Ronald Clarence Gobel, 86 of Tekamah, NE


Ronald Clarence Gobel was born to Roy and Frances (Kollars) Gobel March 31st, 1928 on a homestead farm outside of Crofton, Nebraska where he was the 3rd youngest of 9 children. He passed away April 20th, 2014 at the Golden Living Center in Tekamah, Nebraska, after a brief illness.

Crofton High School. As a child, Ronald enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping.  He helped on the family farm.  Later in life he enjoyed gardening, working with wood, and spending time with his family.

Ronald enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1945 where he served for two years.

On March 31st, 1948 he married Verona Eaton in Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, California.  Soon after they were married, they returned to Crofton.  He was employed at the Crofton Implement as a mechanic, and the Crofton Creamery as a Plantman.  In 1956 they moved to Omaha, NE. where Ronald worked at the Sorenson Dairy and Sutton Siding. In 1977 He and Verona, along with the four remaining children at home moved to Tekamah where they started their business Gobel Siding.  Still climbing ladders at the age of 69, he retired in 1998.

He was a member of the VFW Bataan Post No. 3304 & the American Legion Lafrenz Post No. 15.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 49 years, Verona; daughter, Kathy; grandsons, Ronald and Nicholas; and brothers Renne, Alton, Sid, and Tim.

Survivors include his son Deane of Fordyce, NE, daughters, Nancy Schaeffer of Harvey, ND, Pam Langfeldt of Tekamah, Libby Bond of Beatrice, NE, Jane (Richard) Elske of Tekamah, Donna (Bob) Schnell of Lincoln, NE, Mary Jo Thomas of Lincoln, and son Jim (Shelli) Gobel of Tekamah; 30 Grandchildren; 62 Great Grandchildren; 5 Great Great Grandchildren; brothers Nile of Oregon, Leon (Gerri) Gobel of Crofton, Ned (Diane) Gobel of Crofton; and sister Audrey (Donald) Sutton of Omaha.

MEMORIAL MASS: Thursday, April 24, 2014, 10:30 am, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Tekamah.

MILITARY HONORS: VFW Bataan Post No. 3304, American Legion LaFrenz Post No. 15

Marvin L. Sundquist, 69 of Lyons, NE


MARVIN L. SUNDQUIST, 69 years, of Lyons, Nebraska, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014, in a motor vehicle accident south of Uehling, Nebraska.

Marvin was born May 24, 1944, in Oakland, Nebraska, to Otto S. and Anna J. (Oman) Sundquist.

Marvin graduated from Lyons High School in 1962 and studied agriculture at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves.

Marvin married Linda Skinner in 1970.  They had four children, Lauree Renee, Marvin Douglas, Christian Boyd and Michelle Nicole. Marvin was raised and lived on a farm southeast of Lyons.  After leaving the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, he returned home and maintained the family farm.  After retiring from farming, Marvin began working at Walmart.  Marvin loved being able to interact and socialize with people he knew and met while working at Walmart.

He was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in Lyons.

Family was very important to Marvin, especially his grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He also enjoyed playing cards, loved music, history and Nebraska sports.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Jim Lovercheck and nephew, Michael Kostin.

Survivors include his children, Lauree (Robert) Lenz of Battle Creek, NE, Marvin Douglas Sundquist of Fremont, NE, Christian Boyd Sundquist and Michelle (Kase) May all of Black Forest, CO; eleven grandchildren; one great grandchild; sisters, Marilyn (John) Kostin of Kalamazoo, MI, Evelyn Lovercheck of Ogallala, NE, Julene (Dave) Rasmussen of York, NE; brother, Ramon (Carol) Sundquist of Sioux City, IA; nieces and nephews.

Susan June (Slaughter) Thies, passed away peacefully Friday, April 18, 2014, in Lyons, Nebraska, with family at her side.  Susan was born June 3, 1947, in Lyons to

Levon and Mary Lee (Beck) Slaughter. She was the second of four siblings.

Susan grew up on the family farm in Rosalie, Nebraska.  She was baptized and confirmed in the Rosalie United Methodist Church and attended Parks School (District 22) and Rosalie High School.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed being with her family especially spending time with her three grandchildren. Sue enjoyed participating in sports, outdoor activities and attending the sporting events of her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Levon; and a brother-in-law, Leo Olson.

She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Donald “Don” Thies of Lyons; mother, Mary Lee Slaughter of Lyons; siblings; Jacquiline Olson of Lyons, Tim (Vicky) Slaughter of Decatur, NE, Judi (Terry) Murtaugh of South Sioux City, NE; two children, Troy (Tami) Wood of Central City, NE, Jarrod (Lana) Wood of Lincoln, NE; three grandchildren, Taylor, A.J. and Alyssa; nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews; special friends, Ester and Roger Adams.
