Betty J. Walker, 91 years, of Tekamah, Nebraska, passed away Monday, April 7, 2014 at the Golden Living Center in Tekamah.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Saturday. April 12th, 2014 at 2:00 pm, at the First Baptist Church in Tekamah.

VISITATION: Friday 5 – 8 pm with family receiving friends from 5-7 pm, at Pelan Funeral Home in Tekamah. Visitation will also be held at the church Saturday one hour prior to service.

Dorothy Huddle, 87 of Emerson, NE


Dorothy Huddle, 87, died on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Bellevue Medical Center in Bellevue, NE. Memorial graveside services will be held Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery in Emerson, NE; Pastor Gretchen Ritola will be officiating.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family in care of Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home, 312 McCabe St. Pender NE 68047. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Emerson, NE.

Dorothy was born December 21, 1926 to Otto and Harriet Lieber in Sioux City, IA.  On December 13, 1963, Dorothy was united in marriage to Clyde A. Huddle.  To this union seven children were born.

She is survived by her seven children and three step-children and spouses:  Nancy (Delbert) Grosse of Council Bluffs, IA, Betty Cade of Council Bluffs, IA, Karen (Karl) Keck of Omaha, NE, Larry (Kay) Cooper of Millard, NE, Gerry Cooper of Bellevue, NE, Donna Carmichael of Omaha, NE, David Cooper – Huddle of Omaha, NE, Jean Goldtry of North Platte, NE, James Cooper of North Platte, NE and Steven (Bernie) Huddle of Lehigh Acres, FL; twenty-eight grandchildren, forty six great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by five brothers and a sister:  Otto Lieber, Jr. of Omaha, NE, Arnold (Faye) Lieber of Mesa, AZ, Walter (Vivian) Lieber of Mesa, AZ, Helen Levine of Denver, CO, Darrell (Linda) Lieber of Millard, NE, Ray (Lynne) Lieber of Council Bluffs, IA and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, spouse, two sons-in-law, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

 

Lela Mae Silver Swanson, 84 of Oakland, NE


Lela Mae Silver Swanson was born January 30, 1930 in Blair, Nebraska at the home of James C. and Hilda Marie (Doshe) Wallace.  She passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at Oakland Heights, in Oakland, Nebraska, at the age of 84.

While young, her family moved to a farm near Tekamah, Nebraska and then to Bertha, Nebraska, where she attended grade school.  In 1947, she graduated from Oakland Public High School.

On December 14, 1947, Lela married Richard Silver.  They had one daughter, Crystal Kay “Alix”.

Lela worked as a waitress in Oakland Cafés and as a dental assistant for Dr. Scheffel for several years.  In 1972, she bought her own café, Lea’s, which she ran for 20 years.

Lela became an EMT member of the Oakland Rescue Squad and was very proud to serve on this team for several years.

Her husband of 47 years, Dick Silver, died on August 4, 1994.

Lela Married Carl “Junior” Swanson of Lyons, Nebraska on June 27, 1998.  Carl passed away August 8, 2004.  Lela then moved back to her home town of Oakland on September 1, 2004.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands; brother, James Wallace; and sister, Lil Reinert.

Lela is survived by her daughter, Alix Jorden, of Oakland; grandson, Greg (Manuela) Millard of Tomah, WI; great grandsons, Kevin and Derek; sister, Jenny Hamilton of Walnut, IA; sister-in-law, Dorothy Wallace of Oakland; and several nieces and nephews.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Saturday, April 12, 2014, 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Oakland.

Edith (Lyght) Rich, 95 of Lyons, NE


Edith Nancy Rich was born September 25, 1918 to Charles Edward and Jessie (Blue) Lyght on a farm near Decatur, Nebraska. She passed away March 29, 2014, at Legacy Garden Rehabilitation and Living Center in Pender, Nebraska, at the age of 95 years.

She graduated from Decatur High School, valedictorian of her class in 1935. She took a business course from Commercial Extension of Omaha, Nebraska, and later received two diplomas from the International Bible Institute of St. Louis, Missouri.

Edith married Elmer Rich in December of 1939, and became a farmer’s wife. God blessed this union with five children: Mina, Margaret, Shirley, and twins Lorena and LeRoy.

They left farming and moved to South Sioux City, Nebraska, then to Lyons because of the Missouri River flood of 1952. The family grew up in Lyons and they were active in the Assembly of God Church.

Edith worked in the food industry and army ammunition plant during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. She was a hard worker and thought a job worth doing was a job worth doing well.

The greatest thing about our mother was her relationship with God and her love for other people. She excelled as a mother, leaning on the Lord, her maker, for direction throughout life’s trials. She loved music and enjoyed singing and playing old hymns. One favorite was “I’ll Meet You in the Morning”.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents; her oldest daughter, Mina Farber; three sisters, Eva Davis, Doris Martin and Lillian Lyght; and three grandchildren.

Survivors include her four children, Margaret (Loyd) Orr of Bellevue, NE, Shirley Jacobsen of Clever, MO, Lorena Halte of Griffin, GA, LeRoy (Sue) Rich of Bonner Springs, KS; 10 grandchildren, Denise, Mike, Debbie, Lonnie, David, John, Shane, Brandon, Mindy and Mary; great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

Robert W. Morris, 77, of Wayne, Nebraska died on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, Nebraska. Funeral services for Bob will be held on Friday, April 4, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne; Pastor Sylvia Karlsson will be officiating. A visitation with the family present will be held on Thursday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne. Burial with military honors will be in the Greenwood Cemetery of Wayne. Memorials may be directed to Bob’s family for later designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home of Wakefield.

Bob was born on June 7, 1936 in Carroll, NE, the son of John and Sophia (Stahl) Morris. He was baptized and confirmed at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Wayne. In 1954, Bob graduated from Wayne High School. After graduation he joined the United States Air Force; working as a crypto operator while serving in Alaska and Maryland from 1954 until 1958. After his service, Bob returned to Wayne and was united in marriage to Betty Longe on May 29, 1959 at Redeemer Lutheran Church. To this union two children were born: Jere and Jeanne. For a short time, he worked as a milk hauler from farm places to the dairy. He later worked for Wayne State College as a heating and cooling engineer in the campus energy plant. Bob retired in 2008. One of the greatest gifts Bob gave his family was being grandpa to Jeremy. Bob was always there for Jeremy and his parents. A majority of Bob’s free time was spent attending area sporting events, particularly Legion baseball. Bob was an avid reader of newspapers and books. He enjoyed having coffee with his friends, and loved the time spent with the children his wife Betty cared for in their home.

Bob is survived by his wife Betty of Wayne, NE, son Jere Morris of Omaha, NE, daughter Jeanne (John) Vezner of Papillion, NE, a grandson Jeremy Vezner, sisters Maxine Trautman of Longmont, CO, Arline Lurz of Beemer, NE, Jannabelle (Lynn) Gamble of Wayne, NE a brother Dennis (Kaye) Morris of Wayne, NE and a brother-in-law Glenn “Ole” (Alice) Longe of Whittier, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Sophia, in-laws Bill and Eva (Flynn) Longe, and brothers-in-law Don Longe, Garry Trautman and Lawrence Lurz.

Lyle Charles Abendroth, 84 of Bancroft


Lyle Charles Abendroth, 84, of Bancroft, Nebraska died on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Legacy Gardens Living Center in Pender, Nebraska. Funeral services for Lyle will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bancroft; Pastor Phillip Hale will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Bancroft, with the family present from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in the Bancroft Cemetery. Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home of Bancroft is in charge of the arrangements.

Lyle was born on November 23, 1929 in Bancroft, NE, the son of Martin and Emma (Tessmer) Abendroth. He graduated from Bancroft High School in 1947 and continued to farm with his father in Bancroft. After being drafted into the United States Marine Corps, he served as a Sgt. At camp Pendleton in San Diego, CA from 1951 until 1953. After returning home he continued to farm. On September 30, 1956, he was united in marriage to Marlene Fendrick in Thurston, NE. Lyle farmed and raised hogs until his retirement in 1996.

Lyle was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bancroft, where he also served as an elder and participated in the church choir. His cherished hobbies included playing the accordion, fishing, gardening, raising German Shepherds, attending auctions and passing his wisdom to his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marlene of Bancroft, NE, children David Abendroth of Bancroft, NE, Dan (Marcia) Abendroth of Omaha, NE, Renee (Brian) Weborg of Pender, NE, Amy (Ron) Kellogg of Utica, NE and Sandy (Craig) Sisson of Omaha, NE; eleven grandchildren, two great grandchildren; and family friends Heath (Teri) Cornett and family of Blair, NE.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents Martin and Emma and a brother Lawrence Abendroth.
