Marie Vander Veen, 91, of Wakefield NE


Marie Vander Veen, 91, of Wakefield, NE died on Monday, October 5, 2015 at the Wakefield Health Care Center. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 10:30 a.m.
at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Wakefield; Pastor Kelly Johnston will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Wakefield, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Wakefield Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Bressler-Munderloh-Smith of Wakefield is in charge of the arrangements.

Marie was born on July 18, 1924 on the family farm near Running Water, SD, the daughter of Peter and Dora (Vander Lei) Dykstra. She attended country school near Running Water and helped her family with the farm. Marie worked at Luekens Bakery in Springfield, SD and Mitchell, SD. She was united in marriage to Pier Vander Veen in March 23, 1954 at the Reformed Church in Springfield, SD. The couple later moved to Nebraska settling in Wakefield. Pier died on April 5, 1980.

She enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers, and collecting stamps. She was a member of the church ladies aid and was well known for her pies, cinnamon rolls, and caramel bars. Most of all she loved the time she was able to spend with her family and attending their events.

Marie is survived by her six sons: Calvin (Kathy) Vander Veen of Wakefield, NE, Bob (Sue) Vander Veen of Wakefield, NE, Lynden Vander Veen of Lincoln, NE, Darrel Vander Veen, Dwight (Pam) Vander Veen and Brent (Val) Vander Veen all of Wakefield. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren and her sisters Jessie Boersma of Springfield, SD and Mabel Luedens of Sioux Falls, SD and brothers Jayson and Darwin Dykstra of Avon, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Pier, brothers: Andrew, Raymond and Donald and sisters: Annie Odens and Ruth Olivier.

John W. Shamburg, age 79, of Herman, Nebraska passed away October 4, 2015 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Community in Blair. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at 10 a.m. at The Herman Community Church in Herman. Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 6th from 6 to 8 p.m. at Campbell Aman Funeral Home in Blair. Campbell Aman Funeral Home in Blair is in charge of arrangements.

John W. Shamburg was born on June 23, 1936 in Tekamah, Nebraska to Waldo and Jessie (Skinner) Shamburg. As a young child he enjoyed traveling with his father as he worked all over the country. When he was six the family moved to a farm near Herman. He was very active showing sheep and cattle and showed at the state fair for over 50 years. He attended 4-H club Congress in 1954 in Chicago. He attended Herman High School and graduated with the class of 1955. After high school he worked shearing sheep in a three county area. In 1962 he was an IFYE (International Farm Youth Exchange) and was an exchange student in Peru. He was a partner in the family dairy farm. In 1976 he married Janet Clark in Enon Valley, Pennsylvania. He served as a 4-H leader for over 40 years. He enjoyed attending IFYE conferences throughout the United States. He also enjoyed history, especially local and family history, and visiting with people.

He is survived by son Dan Shamburg of Tekamah, daughter Sara Koelling and husband Shawn of Ord, brother Bill Shamburg of Herman, and 6 grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, and sister-in-law Alice Shamburg.

Constance “Connie” Denker, 78, of Emerson NE


Constance “Connie” Marlene (Pittenger) Denker, 78, of Emerson, Nebraska passed away Saturday, October 3, 2015 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, Nebraska. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson; with Pastor Gretchen Ritola officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with a prayer service starting at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Emerson. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Emerson.

Connie was born September 16, 1937 in Jackson, Nebraska to Edward C. and Violet C. (Johnson) Pittenger. She attended and graduated from Jackson High School in 1953. She continued her education earning a teaching certificate in 1956 from Wayne Teachers College. Connie taught country school in Dixon and Dakota County.

Connie was a member of the Good Neighbors Extension Club, she was a Sunday School Teacher and an LCW member and officer. Connie also served as the bookkeeper for the Emerson Rural Fire District. She enjoyed baking, especially apple pies, making jelly, collecting stamps, crocheting and reading.

Connie is survived by her sons, Fred Denker of Emerson, NE, David Jon Denker of Emerson, NE, Jim Denker (Jill Matousek) of Dakota Dunes, SD; daughters, Joanne (Todd) Von Seggern of Pender, NE, Jeanine (Todd) Hale of Atkinson, NE; sisters, Beverly Baker of Sioux City, IA, Evelyn Schimmel of Little Rock, AR; brothers, Ed Pittenger of Bondurant, IA, John Pittenger of Sioux City, IA; and 6 grandchildren.

Garlen Lee Tuma, 87, of Herman NE


Garlen Lee Tuma, of Herman, Nebraska, was born April 20, 1928, in Cotesfield, Nebraska, to John and Farra (Jacobs) Tuma. He passed away Saturday, October 3, 2015, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair, Nebraska, at the age of 87 years.

Garlen moved to Burt County in 1936. He joined the Army, and served in the Korean Occupation.

Garlen married Betty Jean McWilliams on October 11, 1947.

He worked at Red D Mix Concrete in Omaha until his retirement. He belonged to Legion Post #154 and VFW Post #2503. He also loved hunting, fishing and flying his own Piper J-3 Cub airplane.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; grandson, Jason Tuma.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Nancy Tuma of Blair, NE; 2 great-grandsons, Gavin and Cole Tuma of Omaha; nieces and nephews, other family and friends.

Private Immediate Family Services will be held at a later date.

Judith Ann (Thorson) Anderson, 79, of Pender, NE, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2015 at her home in Pender. Funeral services will be Monday, October 5, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender, NE; Pastor Miles Ruch is officiating. Judy was born October 6, 1935 to Edwin B. and Ruth M. (Olson) Thorson in Elk Point, SD. She attended and graduated from Elk Point High School. Judy married Billy Anderson in Elk Point on March 2, 1958. The couple had five children. The family moved to Pender in 1961. Judy was a dedicated farm wife and mother for several years. Her family moved to town in 1984, where she cooked at the nursing home until her retirement. She spent her retirement babysitting her grandchildren, and later on attending as many of their activities as possible.

Judy was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and Martha Circle. She enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, playing cards, watching soaps and movies, and her cat, “Fluffy.” Above all things, she loved spending time with her family.
