Edward L. campbell, 68, of Sioux City, formerly of Walthill


Edward L. Campbell, 68, of Sioux City, Iowa, formerly of Walthill, Nebraska died on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at his home in Sioux City. Graveside services for Ed will be held on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. at the Evergreen Cemetery in Walthill. The visitation will begin on Monday afternoon at 4:00 P.M. at his daughter’s home at 301 Mathewson in Walthill, and will continue until the time of the service. Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home of Walthill is in charge of the arrangements.

Edward was born on April 29, 1945 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Lowell and Bernice (Parks) Campbell. He was raised in Walthill and graduated from Walthill High School. He went to work for his father at Campbell manufacturing and became president of the company after his father’s retirement. In his younger years, Ed enjoyed muscle cars and hunting. Later he had a true passion for fishing. Ed was involved in Alcoholics Anonymous for 38 years, serving on the board of directors at the fellowship club on 14th St. in Sioux City. Most of all he loved his family, cherishing the time he could spend with his grandchildren.

Ed is survived by his son Britt Campbell and special friend Shari Kunert of Omaha, NE, daughters Heather Campbell of Walthill, NE and Megan Zimmerman of Sioux Falls, SD. He is also survived by his mother Bernice of Lyons, NE a sister Kathie (Dave) Kraus of Omaha, NE and grandchildren: Aisha, Ethan, Arielle, Robert and Ava.

He was preceded in death by his father Lowell.

Marie I. Tipton, 62, of Walthill, Nebraska died on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at her home near Walthill. Funeral services for Marie will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Walthill; Pastor Steven Breazier will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the church with the family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Walthill.

E. Lorraine Glissman, 94, of Lyons


E. LORRAINE GLISSMAN, 94 years, of Lyons, passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at Legacy Garden Rehabilitation and Living Center in Pender.

 

Lorraine was born to Albert and Gail (Merry) Carper, September 14, 1918, on the family farm south of Emerson, Nebraska. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Pender.  Lorraine graduated from Emerson High School in 1936.

 

On November 25, 1936, Lorraine and Floyd Glissman were united in marriage in Sioux City, Iowa.  They began farming one mile north of Pender, moving to a farm south of Pender the following year. In 1945, they moved to a farm near Rosalie, where they farmed until their retirement and move to Lyons in 1982.

 

Lorraine was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Lyons.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Floyd (October 1, 2006); sister and brother-in-law, Geraldine and Edward McQuistan; brother- and sister-in-law, Delmer and Helen Glissman.

 

Survivors include her nieces and nephews.

Harold Anderson Jr., 67


HAROLD LEROY “HARRY” ANDERSON JR., 67 years of Craig, Nebraska, passed away Thursday, August 15, 2013, at A. J. Merrick Manor in Fremont, Nebraska.  Harry was born June 5, 1946, in Bancroft, Nebraska, to Harold and Lavera (Grafe) Anderson.  He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bancroft, Nebraska. Harry attended school in the Lyons and Bancroft areas. He never married, but he truly enjoyed spending time with his brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews as much as possible. Family was very important to him. Harry also enjoyed spending time with special friends, Gary and Janet Anderson.

Harry worked for Bernie Paden, Paden Construction for 15 years. He then opened Anderson Auto Repair on Craig’s main street, which he operated for 10 years. He then was a mechanic for Sterling Construction in Rock Springs, Wyoming. There he worked for his brother-in-law, Chuck Delp for 10 years. Harry decided to return to Nebraska and worked for Bernie Paden at Holiday Lodge for 15 years until he recently retired.

Harry enjoyed fishing and camping, traveling, fixing and refurbishing old cars, overhauling engines, electrical work, etc. He was a jack-of-all-trade and could do anything was set in front of him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Layton and Jim; sisters, Wanda Puffer and Jane Anderson; Aunt Laverne Molvig; niece, Michelle Anderson.

Jean Marie Bray, 81


Jean Marie Bray, 81, of Bancroft, Nebraska died on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Per Jean’s wish, private services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church and the Bancroft Senior Center.

Jean was born on December 24, 1931 in Creighton, Nebraska, the daughter of Ralph and Minnie (Whaley) Peterson. She graduated from Lyons High School in 1949. On December 8, 1951, Jean was united in marriage to Elton Bray in West Point, Nebraska. To this union three children were born: Randall, Nathan and Gail. She loved working at the Bancroft Roller Skating Rink, the Bancroft Schools Kitchen and sold Avon for many years. Jean enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, baking, sewing, crocheting, square dancing and traveling. She was an active member of the Nebraska Rural Letter Carriers’ Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary and First Presbyterian Church in Bancroft. Jean served for many years on the Bancroft Township Election Board and was a volunteer for the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Jean is survived by her husband Elton of Bancroft, children and their spouses: Randall (Diana) Bray of Grandview, MO, Nathan (Lori) Bray of Pender, NE and Gail (Mark) McCorkindale of Wayne, NE; her grandchildren: Jasmine (Shaun) Brandt of Independence, MO, Kayla (Nathan) Gossage of Lee Summit, MO, Brandon Bray of Wayne, NE, Aubrey (Hunter) Samuels of Omaha, NE, Hannah, Sydney and Braydn McCorkindale of Wayne, NE; step grandchildren Heather Adams and Chris Abbey and two great grandchildren Quincy and Haylee Brandt. Jean M. Bray, 81, of Bancroft, Nebraska died on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

George Forrest Osberg


GEORGE FORREST OSBERG was born May 2, 1927, in Omaha Nebraska, to George F. and Minnie J. (Froid) Osberg. He passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, at the age of 86.

 

George graduated from Lyons High School in 1945 and having already enlisted in the United States Navy, entered active duty May 31, 1945, and was honorably discharged in 1946.  Following his military service, he attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

 

During his school days he was a member of the band and a trumpet trio that participated in numerous musical contests always receiving high ratings. In addition to this, he also played Taps at military funerals and other services.

 

On March 8, 1950, George and Betty Denton were joined in marriage in Lyons, Nebraska.  Although no children were born to the marriage, he frequently stated his two nephews were the sons he never had.

 

George was employed by the Burt County Bridge Crew as a drag-line operator and then by Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, retiring after 30 years of service.

 

Following his retirement he accepted the substitute rural mail route, which he loved dearly, and was able to run for 18 years.

 

George loved cars but his passion was driving, it was his entertainment and his relaxation.

 

In recent years George chose to spend the winters in Idaho with his sister and family, where the winters are a little less serve.  The past nine years he enjoyed Thanksgiving and Christmas with family returning to Lyons in early March.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; his parents; and brother-in-law, Carrroll Shodeen.

 

Survivors include his sister, Delores Shodeen of Parma, ID; nephews, Ronald (Nancy) Shodeen of Parma, ID, and James (Yong) Shodeen of Boise, ID.

Robert Lee “Bob” Smith


ROBERT LEE “BOB” SMITH

1927-2013

86 years, of Lyons, Nebraska, passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at Oakland Heights in Oakland, Nebraska, following a lengthy illness.

 

Smith Robert L.He leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Mae (Elming) Smith of Lyons; sons and daughter, Jim (Jennifer), Margaret (friend, Vel), Terry, all of Lincoln, NE, Mike (Laura) of David City, NE; son-in-law, Dennis Kempcke of Lincoln; sister, Densmer McIntyre of Lyons; brother, Leonard (Judy) Smith of Wisconsin; thirteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

 

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Marsha Lee Kempcke; parents and parents-in-law, brothers-in-law, Robert Raabe, Bernard Elming, Ted McIntyre.

 

Born and raised in Lyons, the son of Leonard and Lona (Robertson) Smith, he was a lifelong resident.

 

After graduating from Lyons High School in 1944, he joined the US Navy for the duration of WWII.

 

On June 19, 1955, Bob and Dorothy Mae Elming were married in Lyons.

 

Bob worked for Armour Foods for a period before entering a partnership in the Food Market in Lyons. He was passionate about his business; relishing the friends he made and working with customers. Bob enjoyed talking to people and was always keeping busy. He later purchased the entire business, eventually owning three store locations, Lyons, Tekamah and Fremont.

 

Bob was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lyons. He was active in the community including the Lyons Community Club, Industrial Development Group, board member of First National Bank and Affiliated Foods Norfolk. Bob was a long-time member of the Masonic Lodge (attaining 32nddegree), American Legion and VFW.

 

Bob loved life and encouraged his family to “have fun every day”.
