Gator softball third in districts

Story courtesy of Wisner Chronicle

The Wisner-Pilger Gator softball team repeated as the third place district placer, grabbing those honors from this week’s Class B-3 tourney in Blair.

Runner-up Bennington had W-P’s number, upending the Gators twice in the tourney, including a 2-0 win Friday in the game to determine the second finalist to face eventual district champion Blair in the finals.

Getting runners on base was not the problem for W-P, but getting the runners home was. The locals pounded out seven hits, but stranded seven baserunners in the loss.

Bennington picked up a 1-0 jump in the opening inning on back-to-back doubles, then added the game’s only other run in the fifth for insurance.

W-P was led by Kayli Wheaton and Samantha Liermann with two hits each. Heidi Miller suffered the mound loss, closing with a pair of strikeouts and just six hits given up.

In a wild matchup with Bennington on Thursday, the locals were tied with the Badgers 3-3 in the fifth inning, but saw things take a wild turn.

In the top of the inning, Bennington’s lead-off hitter lined out to center, but was awarded first base as an illegal pitch was called. The runner moved up on a wild pitch, then scored on back-to-back fielder’s choice groundouts.

In the latter half of the inning, a one-out walk and single put runners on first and second for the locals. Kari Liermann followed with a single that appeared to plate the tying run, however, W-P’s Krista Ott was called out at the plate.

W-P put runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings, but neither plated to tie the game.

Eve Ortmeier led W-P in the loss with two hits and two runs driven in. Heidi Miller also had two hits.

The three wins in the tourney began with a 10-3 first round victory over Lutheran High NE.

The locals trailed 0-1 entering the last of the first inning, but made quick work of erasing the deficit. A four-hit first inning included doubles from Alexis Knust and Samantha Liermann.

Things were tight through two innings, but W-P broke the game open in the last of the third inning with four runs. The rally was helped out by hits from Suzanne Ras and Kari Liermann.

Knust led a ten-hit effort with three hits from her lead-off position. Wheaton added two. Miller picked up the mound win.

After the initial loss to Bennington, the locals moved back into title contention with wins over David City/East Butler 10-0 and DC West 8-1.

Knust led once again with two hits in the win over DC/EB, while she was joined with two hits in the win over DCW by Ras and Miller.

Ras earned the pitching win over DC/EB and Miller the win over DCW.

The 3-2 tourney effort closed the 2013 campaign for W-P with a 14-17 record.

In action leading into the tourney, W-P closed the regular season with a 12-2 setback at Guardian Angels CC.

The Cougars finished off their regular season with a 50-36 win over (4-3) Scribner Snyder.  The win which did not come easy brought the Cougars record to 7-1 as they enjoy a bye week before the playoffs start.

IMG_5945The Cougars moved back into the Top Ten in Eight Man D-2 with a  win over Bancroft-Rosalie by the score of 30-14.  Northeast  has a 6-1 record while the Panthers drops to  4-3.

“We came out with a fast start and stayed focused the whole game,” said Coach Maresh.
The Cougars got two touchdowns in first period by Chevy Henneman and held the Panthers scoreless for most of three quarters.  Henneman closed out LDNE’s opening drive with a ten yard run.  On the Cougars’ second offensive possession he broke loose from 35 yards out.  Henneman added a 12 yard score in the second period.

“This was the best team defense we have played all season,” added Maresh.  “Every one was involved; we were disciplined;  we had good tackling.  Against their read option we did as good job.  The ends, Marcus and David, helped control the read and Taylor was good at coming up from the secondary.”

Maresh noted that the B-R defense gave Chevy Henneman opportunities and he took advantage of them.  The junior back had three first half scores.  He led the team with 172 yard while averaging 8.6 yards per carry.  Quarterback Alex Brehmer only carried 14 times and had a season-low 67 yards. He completed 1 of 4 passes for 10 yards and a touch down pass to Dakotas Riecken.

The Panthers averaged 3.5 yards per carry as they gained 196 yards for the game.  They completed just 4 of 13 passes for 28 yards.

Riecken and Brehmer topped the tackles with 24 and 22 respectively.  The rest of the team joined in with gang tackling as many had season highs.  Bobby Simpson had 8 tackles from his nose guard position. At the ends it was Hegy also with 8 while Bishop had 7.  Linebacker Henneman had 11.  Taylor Fuston added 5 stops while freshman Tyler Hardeman made 6 tackles.

The final regular season game for the Cougars is this week.  They will take of Scribner-Snyder who has a 4-2 record.  Northeast will have a bye week before the playoffs start on October 31.

Cougars suffer first loss

Two top ten teams faced off at Lyons last weekend as the Flyers of Humphrey Saint Francis defeated the Cougars 38-16.  After a nip and tuck first half the Flyer put the game away  with two third period scores while holding Northeast scoreless after intermission.

Lyons-Decatur took the opening kick off and marched down the field and scored in just over two and a half minutes.  Chevy Henneman toted the ball over from two yards out.     HSF methodically moved the ball for the next six minutes and tied the game after a JJ Oltmer 3 yard run.

Northeast finished off their second offensive possession with a score at the start of the second period.  Henneman found the end zone after a three yard run.  Brehmer added the point after and the Cougars had a 16-8 lead.

HSF would tied the score on a Oltmer  2 yard run with 4:47 left in the half.

The game would take a turn against Northeast on their next go on offense.  Faced with a fourth and short Coach Maresh decided to go for it.  A fumble ended the drive and HSF found themselves with a short field.  They scored a go ahead TD with 27 seconds left in the half.

Both teams had effective ground games.  HSF rode JJ Oltmer as he carried 35 times for 198  of the Flyers 238 yards.  The Cougars’ two some of Brehmer and Henneman gained 287 yards.  Brehmer had 151 yards on 27 attempts while Henneman got 136 on 24 carries.

The defense was tested the Flyer attack.  Once again Dakota Riecken and Alex Brehmer came up big.  Brehmer was in on 20 tackles along with an interception.   Riecken had 19 tackles.  Taylor Fuston added 7,  David Bishop 8,  Chevy Henneman 5 including a TFL, and Marcus Hegy 5 tackles.  Freshman Tyler Hardeman got 2 tackles and Bobby Simpson added one.

Lady Cougars win four

Cougar Volleyball had a good week as they picked up four wins.  Northeast split in action at Wisner where they lost to  (13-4) Howells/Dodge and beat (2-15)  Madison. They swept a triangular at Boys Town ass they beat both the host and (10-8) Cedar Bluffs.

On Saturday, they played at the Clarkson/Leigh Tournament. They had a tough opening draw as they faced Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family.  The Bulldogs who are rated in C-2 won in two matches.  The Consolation game went three sets. Cross County came out on top as all three games were close.  Northeast had to settle for a seventh place as they beat Clarkson/Leigh.

“We were playing much better this week,” said Coach Cronin.  “Two of our losses were to rated teams  (Howells-Dodge & Humphrey/LHF).  “This was our second go at Humphrey and we played them much tougher this time.  Against Cedar Bluffs we had a really bad first set, but came back strong to beat a good team.”

The Cougars will take a 7-15 record into two EHC contests this week.  They travel to Logan View to face the 5-15 Raiders.  Thursday they will host the 12-5 Fillies of Stanton.

Wisner-Pilger’s repeat run to the title game of the East Husker Conference Softball Invite was cut a game short by the Twin River Titans.

In  a semifinal contest played Saturday in West Point, the Titans stormed to a 12-0 win over the locals in just three innings of play.

The winners jumped on W-P for four runs in the opening inning and eight more in the second. Meanwhile, the locals managed just three hits in three innings, but did twice have runners as far as third base.

The loss sent the locals into a rematch of last year’s title game, played Saturday in the consolation contest. The results the same as Tekamah-Herman upended W-P 4-2.

The Gators held a 2-1 lead after scoring twice in the fourth inning on a run batted in double by Kayli Wheaton and a sac fly by Samantha Liermann.

The lead was gone after five innings as T-H mounted a two-run fifth, then added an insurance tally in the sixth.

W-P’s lone win in the tourney came in the opening round, but in no easy manner as West Point-Beemer pushed extra innings before falling 6-5 to the locals.

W-P netted two runs in the top of the eighth inning after two outs. Eve Ortmeier provided a big blow, driving home the initial run of the inning with a double. Kari Liermann followed with a triple to plate Ortmeier.

WP-B managed to score once in the last of the inning, but the Gators worked their way out of the inning without further damage to secure the win.

Wheaton led the way with three hits, followed by Lexi Knust and Suzanne Ras with two each.

In regular season play on Thursday, the locals mustered only a bunt single by Knust as Wayne rolled to a 12-0 iwn in four innings of play.

The 1-3 week left the locals with a 10-14 season record. W-P winds down the regular season in the upcoming week, heading into district play which begins Thursday, Oct. 10.
