Stephen S. Allen, 66 years, of Omaha, NE formerly of Fremont, NE passed away Sunday, January 18, 2015 at the VA Hospital in Omaha, NE.

Stephen was born January 8, 1949 to Marvin and Dosha (Reckard) Allen. He grew up in Fremont, NE and graduated from Fremont High School. After high school, he served in the United States Air force from April 27, 1968 to July 18, 1969. Stephen was an Eagle Scout, enjoyed painting pictures, and loved his yorkie, Zeeo Blue.

He is survived by his brothers, Bradley of Uehling, NE, Dirk and wife Susan of Fremont, NE, and Mitch of Fremont, NE; and friend Teresa Rock of Omaha, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents and favorite yorkie, Zeeo Blue.

John Paul “JP” Owen, 52, of Lincoln NE


JOHN PAUL “JP” OWEN, 52 years, of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away Sunday, January 18, 2015 at his home in Lincoln, surrounded by family after a battle with ALS.

John Paul was born on February 6, 1962 in Bethany, Missouri to John Kenneth and Lois Mae (Edwards) Owen. He spent the first four years of his life on a dairy farm then moved with his family to Tekamah, NE where he graduated from Tekamah-Herman High School in 1980.

After graduating from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, he married Lynn Ely on April 13, 1985 in Norfolk, NE. He was hired out of college by Liberty Mutual Insurance, where he advanced through the underwriting department. He worked there for almost 30 years. His professional advancement took them to Chicago, Boston, Columbus, OH, Indianapolis, IN and ended in Naperville (Chicago) before moving back to be close to family.

John Paul was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and a UNL lifetime Alumni member. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson, boating, golfing, snow skiing, traveling and visiting family. He was an avid lifetime Husker football fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Jack Ely.

He is survived by his wife Lynn; brother, Les (Jo) Owen of Laurel, NE; sister Deb (Tim) McAllister of Fairbury, NE; mother-in-law, Carolyn Ely Brower of Norfolk, NE; brother-in-law, Todd (Darlene) Ely of Centennial, CO; nephews and nieces: Brad (Racheal) Owen of Lincoln, Cristy (Aaron) Fryzek of Lincoln, Kylie Owen of West Point, NE, Jake (Katie) McAllister of Elkhorn, NE, Skylar, Sierra, and Shelby Ely of Centennial; two great nieces, one great nephew and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Donald Dean Betts, 76, of Plainview NE


Donald Dean Betts, age 76, of Plainview, Nebraska passed away Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Bryan East Medical Center in Lincoln, NE.  Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 19th, at the Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Plainview with Rev. Donna Runge officiating.  Military Honors conducted by the Plainview American Legion & VFW along with honors conducted by Plainview Fire & Rescue.  Burial with Military Honors by the Lyons American Legion & VFW will be in the Lyons Cemetery at 2 p.m. Monday afternoon.  Visitation will be on Sunday, January 18th, from 5-7 p.m. at the Ashburn Funeral Home in Plainview.  Ashburn Funeral Home in Plainview in charge of these arrangements.

Don was born November 7, 1938, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Robert and Frieda (Sass) Betts, they lived in the Elk City area and then moved to Lyons, NE where they made their home for many years. He graduated from Lyons High School in 1957, left a few days later for the Navy and served his Country where he was stationed the USS Norton Sound with an Honorable Discharge in March, 1961, and then served in the US Naval Reserve until May, 1963. He married Deanna Hultquist of Oakland, NE on June 25, 1961. Don and Deanna made their home in Lyons for 15 years where they welcomed 2 children to their family, Brenda and Brian. Don worked with his father at Betts Feed and Produce and also worked at Burt County Implement/Lubker Brothers. He was involved in the Lyons Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad, Lyons Jaycee’s, Masons, Lions Club and was a Charter member of Bethany Lutheran Church.

In 1976, Don and his family moved to Plainview, NE where he was a salesman for Cooper Feeds/Master Mix, he then worked for NFIB. After an accident in 1986 and three major back surgeries, he took an early retirement. During his time in Plainview, he served on the Volunteer Fire Department, VFW, Legion Club, was active in Good Sam’s Meadowlark Camping Club, was a Fire Arson Investigator, a Civil Defense Director in Plainview and was also the Pierce County Civil Defense Director. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Sr. and Frieda; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Sherman and Zella Hultquist; his wife, Deanna; brother, Robert Jr.; brother-in-law’s, Kermit Moseman and Laurence Hultquist, sister-in-law, Donna Hultquist, and niece’s Dynette (Betts) Smith and Pamela (Hultquist) Tate.

He is survived by his daughter, Brenda (Russ) Gausman and granddaughters, Breanna & Renee Gausman, and great granddaughter, Kinslee Shaw, all of Lincoln, NE; son Brian (Allison) Betts, granddaughter Devyn Betts & grandson Colin Betts, all of St. Paul, MN; sister-in-law’s, Lorelei (Jim) Wickstrom of Omaha, NE and Virginia Betts of Edwards, MO; brother-in-laws, Bill Hultquist of Oakland, NE, Dewey (Myra) Hultquist of Lyons, KS, Harold (Leona) Hultquist of Fremont, NE; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary L. O’Brien, 78 years, of Fremont, NE passed away Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE. Mary was born December 8, 1936 in Omaha, NE to Michael and Elizabeth (Tatara) Szaro. Mary grew up in Omaha and was a 1954 graduate of St. Joseph High School in Omaha. Mary married Bobby O’Brien on July 2, 1955 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Omaha. The couple moved to Fremont in 1960. Bobby died March 28, 2012.

Mary was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters in Fremont and volunteered working in the kitchen for Bingo. She was a homemaker and an excellent baker and enjoyed playing Bunko.

She is survived by daughters, Diane Zastera and Janice O’Brien both of Fremont and Lori and husband, Doug Bartek of Hooper, NE; son-in-law, Richard LeRette of Fremont; brother, John and wife, Judy Szaro of Papillion, NE; sisters, Dorothy Nelson of Bellevue, NE, Theresa Farnan of Papillion, NE and Helen and husband, Lyle Latimer of Omaha, NE: 11 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bobby; daughter, Mary LeRette; and grandson, Nicholas LeRette.

Funeral Mass will be 10 AM, Monday, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont, NE. The Rev. Father Benjamin Boyd will officiate. Rosary will be said at 7 PM, Sunday, with visitation on Sunday from 3 PM to 8 PM at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation continues on Monday at church 1hr prior to service. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Fremont. Memorials may be given to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Doris E. Metzler, 92, of Tekamah NE


DORIS E. METZLER was born October 22, 1922, to Arthur and Edith (Barker) Smith in Yankton, South Dakota. She passed away Monday, January 12, 2015, at the Golden Living Center in Tekamah, Nebraska at the age of 92 years.

Doris graduated from Blair High School in 1940.

On June 5, 1940, Doris was united in marriage to Jimmie M. Metzler, in Fremont, NE.  To this union four children were born: Phyllis, Dee, Jimmie Jr. and Diana.

Doris and Jimmie Sr. farmed southeast of Tekamah and later owned and operated the Tek-Inn and the Lyric Theater in Tekamah for many years.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jimmie Sr.; son, Jimmie Jr.; grandson, Con Bieck; granddaughter, Celicia Marr; sons-in-law, Bill Bieck and Clark Feuerbacher; two sisters; and one brother.

She is survived by her daughters, Phyllis Bieck of Porter, TX, Dee Feuerbacher of Huntsville, TX, Diana Metzler of Blair, NE; brother, Lawrence D. (Jane) Smith of Zeeland, MI; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

MEMORIAL GRAVESIDE SERVICE: Thursday, January 15, 2015, 11:00 am, Tekamah Cemetery, with a luncheon to follow at the Chatt Center in Tekamah.
