Kats’ Korner: Winter in Nebraska, Good and Bad

I am not a winter person. There are days I wonder why I live in Nebraska since I don’t care for winter.

After thinking about it for a while, I came to the conclusion that I live in Nebraska because I love it here. It is home.

Winter has its’ good side. I love to watch a nice snowfall. The snowflakes glisten as they gently fall from the sky. I don’t play in the snow like I did as a child. I used to enjoy sledding, building snowmen and forts and having snow ball fights!

I remember the winter of 1975. People still refer to it as the bad snowstorm of ’75. When you’re a child, you don’t see it as a bad thing.

I didn’t. We didn’t have school, which was a definite plus. When I looked outside, all my eyes could see was white! It wasn’t just a few inches of snow. It was feet of snow! I was nearing my twelfth birthday. I thought I was an expert on snow, thinking I had never seen anything like this in my life! My short eleven winters didn’t make me an expert, but I thought they did!

All I wanted to do was put on my coat, hat, gloves and boots and run outside! I had a Red Rider Sled. I had gotten it for Christmas when I was about eight years old. I adored that sled! We lived on a hill in Tekamah. There were many kids in the neighborhood. We would all gather at the top of the hill, taking turns sledding down the alley. When we reached the bottom of the alley, we would try to jump the street and go down the next alley to the bottom of the hill.

Sometimes we didn’t make it and landed in the street. That didn’t matter, we would still go down the alley to the bottom, run back up the hill and start over! We would sled for hours! Never noticing the cold, or think about a winter storm being dangerous for those travelling to work in such bad conditions.

We just knew there wasn’t school and we were having fun.

It is wonderful to be a child. Adulthood comes too soon, and lasts all the rest of your life.

Now when the snowstorms happen, I want to hibernate. I worry about those driving on the snow packed, icy roads, especially my family. I wish everyone could just stay home and be safe. I honestly don’t believe any job is worth losing your life. Living to see another day is of upmost importance.

As to every season, there is good and bad that comes along with it. We are having some bad now, but we will get through it. We are Nebraskans, use to enduring, which makes us very strong people.

Up next will be spring, which is beautiful, but also can be quite stormy, as we witnessed last year.

When I think of living where there isn’t winter, I realize they endure the threats of hurricanes.

I am used to Nebraska weather. I would rather stay here.

There is no place like home.

Occupation:   Currently retired.  Was a homemaker, and then was a substitute teacher for many years after my children were old enough to attend school during the day.
Family:   Husband, Tim.  Three grown children:   Stephanie, Tim Jr., and Tom.  Currently have four grandchildren, with another on the way.
If you were granted three wishes, what would they be?   More wishes. I’d also wish for a lifetime of health and happiness to my kids and grandkids.  Lastly, I’d wish for a beautiful mountain cabin / house in the Rockies, overlooking a mountain stream.
What was your favorite food as a child?   I don’t like this as much today, but my mother made the greatest chicken pot pie I’ve ever tasted.  It was something that always made me feel comfortable, and I always looked forward to it.
Where do you live?   On a farm between Pender and Bancroft.
If you won the lottery, what would be your first purchase?   My very first purchase would be a new pick up for my husband!
What is your favorite movie?   The Notebook.
If you were President, what would be your first priority?   If I were President, my first priority would be reversing all of President Obama’s legislation.  Instead of ruling the country like a dictator, I would give the power back to the people.  I would not simply veto every bill or sign executive orders based on what I wanted to do, as we have today.
What would be your dream vacation?   My dream vacation would be to go to Australia for a month.  To just explore every inch of that continent that I could.  I’ve never been, and probably never will be able to.   So far, our anniversary trip to Paris has been my favorite travel experience…. very close to my dream trip.  🙂
What is your favorite form of exercise?    I have an elliptical that I really enjoy, but nothing beats taking my dogs for a long walk as the sun goes down during the summer.
What is your favorite quote?   “If today were the last day of your life, would you want to do what you are about to do today?”   –  Steve Jobs
Happy 28th anniversary on Saturday to Tim and Cindy Stevens on Saturday! This picture is on their 25th anniversary in Paris! Happy Anniversary and many more! Photo courtesy of Cindy Stevens.

Kats’ Korner: 2014 Blessings, Start 2015

Are you enjoying 2015 so far? I am. I consider every day a blessing, making the most of every moment from the time my eyes open until they close again for a peaceful rest.

2014 brought many blessings to our family. I am blessed to run my own business. I am happy knowing it has grown each and every day. I have made many more friends along the way, making my journey even brighter. I have also enjoyed becoming more and more involved on the Oakland Chamber of Commerce. Helping to promote the community my husband and I live in is very important to me. Oakland has been my home for a good portion of my life. We are fortunate to have many friends here. Small town life is wonderful! Oakland is a thriving community, and it continuing to do so is why I choose to help in any way I can. I want future generations to live here, enjoying the area and all it has to offer as much as I do.

I am very lucky and blessed to be married to a wonderful man. He is the best. He also works hard, but when you love your job as he does, it doesn’t seem so hard. He has always been an outdoors guy, growing up on a farm. He likes working where he feels like what he does matters and helps others. This job does just that. I am very proud of him!

The most important blessings in our family are two new granddaughters, Charli and Penelope. They are adorable. Yes, I am prejudice, but I can be! Holding them and looking into their pretty eyes is seeing the future. I wonder what they will grow up to be. I love being a grandma. I am glad they are so close so we can see them often. Every moment with them is priceless. When I leave them, I am already looking forward to seeing them again. I take many pictures so I have the memories on our wall, computer, phones, anywhere I can put a picture!

Life can be very hard. Not all of 2014 was wonderful. A good friend of mine fell ill and nearly lost her life. To see her smile now, working hard to be completely recovered, is a joy to me, and especially, to her family. We rang in the New Year together, as we always do, eating a meal together at our house, laughing and carrying on. I couldn’t imagine beginning the year any other way!

Now off to 2015! I have goals, not resolutions. I believe in goals, but a resolution to me is trivial. I am expanding my horizons, taking on a couple more challenges. I need more hours in the day! I work every day, morning to evening, sometimes late into the evening, striving to attain my goals. I get one chance at life and I intend to do my best! That is why I chose to be self-employed! I needed more of a challenge! It has definitely defined me!

I hope everyone has a wonderful 2015!

Merry Christmas! Blessings to all!

It is a week until Christmas! Are you as excited as I am?

This has been an amazing year for Jeff and I. Our son and his fiancé, Thu, blessed us with a granddaughter, Charli (named after my dad), on October 28th. Our daughter, Whitney, and her husband Tri, blessed us with a granddaughter, Penelope, November 21st.

We also have two other grandchildren, Grayce 8 and Grayhm 6. To say we have been blessed is an understatement.

Christmas is not about giving gifts. Some forget the reason for the season. The birth of our Savior is the reason for the season. I saw a saying somewhere and held it in my heart.

The birth of our savior is the reason for the season. But, his birth is also the reason for every day we are here to enjoy, living, laughing and loving others.

My husband, children and grandchildren mean the world to me. I thank the Lord every day for the life I have been given and those I am blessed to have in it.

I can’t wait to share Charli and Penelope’s first Christmas with them. There is something special about Christmas in the eyes of a child, even when they are so small and don’t know what Christmas is yet. They are God’s newest blessings and all of us know how very lucky we are to have them.

We are going to Justin’s house on Christmas Day. It will be so nice to have Christmas with our kids and their families. I plan on taking many pictures! Children grow so fast. It is nice to have pictures to reflect back on.

Making memories is so important. I have come to find them more and more precious as I have gotten older.

I also feel blessed that I am young enough (sort of) to enjoy our grandkids, playing with them, reading to them, anything their hearts desire. I have to admit, I get a little worn out, but it is a happy tired! I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Do Your Kids do Chores? Only 28% do

Interesting stat I came across this weekend. Only 28% of kids today do chores. Parents aren’t having kids do chores today. Of the 28% that do them, they consider making their bed a chore. They also believe they should be paid to do chores. What do you think?
When I was growing up, I had many chores. I could cook, clean and do laundry by the time I was ten. I didn’t get paid to do them, it was part of being in a family. I never thought of being paid.
Did you have chores? What were they? Did you get paid? Did you have your kids do chores?
I am interested to hear your thoughts on this subject.

  • Kathy Peterson We did whatever we were told and when we needed something it was usually there…for money we walked beans and picked up corn after harvest.
  •  Janet Kai Amen Kathy Peterson same here, always had chores, babysat, walked beans, had a paper route, etc. Started buying my own clothes for school by the age of 10. Cause that’s what we were taught. Had to buy my own first car, not like now where some kids expect mom & dad to buy whatever they want. My kids have been taught like I was, you want something you have to earn it, seems like they take care of it better that way!
  •  Laura Marr Mittlestadt Growing up on the farm we had a job, water the sheep. 5 bucks a week but I don’t think we ever really got paid and they weren’t our sheep otherwise we probably would have had more chores.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving. Have a blessed day with your loved ones. I thought I would share some tips I received from someone on how to celebrate Thanksgiving. Interesting and fun.

  1. Watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade, no matter how old you are.
  2. Don’t try to clean the turkey with utensils alone — it just doesn’t work.
  3. Continue old traditions, but also add new ones.
  4. Keep a fire extinguisher near the kitchen — always.
  5. Wear stretch pants. Enough said.
  6. Remember that peppermint soothes the digestive system after overeating.
  7. Reflect on the things for which you’re grateful.
  8. Make naps mandatory after dinner.
  9. Start searching for food container lids early. They deliberately hide themselves.
  10. Embrace the quirks of family and friends.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours from Kat Country Hub.Thanksgiving
