Judith E. Anderson, 75, of Tekamah NE


Judith E. Anderson died January 16, 2016 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

Judith Eleanor (Bruce) Anderson was born to Alvin John “A. J.” and Eleanor M. (Farnam) Bruce in Tekamah, Nebraska on November 23, 1940. She was born, raised, and lived nearly her entire adult life in Tekamah. After graduating from Tekamah High School in 1958, she graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1962, with a BS in Education.

Judy was a kindergarten teacher in Sunnyvale, California from 1961-1962 and at the Havelock School in Lincoln, Nebraska 1962-1965.

Judy was united in marriage to Ralph M. Anderson, Jr. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tekamah on August 18, 1963.

Judy was a lifetime and faithful member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, where she served as work group co chairman for over 30 years and as secretary of the Lutheran Church Council. She served as President of PEO Chapter DC and the Tekamah Library Board. She was a long time volunteer of the American Cancer Society and long time member of the Tekamah Book Club. She was honored as an Aksarben Countess in 1961. Judy loved to read, play bridge, boat on the Missouri River, and spend time in Okoboji, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband Ralph M. “Mick” Anderson, Jr of Tekamah; son Michael Thomas Anderson and his wife Brenda of Las Vegas, Nevada; and daughter Amy Louise Wenstrom and her husband Shawn and children Julia Louise and Thomas John of Farmington, Minnesota.

The Memorial Service will be Tues., Jan. 19th at 11:00 a.m. at Emmanual Lutheran Church in Tekamah NE. Burial will be at a later date in the Tekamah Cemetery.

Viola Victoria Verena (Erickson) Enstrom was born February 12, 1917 to Walter and Anna (Bring) Erickson on a farm west of Oakland, Nebraska. She attended grade school at Rock School District #48, four miles outside of Oakland. Viola graduated from Oakland High School in 1934. She was baptized and a member of the West Side Methodist Church, where she played the organ for many years, and directed the choir and male chorus at different times. Viola was a member and officer in United Methodist Women.

On August 26, 1939, Viola was married to William “Bill” H. Enstrom at the West Side Methodist Church in rural Oakland. They farmed and were owners of the local Dairy Queen. They had three children – Maxine Kay, born in 1942, Charles William, born in 1944 and Roger Allen, born in 1951 – all in Oakland. Together they were youth sponsors and Sunday School teachers. Viola and Bill received the AK-SAR-BEN Good Neighbor Award in 1991.

She worked at Oakland Memorial Hospital as Nurse’s Aid for over ten years, served on Oakland Heights Board of Directors and Assisted with Sing-a-Long and Bible Study at Oakland Heights. Viola was awarded the State Volunteer of the Year for Nursing Homes in 1990. She was a volunteer up until her residence at the Nursing Home in November 2014.

Viola was an active member in Garden Club, Neighborhood Circle, East Oaks, Golden Oaks and Hospital Auxiliary. She was a 50 year member of Order of Eastern Star and recipient of “Imhoff Award”. Viola was an original member of the Ring Quilters (RQ) Club. This group was formed when they were young girls and were taught quilting by Pastor Stromberg’s wife, Mabel, at West Side Methodist Church. This group was very close through their lives. Viola was the last living member.

Viola’s life centered around her family, faith and community. She enjoyed doing things for others before herself. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews meant so much to her. If you asked her when any of their birthdays were, she would know. When she had free time, she enjoyed doing puzzles, playing games with family, friends, and neighbors. Her Swedish heritage was very important to her. This included family dinners with the traditional Swedish menu – lutefisk, ostakaka and rye bread.

After her husband died in 2000, Viola lived in an apartment before moving to the Oakland Heights Assisted Living. She attended over 800 exercise sessions at the Oakland Mercy Hospital from July 2001 to June 2012 to improve her cardiovascular health and was recognized for her stamina and perseverance. In 2008, the Oakland Chamber of Commerce presented Viola with the Good Neighbor Award.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; sisters, Myrtle (Marion) Quist, Gloria (Richard) Shalberg, and Leila Erickson; brothers-in-law, Leroy (Ruth) Enstrom, Elmon (Helen) Enstrom, Leland (Ethel) Enstrom; sister-in-law, LaMae (Bryon) Brainard.

She is survived by her daughter, Maxine (Norman) Kassmeier of Lincoln, NE; sons, Charles (Mary) Enstrom of Wichita, KS, Roger (Nancy) Enstrom of Fremont, NE; brother-in-law, Claire (Ardis) Enstrom of Gretna, NE; grandchildren, Tara (Mike) Nagel of Lincoln, Troy (Patty) Kassmeier of Lincoln, Tasa (Jake) Armknecht of Auburn, NE, Tammy Enstrom of Wichita, Anna Enstrom of Fremont, Lisa (Matt) Glathar of Lincoln, Rachel (fiancé, Dylan Howe) Enstrom of Minneapolis, MN; great grandchildren, Madysn and Reid Nagel of Lincoln, Abigayl, Samuel, Cathryn, Tessa Kassmeier of Lincoln, Logan, Rees, Lexi, Crew Armknecht of Auburn, Erica Enstrom and Chase LaPierre of Wichita, Lucy and William Glathar of Lincoln; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Nam Van Tran, 82, of Wakefield NE


Nam Van Tran, 82, of Wakefield, NE passed away at his home in Wakefield on December 22, 2015. A private family service was held on December 24th, 2015.

Nam was born on January 5th, 1933, in Bac Lieu Vietnam. He has lived in the Wakefield community for the past 35 years, arriving in Wakefield in 1979.

He was employed at the M.G. Waldbaum Company for 23 years. He married Anh Vu Tran November 19, 1980.

Surviving Nam is his wife, Anh. Daughters: Mai (Lonnie) Harder, Truc (Duong) Mach, Trang (Matt) Dagostino, Thao (Jose) Rangel and Thu Tran. One son, Tri (Whitney) Tran and eight grandchildren: Toan Nguyen, Vanessa McKain, Tiffany Mach, Dylon Harder, Kirk Rangel, Austin Brandt, Charli Beck and Penelope Tran.

Joseph E. Mitchell, 61, of Fremont NE


Joseph E. Mitchell was born to Calvin and Mary Lou (Dinkins) Mitchell February 13, 1954, in Winnebago, Nebraska. He passed away with his loved ones surrounding him on January 11, 2016.

As a child, Joe attended 6R District School, District 19, Tobin Country School, then transferred to Tekamah-Herman School where he graduated in 1972. Joe enlisted into the U.S. Navy immediately after graduating where he served his country from 1973 to 1984. He was a member of the Craig American Legion.

In August 1979, he married Mila Morales and they had four daughters and one son.

Joe was a fun-loving free spirit, with a mischievous, teasing personality. He loved being surrounded by his children and grandchildren, and cooking for all of them. He looked forward to hunting morel mushrooms with his friends and family every year and was also a huge Husker fan.

On January 28, 2006, Joe remarried to Marcia Elske in Tekamah, Nebraska. They lived out the rest of their lives in Fremont, Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his father, Calvin Mitchell in 1984; his brother, Jim Mitchell in 1989; and his wife, Marcia Mitchell in 2015.

Survivors include his mother, Mary Lou Johnson of Tekamah; his siblings, Art & Mary Mitchell of Tekamah, Kathy & Scott McGowen of Tuscan, Arizona, Linda & Ron Harold of Craig, NE, Carol Mitchell of Tekamah, and Don Mitchell of Craig; his children, Mandy & Tony Reynolds of Omaha, NE, Mike & Nicole Mitchell of Omaha, Ida Mitchell of Port St. Lucie, FL, Cherri & Brent Schmidt of Omaha, Brandy & Etienne Amion of Omaha, and Josh & Jennifer Johnson of Lincoln, NE; 6 nieces and nephews; 11 great nieces and nephews; 22 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild.

Visitation will be Wed., Jan. 13th from 5:00-7:00 at Pelan Funeral Services in Tekamah.

Alverta M. Voss, 90, of Fremont, NE, passed away Sunday, January 10, 2016, at Providence Place in Fremont.

Alverta was born February 25, 1925, in Hooper, NE, to Gustav and Olga (Peters) Tienken. She grew up on a farm southwest of Hooper and graduated from Scribner High School in 1942. Alverta married Elra Lantefield on February 2. 1947 in Hooper. They lived in Hooper till 1953. Elra passed away February 22, 1953. Alverta moved to Fremont and married Wallace Voss on October 14, 1962 in Hooper. In 1962, they moved to Arlington, NE. Wallace passed away April 9, 1988 and Alverta moved back to Fremont.

Alverta was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hooper. She was a member of the Smile Club and enjoyed spending time playing cards in various card clubs.

She is survived by her nephews, Roger (Judy) Von Seggern of Scribner, NE, and Stanley Von Seggern of Fremont; great nephews, Martin (Paula) Von Seggern of Scribner, Scott (Angie) Von Seggern of Fremont; great nieces, Becky (James) Lynn of Uehling, NE, Barbara Von Seggern of Scribner, and Tracie (Russ) Quinn of Herman, NE.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Elra Lantefield and Wallace Voss; sister Almira (Raymond) Von Seggern.

The funeral service will be 10:00 AM, Thursday, January 14, 2016, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hooper, NE. The Rev Joel Schroeder will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 5 PM until 8PM at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Burial will be at Hooper Cemetery in Hooper.

Leonard A. Gutzmann, 93, of Emerson, NE, passed away Sunday, January 10, 2016 at Careage Campus of Care in Wayne, NE. Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson; Pastor Gretchen Ritola will be officiating. The visitation will be Tuesday, January 12, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson with a Prayer and Masonic Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Leonard was born September 21, 1922 to William and Ruby (Rogers) Gutzmann in Hornick, IA. In 1944 he graduated from Emerson High School. Leonard married Donna Lou Jackson on June 3, 1950 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson, NE; to this union, four children were born. The couple farmed near Emerson until 1992. Leonard has been a long time member of the Masonic Lodge. He loved to travel, fish, and spend time with his family.

He is survived by his sons, Daniel Gutzmann of Emerson, NE, Joe (Diane) Guzmann of Emerson, NE; daughter, Diane Ruzicka of Emerson, NE; sisters, Violet Albrecht of Emerson, NE, Bonnie Daum of Hornick, IA; eight grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

Leonard is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Donna Lou; daughter, Patsy Lou; brothers, William, Leslie, and Lewis; son-in-law, Marvin Ruzicka, Jr.; and daughter-in-law, Johnene Gutzmann.
