of Oakland, NE


ESTHER ALVINA (LOSEKE) MOELLER 85 years, of Oakland, Nebraska, passed away Friday, May 16, 2014, at Oakland Heights in Oakland.

Esther was born August 24, 1928, on a farm nine miles south of Leigh, Nebraska, to Oscar and Pauline (Cattau) Loseke. She was baptized at Christ Lutheran Church, rural Leigh, Nebraska, in Colfax County.

The family moved to rural Columbus, Nebraska, when Esther was eight. She attended school at District No. 10 in Platte County until the tenth grade and graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus in 1946. After moving to the Columbus area, her folks joined the Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus, where she was confirmed in April 1942. Esther was active in Luther League and choir until moving to Scribner in 1948, where she worked as a cosmetologist and manager of Cleons Beauty Shop until 1949.

On September 27, 1949, Esther married Verdell G. Moeller at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus. They lived in Scribner for three years and were blessed with one son, Lyle. The family moved to a farm 3 ½ miles south of Craig, and were blessed with two daughters, Becky and Connie. Lefty and Esther retired and moved to Oakland in 1993. Lefty preceded her in death on  July 9, 2012.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, mother- and father-in-law, two sisters and three brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law.

Survivors include her son, Lyle (Judith) Moeller of Norfolk, NE, daughter, Becky (Tim) Stromquist, Connie (Steve) Rokusek all of Oakland; nine grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren with one on the way; brother, Norman Loseke of Columbus; brother- and sisters-in-law, Glenville (Valera) Moeller, Joyce Moeller all of Scribner; many nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Monday, May 19, 2014, at 10:30 am, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland.

VISITATION: Sunday from 4-8 pm with family receiving friends at Pelan Funeral Home. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour prior to services.

Lois Mae (Edwards) Owen of Fairbury, NE formerly of Tekamah, NE


LOIS MAE (EDWARDS) OWEN, of Fairbury, Nebraska, formerly of Tekamah, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at Gardenside Care Center in Fairbury, at the age of 83 years, just 10 days shy of her 84th birthday.

Lois was born May 23, 1930, in DeKalb County, Missouri, to Eldon and Laura Mae (Stanton) Edwards. Growing up near Maysville, Missouri, she graduated for Maysville High School in 1947. Following high school, she attended Central Business College in Kansas City, Missouri. She then returned to Maysville, where she worked at the Robinson and Miller Law office. She also worked at the telephone company and later the ASC office.

On August 7, 1954, Lois was united in marriage to John Kenneth “Kenny” Owen.  To this union three children were born. They ran a dairy farm until 1966, when they moved to Tekamah to open a Western Auto hardware store, which they owned and operated for over twenty-five years.

While living in Tekamah, she was a member of the United Methodist Church in which she was very active in the women’s circles. She also worked part time at the Tekamah Public Library and the Burt County Museum.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, parents; sister, Marjorie; and an infant brother.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Les and Jo of Laurel, NE, John Paul and Lynn of Naperville, IL; daughter and son-in-law, Deb and Tim McAllister of Fairbury, NE; four grandchildren, Brad (Racheal) Owen, Cristy McAllister (Aaron Fryzek) all of Lincoln, NE, Kylie Owen of Williamston, SC, Jake (Katie) McAllister of Elkhorn, NE; three great grandchildren, Emma and Elizabeth Owen and Owen McAllister; sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty (Clayton) Huber, Carolyn (Paul) Eggleston, Bill Buchanan; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob (Rita) Edwards, John Edwards and Harvey (Janice) Edwards.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: May 23, 2014, 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Tekamah.

Arlene A. Weatherly, 87 of Tekamah, NE


ARLENE A. WEATHERLY, 87 years, of Tekamah, Nebraska, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair, Nebraska.

Arlene was born March 25, 1927, to Albert and Violet (Wallin) Hammer in Bradish, Nebraska. She grew up on a farm in the Albion, Nebraska, area and graduated from Albion High School in 1944.

She met her future husband, Mack Weatherly, when he was working on her parent¹s farm. It was her interest in sports that brought them together and their first date was to a football game. October 12, 1946, they eloped to Marysville, Kansas, and got married. Three daughters, Karen, Cindi and Tracy were born to this union.

Arlene was a very active member of the community.  She belonged to Tekamah United Methodist Church, was a member of the Burt County Museum Board, Tekamah Book Club, Thursday Social Extension Club and P.E.O. Chapter DC. She held several jobs during her life including Blair Wedding World, Wolfe’s Jewelry, Dick’s Western Store and driving a school bus. One of Arlene’s favorite things to do was attending Nebraska football games, after which Mack and her loved entertaining family and friends. She also loved to knit, sew and spend time at her daughter’s greenhouse. She looked forward to her dinner outings with “the girls”. Arlene was very devoted to her family and will be remembered for the wonderful cooking the family enjoyed.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and husband.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Karen (Jim) Elliott of Craig, NE and Houston, TX, Cindi (Tom) Dahl of Papillion, NE, Tracy Weatherly of Omaha, NE; three grandsons, Scott (Jennifer) Elliott, Rusty (Arian) Elliott, Chris (Allison) Dahl; five great-grandchildren; sister, Vivian (Don) Thomas of Tekamah; special friend, Gennie Elliott; and a host of other family and friends. When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.

Arlene B. Hagen, 71 of Oakland, NE


ARLENE B. HAGEN was born on November 14, 1942, at Naeve Hospital in Albert Lea, Minnesota, the daughter of Arthur and Rozella (Hunnicutt) Pedersen. She passed away, Monday May 12, 2014, at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 71.

Arlene’s family lived between Alden and Freeborn, Minnesota on the family farm.  Arlene attended country school and later Freeborn High School in Freeborn graduating with the class of 1960.

On October 18, 1960, she was united in marriage to Ordean C. “Bob” Hagen in Alden, Minnesota.  Together they had many adventures and lived in many places until settling in Oakland, NE, in 1973.  Arlene held many jobs but her most well-known was the owner of Goldie’s Retreat in Oakland.  People still called her Goldie throughout the years and everyone knew who they were talking about.  She made many life-long friends through that period of her life.

Arlene enjoyed gardening, golf, her music; for which she won several distinctive awards for playing the trumpet, playing cards and spending time with her family.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, and grandson Christopher Hagen in 1991.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Bob of Oakland; three children, Robert and his wife Chey of Fremont, NE, Ritchie of Ombersley, Worcester, England and Ranae and significant other Jeff Going of Oakland, NE; five grandchildren, Elizabeth (Matt) Allen of Lowerwick, Worcester, England, Heather Hagen of Leigh, Worcester, England, and Thomas Hagen of Ombersely, Worcester, England, Alisha Kuhlman of Omaha, NE and Matthew Kuhlman of Oakland, NE and step grandson Danny Subbert of Wahoo, NE; great grandchildren Jack and Emily Allen of Lowerwick, Worcester, England and step great grandchildren Ariel and Danny Subbert Jr of Wahoo, NE; brother, Raymond (Carol) Pedersen of Albert Lea, MN, Stanley (Sheila) Pedersen of Sauk Rapids, MN, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-laws, Neoma (Ken) Johansen of Janesville, MN, Dennis Dinse of Owatonna, MN, Buzz (Bobbi) Hagen of Los Angeles, CA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Saturday, May 17, 2014, at 10:00 am, at the First United Methodist Church in Oakland.

Carl Rodney Larson, 76 of Emerson, NE


Carl Rodney Larson 76, of Emerson, NE passed away Saturday, May 10, 2014 surrounded by his family at his home in Emerson, NE. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 15, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson, NE; Pastor Gretchen Ritola will be officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday May 14, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, with a Prayer service starting at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Emerson. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Emerson, NE.

Rodney was born on April 7, 1938, in Wakefield, NE the eldest of six children and only son born to Carl August Bertil Larson and Opal H. (Witt) Larson. He was baptized on June 19, 1938 and confirmed in faith on June 27, 1952 at the Mission Covenant Church in Wakefield, NE.

Rodney attended Pleasant Hill Country School, District #66 and graduated for Emerson High School in 1955, where he was involved in football, Vo Ag, FFA and Cornhusker Boys State. In 1956, he earned an Accountancy degree at Commercial Extension School of Commerce in Omaha, NE. Between 1956 and 1961, Rodney worked at several places in Omaha including: Ford Moving and Storage, selling Wear-Ever pots and pans, driving a taxi and Burlington Northern Railroad Company.
Rod and Elaine Brinkman were united in marriage on August 23, 1959 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson, NE. They resided in Omaha, NE until March of 1961 before moving to their farm southwest of Emerson. Rodney and Elaine retired in 2008, after 47 years of raising cattle, hogs and grain.

He was a member of the Emerson-Hubbard School Board, Farmers Coop Board of Directors, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Council, the Dixon County ASC Committee and the Emerson Township Board. Rodney was also a member of the Country Music Association of South Sioux City and the Eagles Aerie #2492 of South Sioux City, NE.

Rodney loved to fish, fly his airplane, and strum his guitar while singing and dancing at jam sessions. He attended many of his grandchildren’s activities.

He is survived by his wife; Elaine, children and their spouses; Barb and Larry Nitz of Lincoln, NE, Steve and Marcie Larson of Columbus, NE, grandchildren; Garrett, Jason and Andy Nitz of Lincoln, NE, Alex and Jessica Larson of Columbus, NE, sisters; Melba and Gene Lamb of Lawrence, KS, Bernita and Monte Johnson of Puyallup, WA, Wanda Vespucci of Omaha, NE, Jenene and Dale Kumbier of Maxwell, IA, Janette Hassler of Clive, IA, brother-in-law; Ron and Carol Brinkman of Emerson, NE and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Rodney is preceded in death by his parents; Bertil and Opal Larson, parents-in-law; Henry and Frances Brinkman, brother in law; Mike Vespucci, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
