The Cougar football team suffered a road lost at Winside.  The (1-5) Wildcats picked up their first win in  a decisive 52-26 contest.

“We did not show up ready to play,” said Coach Maresh.  “We are a  young team and this should be a lesson for them.  You cannot take your  opponent lightly, no matter what their record is.”

Winside got the first points of the game.  Northeast got two scores by Dylan Hardeman in the second period, but trailed 22-12 at the half. In the third period Winside put the game away with three more touchdowns and PATs.  LDNE scored only once.

The Cougar defense had trouble controlling the rushing offense of the Wildcats.  They averaged 7.1 yards per carry.  Two sophomore running backs accounted for 296 of their 320 rushing yards and scored all seven of the Winside touchdowns.  Winside added 79 passing yard on 6 completions for 399 total yards.

Dylan Hardeman scored all of Northeast’s points.  He scored three times on the ground.  His long run was 23 yards.  The senior back also caught a twelve yard pass for a score.

Oakland-Craig Pummels Stanton

Oakland-Craig pummeled Stanton last Friday night, beating them soundly by a score of 44-14.

“Our execution early in both halves really was the difference in the game.  We were able to jump to a big lead early in the first half, however penalties in the 2nd quarter really took away our momentum,” said Head Coach Joe Anderson. “We challenged the kids to come out with that same energy the 2nd half, and they answered that with two quick TD’s to put the game away.”

Oakland-Craig is celebrating Homecoming this week, but due to Laurel-Concord-Coleridge canceling the rest of their football season, reportedly due to injuries, the King and Queen of Homecoming were crowned at a volleyball game earlier this week, which has never happened in the history of football here.

“This bye week will allow us some time to heal some bumps and bruises, and will also allow us to get back and work on some fundamentals and clean up some of our mistakes,” stated Anderson.

Lady Cougars Compete in Two Triangulars

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

Week five of the volleyball season was very busy as the Cougars had two triangulars meets during the week and an eight team tournament on Saturday at Clarkson. In all, LDNE played seven matches. The Ladies produced three wins while dropping four matches. Their season record is 8-13.

Tuesday’s matches were at Wisner. Lyons-Decatur took on two state rated teams, (16-3) Wisner-Pilger from C-1 and (10-7) Howells-Dodge from D-1. The Gators and Jaguars won in two sets.

The Cougars gave the Gators a game early in both matches. They were tied at nine in both, but the hosts pulled away for wins. They took a 25-13 win in game one. In the second set after a nine all tie the Gators pulled away for four point lead. Northeast back to a 20-18 score before falling 25-19.

Howells-Dodge took their match by scores of 25-17 and 25-13. Northeast was out hit by the Lady Jags 27 to 13. Madie Ronnfeldt toped the Cougars with 4 kills.

On Thursday, the Cougars breezed through Boys Town with 25-12 and 25-10 wins. Brianne Haskell topped with 7 kills; Darcey Simonsen had 4 ace serves, and Tessie Collins had 4 blocks.

Northeast took on another state-rated team in the second match. They gave (16-2) Cedar Bluffs a scare as the match went three sets. The Wildcats opened with a 25-22 win. The Cougars countered with a 25-17 win. The third set went to the Cedar Bluffs. 25-17. Kelly Wakeley topped LDNE with 9 kills and 2 aces serves. Madie Ronnfeldt had a team-high 4 blocks.

At the eight team Clarkson meet, the Cougars were bracketed with Pender in match one. The (5-13) Dragons took as 25-22 wins before Northeast closed out the match with 25-21 and 25-16 games. Topping the team was Brianne Haskell with 10 kills, Kelly Wakeley with 5 aces, and Tessie Collin with 3 blocks.

The winner’s bracket meant a second meeting with Howells-Dodge. The Jags found a tough opponent this time. They had two close matches with 25-19 and 25-21 wins. This time Northeast held them to a 24 to 17 advantage in kills. Kelly Wakeley had 6 kills.

The third place match was a rematch with(11-9) Oakland-Craig who narrowly beat LDNE earlier in the season in three games. Once again the teams proved to be equally matches as two points provided the victory margin in all three games. This time the Cougars came out on top as they got a 25-23 win in game three. The defense was able to stall the Knights as Brianne Haskell had 31 digs, Darcey Simonsen had 19, and Lexie Bacon and Kelly Wakeley added 14.

Turnovers Decide Cougar Win

Turnovers proved to be the deciding factor as the Northeast Cougars took a 46-40 win over Bancroft-Rosalie, last Friday. The teams traded scores during the first half, but a fumble recovery and pass interception by LDNE sent the Cougars to the lockers with a 40-24 half time lead.

The Cougars stretched their lead to 46-24 in the third period.  Henneman and Christiansen had a pass and catch that covered 21 yards.

Bancroft-Rosalie did get two scores in the third period.  After a 20 yard run and Tietz’s third TD pass the Panthers closed to a 46-20 deficit.

Coach Maresh said that the defenses played really well in the fourth quarter.  Neither team scored. The coach added that defense rose to the occasion and played their assignment as well they have all season.

Oakland-Craig blasted Crofton Friday night, scoring 34 unanswered points.

“I thought we did a good job of cleaning things up this week.  We really minimized our penalties and turnovers this week,” stated head coach Joe Anderson.

Nick Arlt led the way scoring five touch down, four rushing and one receiving, earning 296 yards total for the evening.

“Cody Mace really stepped up his game this week, which allowed us to open up the passing game more this week. Nick had another great game, as our line got great push up front, and when you give Nick a seem he can turn it into a big play,” Anderson said.

Leading the way defensively was Conner Thiele with eleven tackles, followed by Joel Johnson with seven and Tommy Nelson with six.

“I thought our defense did a good job of shutting down their offense most of the night. Conner Thiele again had another great game at linebacker,” Anderson stated.

Oakland-Craig is ranked sixth and is taking on Ponca this Friday night in Ponca at 7:00 p.m.

“We need to continue to improve as district play starts this week. In order to guarantee yourself a playoff spot, we know you have to win our district and Ponca is one of the stronger teams in our district,” Anderson said.

The Oakland-Craig Knights took on long-time rival Tekamah-Herman Tigers at home last Friday night.

The game was a thriller, but the Knights prevailed, downing the Tigers soundly 36-12.

“Our number one goal was that we wanted to get out to a fast start and get a lead early in the game.  I thought we did a good job of accomplishing that,” stated head coach Joe Anderson.

Nick Arlt had 376 yards rushing in the game on 79 carries. Others exploded, creating some excitement of their own.

“Our line came out and really created a good push and Nick was doing a great job of finding the cut back lane and created some big plays. One of the biggest plays of the game was Mace’s TD pass to Bryce. Both guys made great plays and that really opened things up for us,” Anderson said. “I wished we would have played with that same intensity in the 4th quarter, as I thought we did not finish the game as strong a I would have liked.”

The defense responded well too with Nick Arlt leading the way in tackles, having 17, followed by Tyler Groth, Bryce Uhing and Tommy Nelson with six each.

“I thought our defense played really well most of the game. Tekamah relies heavily on the big play, and we did a good job of shutting that part of their game down for 3 quarters,” Anderson stated. “Our kids did a good job of recognizing where their playmakers were at, and we were assignment sound most of the night.”

The Knights moved up four places in class C2 to seventh. They take on Crofton this Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in Oakland.
