Norman Gerald Swanson, 91, of Wakefield NE


Norman Gerald Swanson, 91, of Wakefield, Nebraska passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Providence Medical Center in Wayne. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 4, at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield; with Pastor Barbara Hansen officiating. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Friday, April 3, at Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield. Burial with military honors will be in the Wakefield Cemetery in Wakefield. Memorials are suggested to Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield. Arrangements are under the direction of Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield.

Norman Gerald Swanson was born in Julesburg, Colorado on October 21, 1923, the son of Otto A. Swanson and Martha L. (Carlson) Swanson. He was baptized on October 12, 1924 in a school that served as a church. He moved with his parents to a farm near Bloomfield, Nebraska and went to County School District 152 until 4th grade. The family then moved to a farm south of Wausa where he attended District 150 in Pierce County, graduating from 8th grade. At that time he left school to help on the family farm. While living in the Wausa area, he was a member of Thabor Lutheran Church, where he was confirmed in 1938.

He worked on the farm until 1943, then moved to Omaha, where he worked for Omaha Steel. He was drafted into the Army but volunteered for the Navy. After receiving his discharge, he helped at home and drove a truck for Albert Clausen. He then took a job at K&K Kleaners in Wausa. He also worked for Burke Hardware, Carlson Home and Auto, and Anderson Farm Supply.

On August 1, 1950, he married Alice (“Becky”) Hoskin in Callaway, Nebraska. On August 16, 1952, they moved to Wakefield, where they owned Swanson Implement, an Allis Chalmers dealership. In May, 1966, he went to work for the Wakefield School District as a bus driver, maintenance man and custodian until retiring on August 20, 1987. After that he worked part time at True Value.

While living in Wakefield, he was a member of Salem Lutheran Church where he served several terms on the Church Council, 20 years in the Sunday School office, and sang in the choir and the men’s group.

He served two terms on the Wakefield City Council and was on the Cemetery Committee and the Citizen Advisory Committee. He was also on the scholarship committee at the Wakefield Health Care Center.

Norman is survived by his daughter Linda (Swanson) Nordby of Tallahassee, Florida; son Leslie “Bud” Swanson and wife Sandy of Norfolk, Nebraska; grandchildren Daniel Nordby and wife Rachel, Laura (Nordby) Jackson and husband Earl, Mary (Swanson) Kramer and husband Ben, and Amy Swanson; great grandchildren Colin Kramer, Andrew Nordby, Aliyah Jackson, Peter Nordby, Katherine Nordby, and Lydia Kramer; sisters Gladys Johnson of Trimont, Minnesota, and Leona and husband Eugene Wischhof of Wausa, Nebraska; brother-in-law Clarence Suhr of Wausa, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice “Becky” Swanson, parents, sister Helen (Swanson) Suhr; brother-in-law Allan Johnson, brother-in-law Edgar Daniel Hoskin and wife Margaret (Cobb) Hoskin; and half sisters-in-law Evelyn (Hoskin) Lammers, Vivian (Hoskin) Harvey and Maxine (Hoskin) Ewing.

Walter Gustave Albrecht, 97, of Thurston NE


Walter Gustave Albrecht, 97, of Thurston, NE, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, NE. Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 7 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson; Pastor Gretchen Ritola is officiating and Vicar William Storm. Visitation will be Monday, April 6 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Family will be present from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Emerson. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Emerson, NE. Walter was born on February 23, 1918 on a farm near Foster in Pierce County, NE to George and Rose (Pates) Albrecht. The family then moved to a farm near Orchard, NE and at six years of age in 1924 they moved back near family to farm in rural Thurston County, a quarter of a mile away from the farm that Walter and Violet lived on for the rest their lives. He was baptized by an Evangelical Lutheran minister on April 14, 1918. He was confirmed on Palm Sunday, April 13, 1930 at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson by Pastor Hugo Welchert. He attended Sunny Side District 24 public school through 8th grade and later attended the University of Nebraska Ag College at Lincoln for two winter terms. He began his lifelong career of farming and livestock raising with his father and two brothers. Walter also did some trucking. On June 24, 1942 Walter was united in marriage to Violet Joy Gutzmann at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson, NE. They purchased a farm next to his parents. Six children were born to this family. As the family grew over the years so did the farm. He continued to remain actively involved in farming and raising livestock until his death. He held many positions of responsibility during his lifetime. Besides being a devoted husband and father, he was a lifelong member and former councilman and treasurer of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Walther also served on several church committees, several terms including president of the Emerson-Hubbard School Board; a member of the Pender Hospital Board, the Emerson Rural Fire Board for 27 years, the Thurston and later Thurston/Dakota County Fair Board. He served several terms as an officer of the Merry Township board, and he was a former master of his Masonic Lodge and held the 32 degree. He served on the County ASC board, and was honored for being a member of the Thurston County Farm Bureau for the longest time. He is survived by his wife of 72 years Violet; and their six children: Judy Ann (Herb) Barelman of Bellevue, NE, Walter Richard Albrecht of Ainsworth and Emerson, NE, Robert William (Connie) Albrecht, Dr. James Loren (Kathy) Albrecht of Emerson, and Michael David (Joni) Albrecht of Thurston, NE, and Terry Lee (Julie) Albrecht of Thurston, NE; 17 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, two step grandchildren and four step great grandchildren, sister-in-laws, Bonnie Dahms, Irene Albrecht, Joanne Albrecht, Lavone Gutzmann; and brother-in-law Leonard Gutzmann, many cousins, nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter-in-law Mary (Mike) Albrecht, grandson Aaron Albrecht (Terry and Julie) and great grandson Francis Albrecht (Tristan and Kara), brothers George Albrecht, Lester Albrecht, sister and brother-in laws, William and Elaine Gutzmann, Lewis and Eleanor Gutzmann, Donna Lou Gutzmann, Leslie Earl Gutzmann, and Wayne Dahms.

Marjorie G. (Miller) Bonneau, 101, of Fremont NE Formerly of Craig NE


MARJORIE G. (MILLER) BONNEAU, the fourth child of Argie J. and Grace (McMullin) Miller, was born on their farm near Craig, Nebraska, on March 23, 1914. She passed away Friday, March 27, 2015 at the Pathfinder Place in Fremont, Nebraska.

Marjorie attended Craig Public School, graduating in May 1932. She attended Wayne State College, earning an Associate Degree, and finished with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Midland Lutheran College in Fremont. She greatly enjoyed teaching children at Alder Grove Rural School, Craig Public School and Fremont Elementary Public Schools.

On August 18, 1940, she married F. Guyet Bonneau and together they raised their five children. She loved music, teaching and being a “Mom”. She was a lifelong Methodist and had belonged to Fremont First, St. Paul in Omaha, Trinity in West Point and was again a current member of the Craig United Methodist Church, where she had been confirmed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy in 1986; her parents; three sisters; three brothers; one grandson, Sam Bonneau; and a special niece, Doris Merriman.

Marjorie is survived by her three daughters, Susan (Harvey) Sanders of Fremont, Frances (John) Meyer of Iowa City, IA, and Linda (Robert) Robson of Craig; two sons, Edward (Mary) Bonneau of Tucson, AZ, and William (Barbara) Bonneau of Omaha, NE; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Bill Miller of California; sister-in-law, Helen Miller of California; many nieces, nephews, former students and wonderful friends.

Paul Leo Tobin, 94, of Blair NE


Paul Leo Tobin was born to Leo and Anna (Hamilton) Tobin, February 13, 1921, in the old Tekamah Hospital.  He passed away peacefully March 24, 2015 at Carter Place in Blair, NE.

Paul attended Tekamah Public Schools and graduated in 193­9.  He attended Creighton University for one year where he met his future bride, Carol Storkan.  In 1941, he enlisted in the US Navy and served on the USS Steamer Bay as an aviation machinist mate.  After four years of service to his country, he was discharged on November 19, 1945.

On September 12, 1945, Paul and Carol were married at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Gardena, California.  They made their home in Tekamah, NE. where Paul farmed with his father, Leo.

In 1956, Paul and Carol and their four daughters moved to the ranch on Cabin Creek in eastern Montana.  Paul was a true cowboy and was proud of those years he spent on the Montana prairie.

In 1968, Paul and Carol returned to Decatur, NE to farm and later retired.  After Carol’s death, he split his time wintering in Tucson with Kitty and Mary Beth, and the rest of the year with Molly and Mike until entering Carter Place in Blair, NE.  He passed away surrounded by his family.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Carol and infants Paul Jr, Patrick, Malachi and Theresa, his parents Leo and Anna Tobin, his sisters Mary (Bob)O’Keefe, Fran (Frank) Smagacz, Marjorie (Mel) Gramke, Etta Jean (Leo) Ruhlman, sisters-in-law Margaret Storkan and Joan Storkan.

Survivors include his four daughters, partners and son-in-law, Sue and Judy, Molly and Mike Williams, Kitty and Mary Beth, and Laurie (Mother Joan Paul) and his spiritual daughters of the School Sisters of Christ the King; his grandchildren Katie Williams, Carrie and KC Braniff, Bill and Jenny Williams, and Nate and Ashley Williams; great-grandchildren John, Maggie, Brady, Ryan and Bridget Braniff, Riley and Claire Williams, and soon-to-be-born daughter of Nate and Ashley.  Also surviving him are many nieces, nephews, and Godchildren.

MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: Tuesday, March 31, 2015, 10:30 am, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Tekamah, NE.

VISITATION: Monday, 5 – 7 pm with family receiving friends. VIGIL SERVICE at 7:00 pm all at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Visitation Tuesday will also be held at the church one hour prior to the service.

BURIAL WITH MILITARY HONORS: Tekamah Cemetery, Robert Klase-Rogers VFW Post #7998 and American Legion Rogers-Crum Post #215 and VFW Bataan Post No. 3304 and American Legion LaFrenz Post No. 15.
