Lady Cougars Season Ends

The Lady Cougar’s basketball season came to an end at sub-districts, but not before a record breaking first round game against Walthill.  In a wide open run and shoot game Northeast defeated the Lady Blujays 82-39.  The shots were harder to find in the finals as Bancroft -Rosalie claimed the title with a 40-21 win.

The Walthill game started slowly with Northeast leading by only 5-4 when the Cougars went on a 14-4 run to break away from the (5-14) Blujays.   The game plan to feed the ball to senior post Vanessa Peterson worked well as she had 12 of her game-high 22 points in the first period.  Lexie Bacon chipped in with two treys and Northeast led 25-13 at the quarter.

The scoring slowed in the second period as the Cougars got only 11 points on 4 of 14 shooting.  Bacon added another trey which tied the school record of 32 three pointers in a season.

Six players scored in the third period as the Cougars raced away from the Blujays.
They out scored the Walthill girls by 26 to 3.  Madie Ronnfeldt was 6 for 6 from the line.  Libby Henneman struck twice from the out side. The Peterson sisters tallied 8 points. Haley Bacon scored a basket.  With 4:04 left in the period Lexie Bacon took a pass from Haley, spotted up from outside the arc and made her 33rd trifecta of the season, a new school record.

The Cougars scored 20 points in the fourth quarter;  fifteen of the points were bench points.  Kelly Wakeley had six and Tessie Collins had four points.  Ronnfeldt and Henneman also scored.

“I thought that we might have a shot at the school record for points in a game,” said Coach Cronin, “but the new running clock rule makes it pretty hard to do.”

82 points is the second highest total ever scored by the Lady Cougars. Their 75 scored against Allen early this year ranks as number four.

The Cougars had two players score in double figures, both were in the 20’s.  Vanessa Peterson had a career-high 22 points while Lexie Bacon contributed 20 while getting her first double-double with a team leading 11 rebounds.

A defensive battle turned into a blowout for Bancroft -Rosalie in the finals.  The first quarter both teams player some solid D as it took three minutes for B-R to score.  They ended up making only 2 of 12 shots.  The Cougars were hampered by ten turnovers and did not put up any points until Vanessa Peterson scored with 46 seconds left.  They had only two shots during the period.

Turnovers continued to plague the Cougars the rest of the game.  B-R’s trapping zone defense forced the Cougars away from the basket and jumped the passing lanes when L-D players  picked  up the dribble.  The Panthers used  a 12-4 run to vault to a 24-10 half time lead.

The Cougars recouped to stop the Panther scoring after intermission, but had not answer for the pressure defense.  Northeast had only 18 shot during the game, half their turnover total.

Seniors Haley Bacon and Vanessa Peterson finished their careers with two and ten points respectively.  They were team leaders for a young squad which finished with an 8-16 record.

Lexie Bacon could not add to her three point total.  She was limited to one shot.

Allie Vogt led (14-9) B-R with 11 points.  Kayli Wheaton had 6.

A competitive game fell apart with three minutes left in the first half as Northeast fell to (9-14) Wisner -Pilger 61-45.

The Lady Cougars held a 24-23 lead on a Haley Bacon free throw with 2:56 left in the second quarter.  They did not score again until Libby Henneman nailed a trey with 5:30 left in the third period.   In that time the Lady Gators spurted to a 39-27 lead.

“That 16-0 run by Wisner-Pilger really did us in,” said Coach Cronin.  “They were just too physical for us to handle under the boards.  They got so many second chance baskets.”

The Gators had a 36 to 21 advantage in rebounding.  They had 15 offensive rebounds.

After the Gators got the lead in the first quarter the Cougars battled back.  Darcey Simonsen had two quick scores. Madie Ronnfeldt and Haley Bacon added goals and tied the score at eight apiece.   Ronnfeldt’s  trey at the 2:25 mark put Northeast in the lead and Tessie Collins followed with a deuce to give the Cougars a 13-8 advantage.

Lexie Bacon got the Cougars on the board with two three pointers at the start of the second period..  Northeast led  19-14.  After a Gator three, Darcey Simonsen added a basket. Then W-P got three second chance scores to take a 23-21 lead.

Northeast cashed in on three free throws to retake the lead.  Abby Peterson sank a pair while Haley Bacon made the first of three after a three point shooting foul.  Wisner closed out the period with eight points in the paint to take a 31-24 lead.

It was more of the same after intermission as the Gators took advantage of three offensive boards to run off eight more points before Henneman connected for Northeast.

W-P stretched their lead to 22 in the fourth quarter before threes by Henneman and Bacon brought the Cougars back to a 16 point deficit.

Darcey Simonsen was the Cougar’s top scorer with 10 points  Lexie Bacon and Libby Henneman each had three treys for nine points.

The Lady Cougars ended the regular season by defeating winless Logan View 52-30.  The Lady Cougars will take a 7-15 record into their sub-district game against Walthill.  The Lady Raiders fall to 0-21.

Northeast started slowly as Logan View got four quick points from a goal and two free shots.  Darcey Simonsen scored first for the Cougars.  Madie Ronnfeldt  added a free shot and Northeast got the lead on a Vanessa Peterson lay-in.  Northeast closed out the period with a deuce by Lexie Bacon and trey by Libby Henneman.  They led 10-5 at the end of one.

Northeast used the long bomb for all their second period scoring.  Libby Henneman and Haley Bacon each had one trey while Lexie Bacon connected twice.

Logan View could not muster much of an offense as they made only one of eleven shots and one of four free shots.  Northeast led 22-8 at the half.

After making only 3 of 14 shots in the third period the Cougars closed with a fury by hitting on 7 of 12 fourth quarter attempts.  They ran up 28 points while the Raiders had 22 in the second half.

Senior Haley Bacon led the Cougars with 12 points.  Her freshman sister, Lexie, followed with 11.  Lexie’s thirty footer at the buzzer brought her season total to 29 for three pointers.

Coach Cronin was happy with the team’s play.  “We limited turnovers and put up shots.  For the season the number of shots we take is about equal to the number of points we score.   Tonight we only had eight turnovers and we got off 45 shots.”

The Cougar boys ended conference competition this week with two road games.  They took on (16-7) Wisner-Pilger and (1-20) Logan View.  They will finish the season this Friday at (5-15) Emerson-Hubbard.

The Wisner-Pilger game proved to be one of the low points of the season as the Cougars only led once.  Chevy Henneman got the Cougars off to a 3-0 lead before the Gator zone defense shut down the Cougars while the W-P shooters made 55% of their shots on the way to a 61-37 win.

“We’ve struggled against zone all season,” said Coach Lahm.  We don’t have enough height to pose an inside threat, so we turn into a bunch of jump shooters and we were not on tonight.”

Northeast trailed  by 5 at the end of one quarter.  They were down by 11 at the half.  After intermission they stumbled even further back as they made only 3 of 13 shots.  The Gators had build a twenty point lead, 47-27 going into the final eight minutes.

Northeast made 15 of 46 shots (33%) for the game.  The converted only 3of 22 three point tries.  They were also hampered by 13 turnovers.

Chevy Henneman topped the Cougars with 12 points.  Dakota Riecken scored 6 of his 10 points in the fourth quarter.

The Cougars finished the week off with an impressive 58-40 win over Logan View.

Lyons-Decatur put on a clinic in the first period against the Raiders.  They made all nine of their shots while limiting Logan View to just five shots and no rebounds.  Northeast led 18-3 after one period.

“Logan View played a match-up zone,” said Coach Lahm.  We passed the ball really well and found the seams for a lot of easy shots.   What can I say about our defense?  They have hustled like that all year long.”

Dakota Riecken had six of his game-high 14 points in the first quarter as he worked the paint. Alex Brehmer and Marcus Hegy also had a couple of scores.

Bobby Simpson matched Riecken for scoring honors.  He scored 7 points to pace the team in the second quarter.  The Cougars went to the lockers with a 31-15 lead.

Northeast started the second half off by scoring the first 7 points.   Riecken and Brehmer slashed through the lane while Henneman struck from behind the arc.  The Raiders cut a 21 points deficit down to 15 by sinking 6 free throws at quarters end.

The Raiders would close the lead to 47-34 as they opened the fourth quarter with two more from the charity line. Bobby Simpson put the brakes on to their rally by scoring five of the next six Cougar points.  With two of four free shots by Riecken Northeast has built a 54-36 lead.  David Bishop  would add a goal and Alec Brehmer finished the scoring with two free throws.

The win brings the Cougar’s record to 11-9.  The finished the season with a 6-8 record against East Husker Conference opponents.

By Clare Wiltse

The Lady Cougars lost to Clarkson/Leigh in the consolation round of the East Husker Conference Tournament.  The Patriots took the lead in the second quarter and raced away with a 53-3 win.

Northeast had a good start with buckets by  Darcey Simonsen and Abby Peterson and a triple by Lexie Bacon giving the Cougars a 7-6 lead after one period.

Simonsen continued to pour in the points in the second quarter as she scored three times.  Northeast was not able to keep pace with the Patriots as they got ten points from Libby Janousek .  Clarkson /Leigh led 22-19 at the half.

The Cougar offense stalled in the third quarter and the Patriots grabbed a 13 point lead.  Lexie Bacon started the half off with a trey. Vanessa Peterson’s basket and free throws by Darcey Simonsen were only other points while C/L added another 16 points.

Clarkson/Leigh’s Alyssa Novotny made sure of no come back by the Cougars.  The sophomore nailed three three-pointers as she out scored the Northeast team in the fourth quarter.  Novotny had a game-high 19 points.

Darcey Simonsen was the high scorer for Northeast. She had 11 points.  Vanessa Peterson had 5 points and 8 rebounds.

Clarkson/Leigh raised their record to 9-12.  The Cougars will take a 6-14 record into the last week of play.  They travel to (8-13) Wisner-Pilger and (0-19) Logan View this week.

Next week sub-districts will be at Pender.

Cougars Squeak Past the Trojans

“It was an ugly game,” said Coach Derek Lahm as he described the 41-40 win over Scribner-Snyder in the consolation bracket of the EHC tournament.  “We struggled offensively all night, but the kids were resilient and pulled out the game with some defensive stands and a last second shot and some good luck.   We only led twice in the game, at the end of the first quarter and with six second left to play.”

It was a horrendous shooting night for the Cougars.  They made only 13 of 50 shots (26%).  They were 9 for 32 on to pointers and 4 of 18 from behind the arc.  Their free throws were not much better as they converted only 11 of 19 tries.

The Trojans put in 17 of 34 shots.  The nailed   16 of 28 twos(57%) but were only good on 1 of 6 threes.  They made 5 of 9 free shots.

After leading 11-10 after one period, the Cougars went seven and half minutes without scoring in the second quarter.  “We couldn’t make a five footer and missed four straight free throws before Marcus finally made two free shots,” said the coach.  Northeast finally got a basket as Chevy Henneman made a steal and scored with 10 seconds left.  S-S took a 23-13 lead into the locker.

The Cougars limited S-S to just three baskets in the third quarter.  The got 5 free throws to go with baskets by Hegy and Henneman.   They closed out the period with a trey by Simpson and found themselves trailing by only two ;points, 29-27.

Bobby Simpson continued with the long bombs and made a trey for Northeast’s first points in the fourth quarter.  Alex Brehmer added a bucket, but the Trojan had a six point lead, 38-32, with a minute and a half to play.  Simpson lifted a second trey over the Trojan zone defense with about a minute left to make it as three point game.

Scribner added another score which Northeast answered on a Hegy driving lay-in.  The Trojans missed the top end of a one and one on their next possession and the Cougars found themselves at the line after Alex Brehmer was fouled.  Brehmer is only a 30% free shooter for the season, but he sank both to pull Northeast to within one point.

A defensive stop put the ball in the Cougars hands in the closing seconds of the game.  Dakotas Riecken made his only basket of the night after he chased down a tipped pass under the basket and put it in for the winning score with six seconds to play.

The Trojan zone defense created problems for the Cougar shooters.  Bobby Simpson found some openings to nail four three pointers as he led the team with 12 points.  Marcus Hegy had 9 points and 11 rebound.  He had 7 offense boards.   The team out rebound the Trojans 32 to 19.  On a poor shooting night they had 18 offensive rebounds.

Coach Lahm was proud of his team which has posted ten wins for three seasons in a row.   They have a 10-8 record with two weeks to left in the regular season.  Coach Lahm noted that with two wins they could assure themselves a winning season.  That was be the first over .500 record since 2004.

Scribner-Snyder falls to 6-11.  They had beaten the Cougars twice in previous meeting this season.  They had 57-52 and 53-47 victories over Northeast in December.

Northeast will take on (13-7)  Wisner-Pilger and (1-18) Logan View in a pair of road contests this week.

LDNE Boys and Girls Lose Tough Games in EHC

By Clare Wiltse

Being the smallest school in a sixteen team conference has its problems like trying to get respect from the big schools.  When the brackets are drawn up for the annual EHC basketball tournament, L-D’s wins over small schools does not rate too high.  They ended up with a 12th and 14th seed.

The two teams showed that they can play with the top teams as it took four quarters to decide the winners in the East Husker tournament.  The girls lost to third seeded Howells-Dodge 44-35.  The boys’ game went to the last minute before fifth seed, Twin River, assured themselves a 59-53 win.

Dodge-Howells got off to a great start on their home court.  After Haley Bacon opened the scoring the Jaguars made three of their next four shots.  The Cougar hung in their with Darcey Simonsen and Vanessa Peterson scoring.  An 8-2 run made for a 16 to 8 lead for  H-D at the quarter.

The next two quarter saw the Cougars outscore the Jaguars 21-16.  Lexie Bacon’s five points in the second quarter made it as four point game, 15-19.  After her sister, Haley, made a free throw it was down to three points.  Howells-Dodge rallied with eight points to take a 27-20 half  time lead.

The Cougars outscored H-D  by 7 to 2 when the second half resumed.  Darcey Simonsen ‘and Vanessa Peterson  scored goals before a trey by Tessie Collins pulled the Cougars to within two points with three minutes left in the quarter.  Vanessa Peterson added two free shots with 40 second left in the quarter.  A late free shot gave the Jaguars a 32-29 lead.

H-D created some breathing room early in the fourth quarter.  They made only two of ten shots, but used their height advantage to grab four offensive boards with two going for put backs.  Northeast struggled to put up points as six turnovers hampered their offense.  Darcey Simonsen got them going with six points, but the Jaguars relied on six free throws to claim a nine point win.

Darcey Simonsen and Vanessa Peterson led the Cougars with ten points each.  The Jags were led by Faith Molacek with 12 and Leah Grovijohn with 9.

“You cannot find any fault with the effort tonight,” said Coach Cronin.  The girls played their hearts out.”

With four senior starters back from the Tournament Runner-up team of 2013, Twin Rivers was a very creditable opponent with a 14-4 record.

The Titans opened in a zone defense as they tried to neutralize the offense of Cougar post man  Dakota Riecken.  They succeeded in slowing Riecken, but the Cougar guards made them change their minds.  Simpson and Henneman found openings to launch threes while Alex Brehmer and Marcus Hegy slashed the lane for deuces.  Twins River made 9 of 12 shots and led 19-17 at the end of one period.

Twin River went to man-to-man defense in the second quarter.  Brehmer tied the score with his patented floater from the lane.  Riecken used his spin move to answer a Titan score and keep L-D and TR even at 21.

Twin River used a 6-0 run to put a clamp on the lead.  Scores by Riecken, Hegy and Brehmer could not match the Titan’s output as the half ended with the Cougars trailing

34-26.

Northeast found themselves down by twelve points early in the half. After an opening basket by Riecken the Titans ran off six straight. Dakota scored two more times to bring the lead down to eight, 40-32.  Brehmer’s leaner with 4:15 completed a 6-0 run as the Cougars were back to a six point deficit. Another 6-0 run by Twin river was ended by a Taylor Fuston put back.  The Cougars trailed by ten with a quarter to play.

Northeast’s never say die attitude kept the Titans on edge during the fourth period.   An opening score on a put back by TR’s Crowell would be the Titans last basket.  Brehmer had two scores from the lane and Simpson found his mark from outside the arc.  Free throws kept Twin River alive as they made 5 of 8  to lead by ten.  The Cougars made their charge in the last four minutes as Hegy and Riecken were perfect from the line and Chevy Henneman hit the trifecta to make it a 54-50 game.

Forced to foul,  the Cougars gave back four points  before Henneman connected again with 18.2 to play.  A quick foul and two misses gave the Cougars life, but there was no more magic as Northeast could not connect on two three pointers and Twin River escaped with a 59-53 win.

Northeast had three in double figures.  Dakota Riecken had 14,  while Chevy Henneman and Alex Brehmer had 12.

“We re playing really well right now,” Said Coach Lahm   “Twin River has a nice team and we gave it  our all; we just came up a little bit short.  Lahm said he is  looking forward to playing Scribner  who has won only 2 of 9 games since Christmas.

The last  home game of the season did not go well for the Lady Cougars as they lost to Oakland-Craig 34-18.

“If you would have told me that we were going to hold them to 34 points,  said Coach Cronin, “I would have thought that we would had a good chance to win the game.   Our inability to score took us out of the game.  With Brianne injured we lost some leadership.  We just needed some one to step up.”

Both teams ran a  lot of offense in the first half with little production.  Both teams were patient running their motion offenses, but neither put up points.  O-C took 23 shots, but hit on only 4.  The Cougars had ten turnovers and only 9 shots.  O-C  led 10-6 at the half.

Northeast sealed third fate with just two points in the third quarter.  Eleven turnovers and 0 for 4 shooting allowed the Lady Knights gain a 22 point lead.  Northeast got two points from Haley Bacon’s free throws at the 4:47 mark.  The game was still at hand with O-C leading by just 14-8.  A 16-0 run made for a 30-8 deficit going into the fourth quarter.

The Cougars out gunned the Knights in the fourth period.  Madie Ronnfeldt got the team rolling with a score.  Free throws by Simonsen and Vanessa Peterson and a basket by Haley Bacon made it a 30-16 game.  Lexie Bacon closed out the scoring after O-C added four points.

Haley Bacon led the team with 9 points. Brynn Charling led O-C with 10 points while her twin, Bailey,  had 9.

“Last year’s game left a sour taste in our mouth,” said Coach Lahm of a 53-44 loss in 2013 where O-C shot 34 free shots.  “This year it really sweet to get the win”

The Knights got a fast start with a 7-0 run.  Dakota Riecken got the Cougars on the board after four minutes and fifteen seconds of play.  The Knight would add two more scores while Northeast got free throws from Riecken and Simpson  and a trey by Chevy Henneman.  O-C took an 11-8 advantage into the second period.

Northeast struck fast in the second period.  A jumper from Henneman and lay-in by Riecken gave Northeast a 12-11 lead.  After a Lindstrom score Henneman countered with two free throws.  The Knights answered with a Cole Mitchell basket.  With 4:17 left in the half Bobby Simpson’s triple gave the Cougars the lead for good. After gaining a 17-15 lead,  Northeast closed out the half with a 10-6 run.  The Maroon took a six point lead to the locker.

It took three minutes for the teams to score after intermission.  O-C’s Lindstrom made three free throws after being fouled while shooting.  Brehmer countered with a trey.  The teams traded points as Brehmer added two more baskets and Simpson had two charity line points.  A late O-C free shot made it 37-32.

Am strong defensive effort put the game away for the Cougars.  The Knights struggled to score; making only 2 of 11 shots.  The Cougars cashed in with 3 for 5 shooting and by going six for  eight at the line.    It was a strong period for Dakota Riecken who had 7 of his team-high 12 points.
