Jimmy L. Tillman, 85 years, of Fremont, NE died Monday, November 30, 2015 at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, NE.

Jimmy was born July 26, 1930 in Hooper, NE to John and Gladys (Rodgers) Tillman. He grew up in Hooper and was a 1948 graduate of Hooper High School, where he played football and basketball. He then moved to Sidney, NE. Jimmy previously worked for the railroad, and operated a roller rink in Hawarden, Iowa and Slayton, MN. He later moved to Fremont, where he lived most of his life. He was a 44 year employee of Hormel’s, and owned and operated Tillman TV Repair Service in Fremont. He also worked for Fremont Housing Authority. Jimmy married Jeanine McDonald on April 24th at Grace Lutheran Church in Hooper.

He was a former member of Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont and member of the Hooper Volunteer Fire Department, for several years. He enjoyed sports, especially Husker Football. Jimmy enjoyed roller skating and entered many dance competitions with his wife.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanine; sons, Kelly and wife, Lou Tillman of Houston, TX and Michael and wife, Cheri Tillman of Las Vegas, NV; sister, Illa Stalp of West Point, NE; 2 grandchildren, Ashley and Sarah Tillman; and 7 adopted grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bill; and sisters, Jackie and Avis.

Funeral service will be 3:30 PM, Friday, December 4, 2015 at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. The Rev. J.W. Berry will officiate. Visitation on Friday 1 hour prior to services. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.

Larry J. Larson, age 80, of West Point, Nebraska, formerly of Oakland, passed away Friday, November 27, 2015 at his home in West Point.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 2, 2015, at 11 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Oakland, Nebraska with Rev. Joel Rathbun officiating.  Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery at a later date.  Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 5-7 p.m. with family receiving friends with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. to be officiated by Rev. Les Parmenter, all at Pelan Funeral Services in Oakland. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour prior to service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church Oakland and to the Oakland-Craig Public School Foundation.  Pelan Funeral Services in Oakland is in charge of arrangements.

Larry J Larson was born to Harold and Esther (Gallup) Larson October 9, 1935 in Oakland, Nebraska. He passed away on Friday, November 27, 2015 peacefully in his home in West Point, Nebraska. Larry was baptized at the Congregational Church in Uehling, Nebraska. Larry and his family lived in Uehling for five years then the family moved to Omaha where he attended Benson West Elementary and Benson High School. He was confirmed in St Paul’s Methodist Church in Benson.   In 1950 the family moved to Oakland where he graduated from Oakland High School in 1953. After high school he attended Midland Lutheran College where he graduated in May of 1957.

Larry married Ruth H (Hensel) on November 23, 1958 at Grace Lutheran Church in West Point. They started their life together in Fremont, Nebraska where Larry worked for George H. Hormel Company. In 1959 they moved to Oakland where he worked as General Manager for Holmquist Grain and Lumber until he retired in 2000. While living in Oakland, Larry and Ruth raised their family of four children.

Throughout Larry’s life, he was very active in many organizations and hobbies. Larry served in the US Army Reserve. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was elected on the Oakland School Board for 12 years. He was appointed to the Nebraska Grain and Feed Dealers Legislative committee for many years. He served as president of the Oakland Chamber of Commerce, member of the Oakland Jaycees and as a board member for the Oakland Golf Club for many years.

Larry’s passions were sports and fishing. While attending Midland Lutheran College he played football, basketball and was a member of the golf team. He played on the Hillside Dairy softball team. Larry continued his passion for the game of golf throughout his life starting at the age of 12 as a caddy for the Omaha Country Club. Throughout his years, he enjoyed watching, encouraging, and coaching his children and grandchildren in their involvement in sports and the arts.

Larry was preceded by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth of West Point, NE; children, Kevin (Brenda) Larson of West Point, Terry (Vivian) Larson of Lees Summit, MO, Patricia (Lee) Fellers of Red Oak, IA, Kathleen (Jerry) Lindstrom of Hiawatha, KS; 12 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; sister, Lila (Gary) Zimmerman of Omaha, NE.

Leonard G. Poppe, 93 of Scribner NE


Leonard G. Poppe, age 93, of Scribner, Nebraska passed away Sunday November 29, 2015 at Dunklau Gardens in Fremont.  Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at United Lutheran Church in Scribner. Leonard was born September 3, 1922 in rural Scribner to Carl and Clara ‘White’ Poppe. He attended District 36 School and received a special award for not being tardy or missing a day of school for eight years. He was a member of the Sunday school and church at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Cuming County Line. On September 8, 1935 he was confirmed by Rev. Wendt. Leonard farmed with his father until 1943. On June 29, 1943 he married Ardell Dahl in the home of her parents, Earl and Luella Dahl, by the Rev. Davis. They farmed south of Scribner until 1987 when they moved into Scribner.

Leonard was a member of United Lutheran Church in Scribner and was a past church council member for six years. He was also a member of the School Board at District 47 for ten years.

Richard S. Maslonka was born on January 19, 1965 to Charles and Myrna (Mitchell) Maslonka in Oakland, Nebraska. He passed away Saturday, November 28, 2015, at the Oakland Mercy Hospital in Oakland, at the age of 50 years.

Melva Maxine (Beck) Christensen passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at Oakland Heights, in Oakland, Nebraska, at the age of 95.

Melva was born on her family’s farm east of Rosalie, NE, on December 9, 1919, to Lee “Doc” and Pina (Barada) Beck. She was raised on the farm and she attended the local Parks Rural Grade School through the 10th grade, then graduated from Lyons High School in 1937.

Melva married Don Christensen on February 5, 1939 and lived on the Christensen family farm as a homemaker and helping with the farming operation. In retirement, Melva and Don moved to a home in Oakland; then, for the last few years of her life resided at Oakland Heights.

She enjoyed participating in many local organizations in the community holding offices in most of them and traveling to state, national, and international meetings. She was especially involved with the Home Extension Clubs serving as president of her local group, the Nebraska State Club, and Citizenship Chairperson for the National Extension Club. She was a life member of the Associated Country Women of the World. She was a Township Committee Woman and served on the election board for many years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church receiving a life membership pin from the Women’s Society for services in her church as a Sunday school teacher, church board member, and president of the women’s group. Melva was also the first women to serve on the Oakland City Council.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Pina Beck; her husband, Donald; daughter-in-law, Shirley Christensen; and multiple sisters and brothers-in-law.

Melva is survived by her two sons, Fred (Sandi) of Lyons, NE, Jim of Bellevue, NE; two grandsons, Graham of Omaha, NE, Max (Annie) of Lyons; two great granddaughters, Natalie and Avery; sisters; Mary Lee Slaughter, Eva Weeks; brother, Tom (Betty) Beck all of Lyons; brother-in-law, T.J. “Junior” Appleby; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Jane A. Frandsen age 84, of Fremont, formerly of the Uehling area
passed away Sunday November 22, 2015 at Dunklau Gardens in Fremont.

The funeral will be 10:30am Wednesday at the Uehling Auditorium in Uehling. The Rev. Mark Eldal will officiate. Burial will follow in the Elim Lutheran Cemetery in Swaburg. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3pm to 8pm with the family receiving friends from 6pm to 8pm at the Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel in Fremont. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Uehling Park or Uehling Auditorium.

Jane was born May 7, 1931 in Oakland, Nebraska to Arthur and Pearl ‘Mallette’ Von Essen. She was raised on the family farm southwest of Oakland. She graduated from Uehling High School in 1948 then attended the Commercial Extension School of Commerce in Omaha. After her schooling she worked for Mutual of Omaha then Hormel Foods in Fremont. She married Vernon Frandsen in 1953. The couple lived on a farm near Swaburg until 1963, then moved to a farm near Hooper and lived there for 2 years before returning to her family’s home place. Jane worked as a secretary for Logan View Schools from 1970 until 1991. The couple retired and moved into Fremont in 1991.

Jane was a member of the Uehling American Legion Auxiliary, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Uehling and belonged to an extension club. Jane and Vernon played in a card club with the same people for over 60 years. While in Fremont they also attended First Lutheran Church.

Harriet Meyer, 83, of Walthill, NE, passed away Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, IA. Harriet was born October 10, 1932 to Paul W. and Elsie (Riddiough) Andrew in Randolph, NE. She graduated from Randolph High School in 1950 and received a teaching degree from Wayne Teachers College in 1951. Harriet married Clayton Meyer in 1952, the couple had six children. Harriet was a member of the Light of the World Gospel Church and the Senior Center. She enjoyed playing cards, traveling, and reading. Harriet loved life, her family, and the Lord.

She is survived by her sons, Greg (Debbie) Meyer of Decatur, NE, Jeff Meyer of Granite Falls, WA, Clay Meyer (Viola Burkett) of Hastings, NE, Kip Meyer (Jenny Louis) of Elkhorn, NE; daughter Cristi (Tom) Baumert of Elkhorn, NE; sisters, Pauline Collier of Norfolk, NE, Judy Loofe of Wakefield, NE; brothers, Gilbert Andrew of Norfolk, NE, Don Andrew of Randolph, NE, 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
