LDNE Music Department Performs

By Amelia Schlichten

On Friday, December, 6th the high school had their Christmas concert. The High school Choir started the concert by singing “All I Want for Christmas is You,” “Christmas Time is Here,”and “Give us Hope.” The guitar Ensemble went next with their songs “Green Sleeves’, “Wanted dead or Alive”, and “Rock’n Around the Christmas Tree.” .

After that, the J.H. Choir went. They performed “Christmas in three minutes” and “ Somewhere in My Memory.”. The drumline went next playing the school cadence “ Northeast Swag.” After the drumline, The Ipad assembly went next with the song “Thriller.” Isn’t that  a great Christmas song? The combined band came next with “The Christmas song,” and “ The Nutcracker.”

The Nutcracker included Arabian Dance, Chinese Dance, Dance of the Reed Flowers, Waltz of the Flowers, and the Trepak. The last group of the night was the LDNE Jazz Band. They performed “Louie, Louie.” After the concert, there was hot apple cider and cookies for everyone to enjoy. The music department wants to thank everyone who came and watched the performances.

Bow Whitley and Aaron Williams played “Medley” on the guitar. Andrew Schlichting played “Boil Them Cabbage”  on the Banjammer and his brother, Caleb Schlichting played “Ode to Joy” on the piano. Zach Hegge played “Up On The House Top” on the saxophone, on the trumpet Brennan Ferguson played “When the Saints”, on the saxophone Derek Petersen played “Jolly Old Saint Nicholas”, and Reid Preston played “Star Wars” on the trombone. The last student but definitely not the least, was Tatiayana Harris who sang “Royals”. Mary Goff played “Silent Night” on the piano proving that music can last a lifetime. Everyone did an amazing job at the recital! We hope to see you at the next one!

Alexandria, Virginia – Mr. John Donald Mayo, a teacher at Lyons-Decatur
Northeast School in Lyons, Nebraska, has been awarded a national
scholarship by the Association of American Educators Foundation. The
scholarship will allow Mr. Mayo to take a guitar workshop, which will
improve his teaching abilities and overall music skills.

“In my 4 years of teaching guitar in the classroom setting, I have learned
that the guitar attracts students from all walks of life,” said Mr. Mayo.
“The aspect I am most excited about is the fact that it attracts the
attention of students who would not normally enroll in any of my other
music programs.”

AAEF is committed to offering individual educators various avenues for
improving effectiveness in the classroom. “AAEF commends the dedication
that Mr. Mayo has demonstrated in securing funding for his professional
development,” said AAEF Chairman Gary Beckner. “These scholarships and
grants are an investment in empowering teachers as professionals across the
country.”

The Association of American Educators Foundation is a non-profit charitable
foundation that provides the public and public school teachers with
educational information to help reform and improve the education of
America’s youth. The national scholarship and grant competition is held
twice a year in the fall and spring and is open to all educators. The
spring deadline is March 1, 2014.

LDNE Junior High Students Attend Honor Band Festival

By Jesse Mutum

Recently, both 7th and 8th grade went to the First Annual Homer Honor Band Festival. This year the Honor Band was held in Homer, which is an addition to the Band Festival in Lyons. This year, since it was the inaugural year, there was only one ensemble, but in the years to come there is hope to be up to three ensembles. With the help of Clinician Dr. Gary Reeves from the University of South Dakota, the day was complete.

To get into the Honor Band, students were selected. Students from LDNE selected were Cassidy Mentink, Layne Miller and Kassandra Prieto. The day went with two rehearsal sessions, the first from 9:30-12:00 then a lunch break from 12:00-12:40, then off again to the second rehearsal from 12:40-4:00 and the concert

followed at 4:30. Songs that were played include Parade of the Jesters, Hosts of the Freedom, Amazing Grace, Cucina Bella, Dakota Morn, and John Williams Trilogy. The Homer Honor Band was very enjoyable and a great experience, and kids are exited to go again in future years.
