Michael Leonard Sydow, age 68 of Stanton, died Friday December 11, 2015 at his home in Stanton. He was born November 21, 1947 at his parent’s home in Stanton County, Nebraska the son of Leonard and Esther (Roenfeldt) Sydow. He attended Stanton County Canfield Dist #35 near Stanton and graduated from Stanton High School in1966; Also a graduate of Auto Body program at Milford Technical School in Milford, Nebraska.

After graduation Mike worked at O.K. Tire in Bellevue for 8 years, he moved to Oakland and operated an AAMCO Service Station located in Lyons. He joined Agland COOP in Oakland as a mechanic and later a truck driver. He became a certified HAZMAT truck driver for the COOP until he retired in 2012. He moved to Stanton in January 2015.

Mike was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Stanton; former member of Salem Covenant Church rural Oakland; he served his community as a member of Oakland Volunteer Fire Department, serving for a time as Fire Chief; also a volunteer member of Oakland E.M.T squad. He enjoyed fixing cars, fishing, hunting, playing pool, playing golf and playing Atari.

Surviving are Mike’s 3 children Marcy and Richard Maxwell of Stanton; Kelly and Patrick Gorman of Glendale, AZ; Andrew Sydow of Hawally, Kuwait; 1 Step Daughter Jennifer and Jarrod Dahlgren of Oakland; 1 Grandson Clayton Ogden of Lincoln; 5 Siblings Rev. Larry and Susan Sydow of Roswell, NM; Jackie and Rev. Ken Severa of Cathedral City, CA; Jerry and Gloria Sydow of Garden Grove, CA; Garry and Grace Sydow of Whitelaw, WI; Cindy and Sam Fischer of Leigh; many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews; 2 Loyal Lifetime friends Darold “Babe” Mathews of Oakland and Bill Schwanabech of Schuyler.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, several aunts and uncles.

Janette I. Day, 81, of Fremont NE


Janette I. Day, 81 years, of Fremont, NE passed away Sunday, December 6, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Center in Scribner, NE.

She was born August 14, 1934 to Claude and Goldie (Sheets) Yowell in Herman, NE. She grew up in Herman and graduated from Herman High School. On February 20, 1955, Janette married Vernon R. Day at the Baptist Church in Herman. After marriage, the couple lived in Onawa, IA. In 1959, they moved to Fremont.

She loved to travel with her husband and take vacations. She also loved to take care of her family and grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons, Darwin Day of Fremont, NE, Douglas Day and wife Deborah of Fremont, NE, Darin Day and wife Katie of Omaha, NE; chosen daughter, Renae Norenberg and husband Fred of Fremont, NE; twin sister, Janice Kelly; grandchildren, Tyler Day, Delaney Day, Nicholas Norenberg, and Zachary Norenberg and wife Shelby.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon; son, Doyle Day; sister, Mary Ann Snow.

There will be a private family graveside service at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont, NE. There is no visitation.

Leona Mae Anderson, 93, of Oakland NE


Leona Mae Anderson of Oakland, NE entered the presence of her Lord and Shepherd, Jesus on Sunday, December 6, 2015 at the age of 93. She was born to Emil Axel and Edith Charlotte (Jepson) Wilson on their farm in Mead, NE. on August 26th, 1922. Leona was the fourth of five children, and was raised on the farm. She graduated from Mead High School in 1939. She attended Luther College in Wahoo and Kearney State Teachers College. She taught two years before marrying Sanford Anderson of Oakland onJune 24, 1944. They had four children; Sandra, Connie, Marcia and Mark.

For the majority of her life, she was a teacher while pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree from Midland College in Fremont, NE, then her Masters of Education Degree from the Univ. of Nebr. at Lincoln. In the year 2011, she was granted an Honorary Doctorate of Education Degree from Trinity Theological Seminary in Newburgh, IN. During her 33 years of teaching she was the first teacher in Nebraska to receive a Middle School Endorsement.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sanford; her sisters, Mildred Wilson and Violet (Robbins) Smith; brother, Gilbert Wilson.

Leona is survived by her children, Sandra Anderson of Oakland, Connie (Merrill) McClatchey of Manhattan, KS, Marcia Anderson of Oakland, Mark (Zelda) Anderson of Ottumwa, IA; grandchildren, Andrea (Craig) Cline of Riley, KS, Michael Anderson of Iowa City, IA, JinHee Anderson of Ottumwa, IA; great grandchildren, Caden, Delaney, Ethan & Logan Cline; her sister, Luetta Sandquist of Lincoln, NE; her sisters-in-law, Verna Wilson of Charleston, IL, Corallie Anderson of Fremont.

Darlene Olsen, 82, of West Point NE


Darlene Olsen, age 82, of West Point, Nebraska passed away on Sunday, December 6, 2015 at Premier Estates in West Point, NE. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 11, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church in West Point, NE.  Interment will follow the luncheon in the Wisner Cemetery.  Visitation will be on Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Minnick Funeral Home in West Point and will continue on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.  Minnick Funeral Home in West Point is in charge of arrangements.

Darlene F. (Woldt) Olsen was born December 31, 1932 at Wisner, NE to Herman and Elma (Field) Woldt. She was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church in Wisner, NE. On September 10, 1950, she was united in marriage to Donald Olsen at the Grace Lutheran Church in West Point, NE. Darlene had worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital, which later became St. Francis Memorial Hospital, prior to working at the Oakland Memorial Hospital. She then worked as the office nurse for Dr. Rodin, Dr. Hadley and Dr. Peterson in Oakland and later at the Dinklage Medical Clinic in West Point. Darlene took surgical technician training at Clarkson Hospital and worked in surgery at Oakland Memorial Hospital. She later helped at the Kuzelka-Minnick Funeral Home in West Point until her retirement.

Darlene was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in West Point, NE.

Shelly Russman, 52, of Wisner NE


Shelly Russman, age 52, of Wisner, Nebraska passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 5, 2015 in her home on December 5, 2015, after a valiant fight with colon cancer.  Funeral services for will be on Wednesday, December 9, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at the Christ Lutheran Church in Wisner, NE.  Interment will be in the Bancroft Cemetery following the luncheon in the church basement.  Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Minnick Funeral Home in Wisner and will continue on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.  Minnick Funeral Home in Wisner is in charge of arrangements.

Shelly Ranae (Pulfrey) Russman was born on October 15, 1963, in Britton, South Dakota, to Quinten and Elizabeth (Kenny) Pulfrey. Shelly grew up in the small town of Amherst, South Dakota, where she enjoyed attending school and dressing up her kittens in her baby doll clothing. She grew up with three siblings: two older sisters, Susan and Teresa, and a younger brother, Win.

On November 15, 1980 she married Mark Alan Russman. The couple had their first child, Tanner, and moved to Ellinwood, Kansas, where they resided for five years. Shelly then had a set of identical twin boys, Wyatt and Garrett. The couple moved back to Wisner, Nebraska, and in 1997, had their youngest child and only daughter, Keeley.

Shelly loved her family and was extremely proud of them. She enjoyed attending all her children’s and grandchildren’s activities, which included 4-H and numerous school activities. She spent countless hours in the barn helping her kids with their show cattle. She enjoyed caring for her pets, which included several chickens, dogs, and cats. Shelly also loved spending time making arts & crafts with her grandchildren, and she was constantly displaying their artwork on the refrigerator.

Shelly was a very dedicated mother, grandmother, wife, sister, sister-in-law, and mother-in-law. Family meant everything to Shelly. She fought a courageous battle, and she left behind many loving and lasting memories with everyone that she touched.

She is survived by her loving husband Mark; her children Tanner (Tami), Wyatt (Jill), Garrett, and Keeley; grandchildren Dylan, Jocelyn, Adelle, and Sawyer, all of Wisner; her sisters Susan and Teresa, and brother Win of South Dakota; her mother, Elizabeth Pulfrey, also of South Dakota; her mother-in-law, Carmen Russman, of Rosalie; and by a large, loving extended family.

Shelly was preceded in death by her father, Quinten Pulfrey; her father-in-law Dallas Russman; and an infant sister, Carrol Grace.

Lillian “Tiny” Doris Bacon, 87, of Lyons, NE


Lillian “Tiny” Doris Bacon was born on September 11, 1928 in Windom, Minnesota. Her parents were Sam and Lillian (Scheldorf) Martin. Tiny’s battle with dementia took her to Oakland Heights in Oakland, Nebraska where she passed away on Friday, December 4, 2015 at the age of 87 years, 2 months and 23 days.

Tiny came to Lyons with her sister Loretta in 1946, where she met George E. Bacon. She was united in marriage to George in South Sioux City, Nebraska, on July 3, 1948.

They made their home in Lyons. In 1959, they started a business “Bacon Sodding” and built a home, she loved, in Lyons around 1969. She worked for a few years at the telephone company in Lyons as a telephone operator. She enjoyed caring for her family, cooking, baking, canning and an occasional trip to the casino.

She was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in Lyons.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; daughter, Diane Fada; two sons, Kevin and Sam Bacon; two grandsons, George and Kevin Bacon; 4 brothers and sisters.

Tiny is survived by her two children: Valerie Bacon and her friend Carla Robinson of Homeland, California and Gary Bacon and his wife Kristi of Lyons; 4 grandchildren: Alan Bacon of Fremont, Cassie (Bacon) and her husband Ryan Rasmussen of Winterset, Iowa, Tiffany Fada of Auburn, Alabama, and Tyler Fada and his wife Nancy of Lyons; 6 great grandchildren: Blake Bacon, Hunter Bacon, Kennedy Bacon, Nate Bacon, Reiland Rasmussen and Cale Rasmussen; 1 sister; and many other relatives and friends.

Ann Gahan, 92 years, of Oakland, Nebraska, passed away on December 2, 2015 at Oakland Heights Nursing Home in Oakland.

Funeral Service will be Monday, December 7, 2015, 10:30 am at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Columbus.   Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 7 pm with family receiving friends and a prayer service will be at 7 pm all at Pelan Funeral Services Oakland. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour prior to service.   Burial will be in  Roselawn Cemetery in Columbus, Nebraska.   Memorials to the family for designation at a later time.

Ann was born on August 6, 1923 to Oscar and Lena (Schupbach) Blaser in Columbus, Nebraska. She was raised on a farm west of Columbus, and graduated from Kramer High School, in Columbus. After graduation, she worked at Paxton Gallager in Omaha, Nebraska.   On August 6, 1946, Ann married Robert Gahan. They started their life together in Fremont, Nebraska and California while Bob was pursuing his mortuary science degree. They lived in Lyons, Nebraska, then moved to Oakland, where they resided over 40 years. After Bob’s retirement in 1990, they moved to Columbus. In 2006 Ann moved back to Oakland. Together they raised nine children.   Ann was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Columbus, and attended First United Methodist Church while living in Oakland.  She enjoyed playing cards, dancing and golfing.
