Evelyn Kahl, 86, of Wakefield NE


Evelyn Kahl, 86, of Wakefield, Nebraska died on Thursday, March 19, 2015 at the Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield, Nebraska. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 23, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Emerson, NE; Pastor Gretchen Ritola will be officiating. The visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Monday at the church and will run until the time of the funeral. Burial will be in the Wakefield Cemetery in Wakefield, Nebraska. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home of Wakefield is in charge of the arrangements.

Evelyn was born in Bloomfield, Nebraska the daughter of Carl and Anna (Bentjen) Wennekamp. At a young age the family moved to Thurston, where Evelyn graduated from high school in 1945. She attended teachers college and taught for a few years before marrying Willis Kahl on June 27, 1948. To this union four children were born: Dennis, Cheryl, Randy and Brent. The couple farmed in the Wakefield area until moving into Wakefield in 1995. Evelyn worked several years at the Wakefield Health Care Center as the housekeeping supervisor. She also cared for the elderly and worked as a housekeeper. Evelyn was a longtime member of the Happy Homemakers Extension Club, St. Luke Lutheran Church where she served on the WELCA and taught Sunday School. She enjoyed crafts, sewing, playing cards and baking, but most of all she loved the time spent with her family.

Evelyn is survived by her sons: Dennis (Nancy) Kahl of Seward, NE, Randy (Vicky) Kahl of Rancho Viejo, TX and Brent (Tatiana) Kahl of Indianapolis, IN and a daughter Cheryl (Warren) Johnson of Omaha, NE. She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Willis on November 14, 2014, three brothers: Otto, Marvin and Harold Wennekamp and a sister Eunice Krusemark.

Hazel Thompson, 101, Formerly of Moline Illinois


Hazel Thompson, 101, formerly of Moline, Illinois, died Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at Barthell Order of Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa, where she had resided for the past three weeks.  A private family service will be held at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa.

Hazel was born March 5, 1914, in Oakland, NE to Harry and Emma Henry. She married Harold Thompson, August 23, 1941, in Lyons, NE, and often expressed how lucky she was to have him as her life partner for the past 73 years.

Hazel was an optimist who faced life’s challenges with determination and a smile.  She was a 50 plus year breast cancer survivor.   In later years, she suffered from macular degeneration and arthritis, but nothing dampened her spirit.   This stylish and beautiful lady liked to be busy and had many interests.   Throughout the years she was active in many organizations such as the United Methodist Church, Lydia’s Circle, Girl Scouts, Garden Club, RQ, and Home Extension.   She was an avid seamstress, knitter, crafter and oil painter.  In recent years, she spent much of her time knitting with her cat Minnie sitting on her lap.  She also enjoyed her part-time work at the Two Rivers YMCA as a childcare provider.

Hazel enjoyed being around people and hosting gatherings in her home.  She looked forward to the annual vacation Up North each summer and sharing time with family and friends.  She loved and was loved by her family and will be deeply missed.

Survivors include her husband, Harold; children: Penny Thompson and Nancy (Rod) Smith of Moline, Illinois and Joe (Rhonda) Thompson of Decorah, Iowa; grandchildren:  Lindsey (Matt) Auliff, Anna Smith, Quinn (Megan) Thompson, Collin Thompson and Logan Thompson; sisters and spouses: Darlene (Jim) Strehle of West Point, NE and Maxine (Bob) Englehardt of Ft. Meyers, FL, and brother-in law, Arlin Feyerherm of Lenexa, KS and many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, five brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, two nephews, and an infant son, Jimmy.

Bernice (Brandemuhl) Lunz, 86, of Ponca, NE, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Laurel, NE. Funeral services will be Monday, March 23, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Bressler-Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield, NE. The visitation will be Monday beginning at 9:00 a.m. and will run until the time of service at Bressler-Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Ponca Cemetery in Ponca, NE. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Bressler-Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home of Wakefield, NE is in charge of arrangements.

Bernice was born June 4, 1928 to Paul and Bertha (Stark) Brandemuhl in Martinsburg, NE. She worked as a nurse’s aid in the Ponca and Laurel nursing homes. Bernice enjoyed doing puzzles and volunteering at various places. Most of all she loved being outside helping on the farm, gardening, and taking pictures.

Bernice is survived by her sons, Gordon Lunz of Ponca, NE, Lamont Lunz of Ponca, NE; daughter, Karen (Jerry) Brand of Collyer, KS; sister, Jane Lunz of Newcastle, NE; two grandchildren, Robert Brand and Patty Brand, and one great-grandson.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Betty Gotch.

Ora B. (Wolfe) Tippery, 90, of Walthill NE


Ora B. (Wolfe) Tippery, 90, of Walthill, Nebraska passed away Monday, March 16, 2015 at Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City, NE. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 20, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Walthill, NE; with Pastor Brion Tolzman officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Walthill, NE. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Siouxland. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Pender, Nebraska.

Ora was born November 30, 1924 near Bancroft, NE to Harry and Margaret (Sorensen) Wolfe. She was baptized November 13, 1932 and confirmed May 19, 1940. On May 31, 1941 Ora married Eldon Tippery. Together they lived in the Walthill area for most of their lives. She was a cook in the Walthill School for 22 years. In 2003, Ora moved to Burbank, Washington to live with her son, after his passing in 2005 she returned to Walthill. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Chruch and the Ladies Aid Organization. Ora was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan.

Ora is survived by 7 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Ora is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eldon in 1982; sons Paul in 2005, Tom in 1983 and Edward in 1959; 1 grandson; 1 great granddaughter; sisters, Marie Collins, Ella Potts and Leona Hightree; brothers Floyd Nottleman, Harold Nottleman, Bill Nottleman and Marvin Nottleman.

Darrell E. Launsby, 68, of Lyons NE


DARRELL E. LAUNSBY, was born to Rudy and Jeannette Launsby April 29, 1946 at the West Point Hospital in West Point, Nebraska. He passed away March 17, 2015 at his home in rural Lyons, Nebraska, after a long illness.

As a child, Darrell lived with his parents on the family farm, east of Lyons. He received his education in county school near the farm, and attended high school in Lyons. He moved to Lincoln, Nebraska to work as an auto mechanic for a time. He eventually returned home to the family farm, and started his own used car lot and mechanic shop.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his brothers, Richard, of Sargent, NE, David, of Homer, NE, Robert (Diane), of Colorado Springs, CO, John, of Lyons, Dale (Nancy Jean), of Omaha, NE; sister, Virginia, of Lyons; many nieces and nephews.

DARRELL E. LAUNSBY, 68 years, of Lyons, Nebraska, passed away March 17, 2015 at his home in rural Lyons.

Ronald Jerry Sparks, 64, of Decatur NE


Ronald Jerry Sparks was born on February 22, 1951 in Blair, Nebraska to Edison and Lillian (Jackson) Sparks. He passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa, at the age of 64 years.

Ronald completed eleventh grade in high school, and then enlisted in the Marines. He served his country, and was released with an honorable discharge.

Ronald married Annie McCulloch on November 10, 1969. They made their home in Decatur, Nebraska, and had three children. Ronald was foreman of the electrical department for Concrete Equipment Company in Blair. During his free time, he loved fishing, hunting and spending time with his grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian and Edison Sparks; wife, Annie N. McCulloch Sparks; daughter, Ann M. Sears; brother, Jim Sparks; sister, Sylvia Melby.

He is survived by his son, James J. Sparks; daughter, Misty Hardeman, both of Decatur, NE; three grandsons, Ty Sears and Rusty Hardeman, both of Decatur, Gage Sears, of Whiting, IA; sister, Cynthia McCulloch, of Danbury, IA.

Robert Kenneth Weatherly, Sr., 93, of Tekamah NE


ROBERT KENNETH WEATHERLY, SR. was born to Fredrick and Jessie (McCloud) Weatherly in Cheyenne, Oklahoma on November 3, 1921. He passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at his residence in Tekamah, Nebraska

R.K. grew up in the Belgrade, Fullerton, Nebraska area, and along with his brothers and sister, came to settle in Tekamah.

On November 5, 1941, R.K. was married to Verna Nylene Underwood in Belgrade. They lived most of their lives on farms around Tekamah, where he enjoyed farming and selling irrigation. They moved into Tekamah in 1975.

R.K. was a member of the United Methodist Church of Tekamah, Master Mason of Tekamah Lodge #31, Tangier Shriners, proud Burt County Democrat, and loyal supporter of the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

R.K. was preceded in death by his brother, F.M. Weatherly; sister, Dorothy Rieken; grandson, Michael Weatherly.

R.K. is survived by his wife of 73 years, Verna Nylene Underwood Weatherly, of Tekamah; children, Patricia Ann Nicholls, of Claremore, OK, Robert Kenneth (Beth) Weatherly, Jr., of Fremont, NE, Jerry Lynn Weatherly, of Bellevue, NE; three grandchildren, Mark (Amanda) Nicholls, of Irving, TX, Bruce (Teresa) Nicholls, of Claremore, Jill Weatherly, of Lincoln, NE; five great grandchildren, Tyler and Grant Nicholls of Claremore, Tori, Micah and Laura Nicholls of Irving. R.K. is also survived by brothers Sam (Jo) Weatherly, of Algona, IA, Denzel (Lois) Weatherly, of Tekamah; many nieces and nephews.
