Robert C. “Bob” Busby, 87, of Wakefield, NE


Robert C. “Bob” Busby, 87, of Wakefield, Nebraska died on June 7, 2013 in Denver, Colorado.

A family graveside service was held on Monday, November 18, 2013 at the Wakefield Cemetery. Bob was born on March 23, 1926 in Wakefield, NE, the son of Clifford and Kathryn busby. He graduated from Wakefield High School in 1944 and married Dorothy Sundell in 1948. He had two sons: Michael and Kirk.

Bob served in the U.S. Air Corp in WW II as a belly gunner on a B-24. After his discharge in 1944, he attended the University of Nebraska, where he received a BS and Master’s Degree in geology. He began his career as a petroleum geologist in 1951 with Conoco and retired as an Independent Geologist. His lifelong love of geology never faded.

He married Angela Kline in 1990, who had three children: Richard, Kim and Jonathan. In retirement, Bob and Annie returned to Wakefield.

Bob enjoyed community participation, fishing, golf, skiing, sporting events and travel. He shared the same fun-loving gleam in his eye as his father and brother. Bob lived his life fully.

He is survived by his children Michael Busby and wife Emmalu of Chicken, AK; Kirk Busby and wife LaJuan of Pines, CO; Richard Kline of Omaha; Kim Kline and wife Deb of Papillion; Jonathan Kline and wife Joni of Omaha, NE and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Annie; and his brother, Jack.

Edna Mae Frey, 92, of Thurston, Nebraska died on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at her son’s home in Texas. Funeral services for Edna Mae will be held on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Emerson; Pastor Gretchen Ritola will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Monday from 3:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Pender. The family will be present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. Burial will be in the Rosehill Cemetery of Pender. Memorials are suggested to the WELCA, St. Luke’s Lutheran Church and the Pender Senior Citizens Center.

Edna Mae was born on May 27, 1921 in Rural Pender, Nebraska, the daughter of William and Clara (Schopke) Krusemark. She attended country school near Pender. Edna Mae was baptized and confirmed at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender. On January 1, 1941, she was united in marriage to Ervin Frey. The couple made their home on a farm East of Thurston, until retiring and moving into town. To this union four children were born Beulah Mae, Richard, Beverly and Robert. After raising her four children, she worked at IBP Packing Plant for the next 25 years. She was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Emerson where she was active in the Alter Guild. She was also involved with the Pender Senior Citizens Center, and belonged to several social and card clubs throughout the years. She enjoyed the annual Watermelon Days Celebration and Easter Egg Hunts held in Thurston with the involvement of the Better Homes Club sponsoring a bake sale and games. Her hobbies included baking, sewing and square dancing.

Edna Mae is survived by her children; Beulah Mae (Art) Greve of Wayne, NE; Robert (Judy) Frey of Hideaway, TX and Beverly (Randy) Farmer of Grove, OK. She is also survived by a daughter-in-law Anita Frey of Wichita, KS, 15 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren, her siblings William (Sharlene) Krusemark; Mila Jean (Arnie) Samuelson. She is also survived by sister-in-laws Eunice Krusemark, Paulina Krusemark and Mary Lou Krusemark and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ervin; son Richard Frey; brothers Willis, Edward and LeRoy Krusemark and sisters Wilma Jorgensen and Clairabelle Krusemark.

CARL LLOYD PERSSONwas born December 4, 1926, on a farm south of Oakland, Nebraska to Andrew and Minnie (Anderson) Persson.  He passed away Friday, November 15, 2013, at Oakland Heights Nursing Home in Oakland, at the age of 86 years.

Lloyd, a life-long resident of Oakland, graduated from Oakland High School in 1944.

Lloyd entered the U.S. Army in 1950 and served in Occupational Forces in Austria in 1952.

On April 10, 1959, Lloyd married Eunice Moseman in Oakland, where they made their home. They are the parents of three children, Carl, Joanie and Jim.

Lloyd was employed at the Oakland Post Office for 35 years, when he retired in 1989. He also worked at Nelson Ford garage and helped Delwin Swanson with seasonal farm work for 30 years.

Lloyd was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland.

A man of friendly nature and quick puns, he regarded everyone he met on main street as a friend. In spite of poor vision, he enjoyed extending his hand while asking “Is that you?”

Lloyd’s passion was model railroading. He and Eunice hosted open houses for the public to come and see his train layout.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Howard and Don and sister, Marian Carson.

Survivors include his wife, Eunice of Oakland; son, Carl of Minneapolis, MN; daughter, Joanie (Stephen) Johnson of Minneapolis; son, Jim (Michelle) of Hopkinton, MA; five grandchildren, Ashley, Andrew and Alex Persson, Emmie and Alex Johnson.

VIOLA “TOOTS” SMALL, 94 years, of Onawa, Iowa, formerly of Decatur, Nebraska, passed away Wednesday, November 6, 2013, at the Elmwood Care Center in Onawa.

Viola (Lunz) Small was born February 7, 1919, in Thawville, Illinois, to August and Emma (Fuoss) Lunz. She entered into rest surrounded by her family Wednesday, November 13, 2013, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa, Iowa, at the age of 94 years.

Viola was working as a nurse aide on the pediatric floor of the Lutheran hospital in Sioux City, Iowa, when she was introduced to Walter W. Small Jr. by his sister, Helen. They were married August 14, 1955, in Martinsburg, Nebraska, and made their home on a farm near Decatur.  Viola raised Walter’s two young boys and helped on the farm beside her husband until they retired.

In their later years, they enjoyed going to Florida for the winter.  Viola loved to fish and often told her family she was a better fisherman than her husband. She loved her garden and taking long walks.

Viola was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Decatur and served as president of the Ladies Aid for many years.

She was proceeded in death by her parents; brothers, George, Chester, Will, Lee, and Cliff; sisters, Irene and Margaret; stepson, John Small.

Viola is survived by her husband of 58 years Walter W. Small Jr. of Onawa, sister, Dorothy Strong of Bronson, IA, four sisters-in-law, Helen Gatewood of South Sioux City, NE, Jane Lunz of Newcastle, NE, Bernice Lunz of Ponca, NE, Millie Lunz of Amarillo, TX ,  a stepson and two daughters-in-laws, Dan and Konnie Small of Decatur, NE, June Small of Sioux City, IA: 4 grandchildren;  6 step grandchildren;  19 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
