Oakland-Craig Handles Battle-Creek Huge Loss, Next Up State Championship Game!

Oakland-Craig beat Battle Creek last Friday night 27-14 in a game of revenge for the OC Knights. Battle Creek defeated Oakland-Craig earlier in the season. Now, the Knights are headed to the state championship game against David City Tuesday at 2:45 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.

Below are the comments from OC Head Coach Joe Anderson, who was also on the OC Champion football team of 1995.

“Wow!  What a great atmosphere, what a game.  As we pulled up to the stadium at 6:00 the place was already electric. The boys fed off that energy and really came out and threw the first couple punches. This was key, as the last time we played them, they physically beat us up for four quarters.  You could just see the confidence in our guys grow as the game wore on.

It is easy to come out and play with that fire in the opening minutes, but to sustain it for four quarters like they did,  is tough. Our kids played very physical and stayed discipline on defense. We had to slow down their potent running game, and we did a decent job of that. Defensively it was total team effort, as the guys did a great job of swarming to the football and making plays.

Offensively we knew it was going to be tough to run right at them. We worked a lot on our passing game, and installed some new wrinkles this week. The guys really executed things well. Cole threw the ball really well, all the receivers  made some great plays, and the line did a great job of giving Cole time.

The guys really put in a lot of extra time the last couple weeks preparing for each playoff game. They will now be rewarded with a memory they will not forget,” stated OC Head Coach Anderson.

Don’t forget to come out for the community pep rally this Sunday at 5:00 p.m. at the OC new gym to cheer on the Knights! Up after that, Championship game!!! Go Knights!!

Lady Cougars Season Comes to an End

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

The 2015 volleyball season came to a tearful end as the Lady Cougars lost in the sub-district finals in five sets to Cedar bluffs.  The moxy  of this group of girls shown through as they were down 2-0 and fought back to win the next two games and force a fifth.

The Cougars had defeated ((27-5) Cedar Bluffs and were expecting a tough match against the 9th rated Wildcats.

The first set found the teams tied at 5 when Cedarn Bluffs strung three points together for an 8-5 lead.  It was a catch up the rest of the set for LDNE.  They could never get closer than two points at 13-15 before the Wild Cats put on another three point run as the Cougars had three straight hitting errors.  LDNE would end up losing 25-17.

The second set was a total disaster for Northeast.  Cedar Bluffs scored the first eleven points.  After both teams had service errors Cedar Bluffs ran off four straight for a 16-2 lead. The Cougars were out of sorts and playing with no confidence.  The set ended as a 25-12 loss.

One game from elimination the girls gathered off the court to see if they could regain their composure.  The Cougars came back with a new confidence after the meeting and won the next two games.

“I didn’t say anything too special. It was a decision that each individual player had to make in order to come back. The girls stepped up their game and we can say with full confidence that they left nothing on the court. They gave it their all. After the 2nd set it was a close game the rest of the match. It just came down to who was going to finish out each point,” said Coach Hathaway.

In the third game, the Cougars exploded away from an 8-8  tie to take control of the game.  Lexie Bacon  would serve the team into the lead, but the Wild Cats made a short run to claim an 11-10 advantage.  Brianne Haskell served up five straight points with the help of 3 kills from Kelly Wakeley for 16-11 lead.  Another Wakeley kill side-outed Cedar Bluffs and Brandi Simonsen added two more points during her service.  Northeast would add a point during each of the next five service turns and fittingly a Wakeley kill would be game point, 25-21.

The Cougars were on the roll in the fourth set.  They jumped to a 15-6 lead.  Brandi Simonsen served two aces.  Tessie Collins had a kill and an ace block.  Madie
Ronnfeldt celebrated two kills and Lexie and Brianne each added one.  The Wild Cats battled back with eight of the next eleven points before a service error turned the ball over to LDNE.  Brandi and Mickayla Petersen closed out the set with the help of Ronnfeldt and Wakeley kills.   They won 25-18.

The speed round saw Northeast score the first two points.  Cedar Bluffs rallied with a four point run and followed with four of the next six points for an 8-4 lead.  An ace block and two kills by Madie Ronnfeldt pulled the Cougars to within one point.  Brianne Haskell had two kills to tie the game at 9.  Lexie Bacon found the donut hole for a kill for a 10-10 tie, but the Wildcats got two kills before a third attempt went long.  Brianne served up a point with Tessie getting the kill and the game was tied at 12.

An ace block by Cedar Bluffs put the Wild Cats in the driver’s seat with a 13-12 lead.  Maddison Roumph had her second ace of the set for Cedar Bluffs.  Match point was kill that looked long. but was ruled to be a tip.

Cedar Bluffs would lose to Howells-Dodge 3-0 in the district finals to win a trip to State.  Coach Hathaway commented about the EHC  opponent who beat LDNE 2-1, “I wish Howells-Dodge the best at state. They are a team that I think has improved a lot over the season and it will be exciting to see what they can do.”

Lyons-Decatur Loses Close One in First Round of Playoffs

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

Lyons-Decatur journeyed to Nuckolls county next to the Kansas border for their first round game in the NSAA Class D-2 playoffs.   Their opponent was Lawrence-Nelson.  The Cougars and Raiders locked up in a defensive first half before the host pulled away for a 38-22 win.

The teams traded touchdowns in the first period.  Lawrence-Nelson scored with a 5 yard run by Gavyn Buschkoetter.  Northeast countered with a 37 yard pass play from Montana Riecken to Tyler Kroger.

The second period proved to be a scoreless, but the Raider defense had to  rise to the occasion to stop the Cougars in the red zone twice.

Lawrence -Nelson started the second half with as ten play drive.  The marched 42 yards with Buschkoetter finishing it off with a 3 yard.  The double extra point pass play made it 16-8.

Lyons-Decatur NE advanced the ball all the way into the Raider red zone on the ensuing drive, but Lawrence-Nelson stopped yet a 3rd drive at the Raider four yard line.

On the very next play, Gavyn Buschkoetter took a handoff into the heart of the Cougar line, appeared to be stopped, then pulled off a Tommy Fraiser type bowl game run, escaping from the pile to sprint 76 yards for a touchdown. That stretched the Raider lead to 24-8 with 5:08 left in the 3rd quarter.

Marcus Hegy brought the Cougars to within ten points as he scored with 2:09 left in the quarter.  The 24-14 score would be as close as the Cougars would get.  Penalties and a swarming Raider defense would limit the Cougars chances to get any closer in the fourth period.

L-N would stretch their lead to 38-14 with scores on a 13 yard pass and a 9 yard run in the fourth period.  Northeast would get the final points on a Hegy 1 yard run.

Gavyn Buschkoetter was the sparkler for the ground oriented Lawrence-Nelson (8-1) Raiders. The slippery, hard pounding junior ran for 195 yards on 27 carries and 3 TDs. He also was in on 21 tackles on defense.

Marcus Hegy closed out his career with 138 yards rushing on 31 carries.  Montana  Riecken got 66 yards on the ground and passed for 157 on 10 completions on 15 attempts. . Glue handed junior Jon Christensen caught four Riecken passes for 82 yards, and all were  tough circus type catches.

Marcus Hegy and Jayden Vetick, the two senior players closed out their year with a strong showing. Besides leading the rushing attack, Hegy  had 13 tackle and TFL.  Vetick had 6 tackles to go along with 3 receptions and 35 yards on offense.

For the LDNE  they will put away their Maroon, Gold, and White uniforms for the last time.  Next season will be a new name, new colors and a new mascot.  They  finish the year with a 5-4 record.

Lawrence-Nelson advances to the quarterfinals of the D-2 playoffs and will pack the bags and prepare for the long journey to Wynot.

Oakland-Craig Blasts Omaha Brownell-Talbot in First Round of Playoffs

The Oakland-Craig Knights took on Omaha Brownell-Talbot last Friday in the first round of football playoffs. O-C easily handled Brownell-Talbot, defeating them 40-7.

“The guys did a great job of coming out and setting the tone. We were able to score on our first three possessions and that really got us off to a good start,” Joe Anderson, OC Head Football Coach stated. “OBT really loaded the box and tried to stop our running game, we were able to connect on some shots down the field that softened them up, which allowed us to get our running game going.”

This Friday night, Oakland-Craig takes on Gibbon at 6:30 p.m. in Gibbon.

“This week we will need a great week of preparation. Gibbon has big physical line (average 260 pounds) and potential all-state caliber kids at the QB, RB, and WR positions. The boys are excited for the challenge, and we are looking forward to the road trip out there,” Anderson said.

Go Knights!!

Oakland-Craig Beats Wisner-Pilger and 1995 OC Champs Honored

The Oakland-Craig Knights ended regular season with a huge victory over Wisner-Pilger 54-12. They take on Brownell-Talbot in the first round of playoffs tomorrow night, in Oakland at 7:00 p.m. Let’s cheer on the Knights to a victory!

“Overall it was a good win for senior night. I felt we came out and played well early. Our offensive line did a good job of establishing our running game. As the game went on that really opened up some big plays for us in the passing game,” OC Head Coach Joe Anderson said.

“We came out and played very flat in the 3rd quarter. Wisner did a good job of exposing some of our weaknesses. We have to fix those this week before the playoffs start. Our kids are looking forward to playing in front of the home crowd again. Brownell Talbot will be bringing a good football team to town, and we will have to play a  solid game to advance.”

The 1995 Oakland-Craig Championship team was honored at half-time. OC’s head coach, Joe Anderson, was also a member of that team from twenty years ago.
