Social Speaks: Texting and Driving

Social Speaks: Texting and Driving

Nebraska lawmakers are debating passing a law that texting and driving could get you pulled over. What are you thoughts?

National Hobby Month

January is National Hobby Month.

Every month throughout the year has a designation, more than just one usually. January happens to have many, including hobbies.

What are your hobbies?

I have many. Sometimes I have very little time to devote to my hobbies. One thing about a hobby, it is a great stress reliever. I think everyone needs an “out” once in a while.

Among my hobbies are reading. I love books on history. I collect books about President Kennedy. I also have read books about President Lincoln and Andrew Johnson.

I am a huge fan of Nicholas Sparks books and Debbie Macomber.

I enjoy music. Mostly country, but 80’s music is great!

I have crocheted many items over the years, but hadn’t done much of it the last couple of years. I crocheted three scarves in November and December. I am working on three more now. My next crocheting adventure is headbands. I have seen many of them that button in the back. I want to make some of those.

I enjoy writing, obviously. I try to tackle a new writing technique from time to time. I find it fascinating. I have always been a social person, and writing is a way to be just that.

We spend time in the summer camping and fishing. I also enjoy swimming in our pool.

I also love a long, relaxing walk.

There are many hobbies to choose from.

Corey McCullock, New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s resolutions always sound like great ideas at the time, but how often do we actually follow through?

There is always the common, “I am going to go to the gym more and get fit and healthy and lose weight” kind of resolution. That sounds like a great way to start off the new year. But as January continues on, how many people actually stick to their resolution? I read an article online that showed the top ten resolutions for 2014. From first to tenth they went lose weight, get organized, spend less/save more, enjoy life to the fullest, learn something exciting, quit smoking, help others in their dreams, fall in love, and spend more time with family.

Those all sound like great ideas for New Year’s resolutions, but in the same article it said that only 8% of people truly follow through with their resolution throughout the whole year. That’s not 8% of everybody on earth, because the article concluded that 38% of people in the world don’t make New Year’s resolutions. Now keep in mind that not everybody on earth was surveyed for this article, so there is obviously room for error. There are some rather, dumb, resolutions out there. Like the resolution to follow through with your New Year’s resolution. That is not even a real resolution, how do you know if you were successful or not?

I have yet to think of a resolution for this year, but I would be fine 2,3,4,5 and 10 on the top 10 list. I am usually very good with my resolutions. A few years ago I made one that I was going to quit drinking pop, and I went two years without one, and now if I have more than two at a time they make me sick.

I hope that everyone can stick to their resolution this year, good luck!

Kats’ Korner: Happy New Year

It is that time of year. Time to reflect on the year we will be ringing out in a few hours, and time to anticipate hopes and dreams for the year to come.

As I reflect on 2013, there are so many things that come to mind.

My life has seen many changes this year. The first change was becoming a college graduate with a degree in Journalism. I finally made a dream come true! This also influenced my second change.

The second change was quitting my job at the Oakland Independent/Lyons Mirror-Sun.

There were many reasons I made that decision. The most prominent reason was unhappiness. Nobody should work in an environment that is no longer fulfilling. As my education progressed, the work environment changed. One day, with the support of my husband, I moved on.

We had discussed future plans many times. Once the decision was made, progress began.

I am thrilled to be serving so many people in so many areas of Northeast Nebraska. I am pleased to let you know more and more people are following my paper every day, through many aspects of social media. I have visited with so many people from all over the world! Technology is amazing for this type of newspaper! What a blessed adventure this has been.

Thank you all for your continued support.  I am anticipating a thriving 2014!

The next biggest change for me in 2013 was being appointed to the Oakland City Council.

I was shocked that I was chosen, as I am sure there were other worthy people that were willing to serve.

I have been on the council for nearly three months. I have learned a great deal in such a short time.

It takes a great deal to maintain a city, keeping it running, serving the citizens, the many tasks that come along are more than most people are aware of, including me until now.

I am honored to be on the city council. It is very important to me, as I want to do the best that I can for the citizens of Oakland.

The most important part about every year is my family and friends. I love each and every one of you. I wish you nothing but happiness in the coming year and every year thereafter.

Happy New Year. Take Care, hug your loved ones and God Bless all of you.

See you next year!
