Social Speaks: Government shutdown

The deadline is looming! In less than 15 hours, the government could be shut-down. What will be the repercussions if it does shut down? What are your concerns?

Social Speaks: Husker football

The Nebraska Cornhusker football team has a bye week tomorrow. What are your plans for the day without the Huskers?

Social Speaks: Government shutdown

The possibility of the government shutting down at 12:00 a.m. Tuesday morning seems to be growing. What do you think of the situation? Are you concerned about the government shutting down?

Quote: History, in general, only informs us what bad government is-Thomas Jefferson

The quote by third President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, maybe says it all. Is our current government setting a bad history? Tuesday, the government could potentially shut down. What are your thoughts? Are our elected officials looking out for us? Please sound off your concerns, thoughts and issues you may have. Time is clicking away.

Social Speaks: U.S. Postal Service

The United States Postal Service is considering raising the cost of stamps from 46 cents to 49 cents due to a “financial disaster” according to Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe. The USPS is facing a six billion dollar loss this year and is running out of cash to pay it’s bills. What are your thoughts on this situation?

Social Speaks: Boxed cereal

There was a report out over the weekend indicating the sale of boxed cereals has declined. What do you think the reason for this is? Do you still buy boxed cereal?

Social Speaks: Husker Nation

After a tough loss last week and the release of an audio tape of Bo Pelini, are you as proud of the Huskers as ever and going to watch the game today or are you the fair-weather fan Bo said?

Helpful Hints: Here are a few, let’s add more to the list!

I wish to start something new, and hopefully fun.

Everyone has a way they do things, such as making your own cleaning products, or how to get gum out of hair.

I would like everyone to submit your household hints. Any type of hints are welcome, from cleaning to cooking and everything in between.

I will submit the first one.

If your tube of mascara seems dried out, but there is still some left. there is a way to fix it. Put a few eye drops into the tube of mascara. Shake it up, and you will have useable mascara again! I have tried this and it does work.

Lets add some more. We can all learn something from each other.

Here is one from Rosa Schmidt:

I have found the best shower cleaner–especially for those with hard water. Take equal parts white vinegar and Dawn dishsoap (the regular, not ultra). Warm up the vinegar so that it mixes well with the Dawn and keep in your spray bottle. Spray your shower down after each use and you will never scrub again!

The next one is from a twitter follower, BJ:

If you have really dirty dishes, fill up your sink with hot water, and add dish soap (Dawn or whatever you like to use). Then, let the dishes and pans soak in that for a few hours… the grime comes right off, and you save a ton of effort scrubbing away!

The last one is from Rebecka Fleischman:

Spider Repellant: 10 drops peppermint essential oil with 8 oz. water in a spray bottle. Spray around doors, windows and in corners. Can increase the potency with more peppermint. Spiders hate peppermint.

Social Speaks: Bo Pelini

What do you think of the audio tape recently released with Bo Pelini saying some inappropriate things about the Husker fans two years ago? Should he be punished, fired, or do you think his apology is acceptable?

  • Melissa Thomas Hawk I think everyone has a “moment” that they are not proud of and we should all remember that, his just happened to be recorded and saved for future use apparently. Also, Bo’s “vein busting” way is no surprise to anyone, maybe just the words this time…….
  • Kathy Peterson For me it is just another nail in his coffin as I have long NOT been a fan of Bo and this type of behaviour is the main reason why….I would like to see a coach on staff who has respect for the players, the game and the fans…..and who the word sportsmanship means something ALL the time….not just when it can impact a good feeling for him….I will probably catch some flak for this…but that is allright because it is how I feel
  • Leann Canarsky Jorgensen Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. While I am not a huge Bo fan either, I do believe that he is a human being & makes mistakes just like all of us do. I can’t honestly say that I have never said something that I didn’t really mean. He said something he shouldn’t have said in public, but that was just it, he was “venting” in the privacy of a room. I think it’s horrible that someone recorded that without his knowledge & used it against him. I do believe he can be a hothead, but his team seems to also respect him & like him. Haven’t you ever had a day when you just thought your top would blow if you didn’t let some of it out? I know I have!  I love my Huskers, win or lose, but there are definitely those that walk away when the going gets tough! I think if anyone should be embarrassed , it’s Tommie Frazier!
  • Kathy Peterson I have Leeann…but he does it more out of ordinary habit than a once n a while blurp…there have been numerous occasions where this type of thing has happened but this is by far and away the worst…and in the press box…he should have been very aware of the possibility that it was being recorded…at any rate it is done….maybe not over with….I love the Huskers….what I don’t love is the language and the attitude of the man behind them right now….and I have not for a long time….when the University Board had to get involved some time ago to get him to tone down…..it was because they saw this very type of behaviour and the potential damage it could do…it is the worst kind of pr possible for Nebraska…..and the school has had more than it’s share of it in the last few years….
  • Leann Canarsky Jorgensen I am beginning to think that they are never going to find a coach that made everyone as happy as Devaney & Osborne did! I’m not saying that they shouldn’t do something about him, as I said, I’m not a fan of him either. I’m just saying that until the Huskers are winning every game, there are a lot of people that aren’t happy, no matter what!
  • Kathy Peterson You are right there..and there are many who will not follow them when they are losing…….and we all like to see the Huskers win…for me the wins are not so much the important thing…although it is nice…it is how they play and how they act win or…See More
  • Kathy Peterson I just want my
Cornhuskers back! And to have the Gentlemans Team and coaching back……it will never be the way it was….but it could be so much better than it is….
  • Donna Hirt Villwok Everything is soooo true what you said above.

Occupation – Owner/Operator Soup-N-More LLC

Family: Husband, Allen. Children: Honour Dugan, Allison Farrens, Ryan Fleischman, Garrett Fleischman; Grandchildren: Joseph Dugan, Hannah Farrens.

When did you first start growing your own foods and why? After getting sick, I started cutting chemicals out of my diet, Missed convenience food and started creating my own mixes to replace things that we had been buying a little over 6 years ago. By cutting the chemicals and toxins out of my diet my health improved tremendously. The Omaha World-Herald wrote an article about our spinach flour with a recipe in August 2010 and our mixes became a business.

How long have you been in business in Lyons? We opened our new commercial kitchen and store late June 2012.

What was your favorite food when you were a child? All foods were my favorite (except nuts and raisins). I have always loved trying new foods, new recipes and new restaurants.

What are your hobbies? Soup-N-More has become our hobby. We work our business 7 days a week. We are in a “constant state of change”. Our newest venture is adding a Winter CSA (community supported agriculture) to our schedule where we deliver our foods, as well as other local vendors to pick up points in Omaha two Saturdays a month during the non-farmer’s market season (November to April). I would like to write a book about changing your lifestyle based on how I changed mine. Already have the title “The 1-1-30 lifestyle”

What is your favorite time of day? Morning.

What is one of your favorite quotes? If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we’d all have a Merry Christmas

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Play the piano.

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet? Jesus Christ

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do? Hire the best attorney and accountant I could find.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose? Scarlett O’Hara

What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to grow up and have a normal family. Then when I did grow up, I realized there is no normal…the abnormal is the normal.
