Battle Creek Hands Oakland-Craig First Loss of Season

Battle Creek easily handled the Oakland-Craig Knights last Friday in Oakland, downing the Knights 41-12.

“As a team we were disappointed with the way we played. We knew is was going to take a great effort on our part to beat a team like Battle Creek, stated O-C Head Coach Joe Anderson. “They are a big physical team that wore us down as the game went on.”

Battle Creek held Oakland-Craig to 226 yards in total offense, while they racked up 500 yards. Defensively, Connor Thiele lead the way with eight tackles, followed by Cole Mitchell and Hos Smith with five each.

“This week we have to get back to the basics and really improve on our techniques and fundamentals. I  felt we were very sloppy in many of those areas.” said Coach Anderson. “This was only one game and our team goals are very much still intact, but it is very important that we learn from this game and make the corrections so we can continue to improve.

The Knights are on the road this Friday, looking to add another win to their record against the Tekamah-Herman Tigers. Kick-off is at 7:00 p.m. Go Knights!!

Lady Cougars Lose Heartbreaking Opening Match

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

It was a heartbreaking evening for the Lady Cougars as they lost their opening match to West Point-Beemer in five sets  The two teams were evenly matched with close contests in each set.  West Point won the opening set with a 25-22 score.  LDNE took the second and third 27-25 and 25-17.  The Cadets recovered to take the fourth set 25-22.  In the speed round WP-B came out on top 15-12.

Lexie Bacon opened the season by serving an ace in set one.  The set showed the equality of teams as two points was the biggest lead of either team  during the first half of he game.  The Cadets made a break away as they ran off five straight points to take a 16-11 lead.  A kill by Mickayla Petersen put Brianne Haskell at the service line with a 13-17 deficit.  The senior outside hitter was able to tie the score with the help of Kelly Wakeley who had a block and kill bringing the game to a 17-17 score.   With the score tied at 19, the Cadets pushed the score to 23-19 before giving up the serve.  The Cougars manage three more points , but could not keep the Cadets from getting two.

The second set opened badly for the Maroon.  They trailed 8-2 before battling back to take the set.  Kelly Wakeley served the team to within three points.    On Brianne Haskell’s service a kill by Tessie Collins tied the score at 12. and a block by Mickayla P made it 14-12.  The visitors were able to strike back and took a 19-16 lead .  They continued to have a two point cushion and were three points from a win. With a side out Lexie Bacon served up an ace and spurred the team to a one point lead, 23-22.   The game went to extra points after ending 25-25.  Tessie C was at service when the Cougars gained a two point lead for a 27-25 win.

The Cadets were shaken and the third set opened with Northeast jumping out to a 6-0 lead as Bacon served two aces and a big kill by Haskell and a block by Collins.  The lead was expanded to 17-7 by the end of Wakeley’s service.  She had an ace and Haskell chipped in with a kill and block.  A kill by Madie Ronnfeldt made it 18-8.  The wheels of the romp came off as a service error turned the ball over to WP-B who had runs of 6 and 3 to pull within two points, 19-17.  Haskell served out the match and with the help of two kills by Wakeley and a block by Collins Northeast won 25-17.

The Cougars had the momentum and sped to a 5-0 lead in game four.  The Cadets tied the score at 8-8 and went onto gain a two point advantage that they kept  except for ties at 15 and 19 points.  After pulling up to the Cadets at 19 the Cougars quickly found themselves  down by four, 23-19.  WP-B  used a strong front line attack to finish off a 25-22 win.

In the fifth set,  LDNE gained 4-1 lead, but the set quickly turned into teams trading service with the score tied a 9, 10, and 11 points.  The Cougars had an untimely service error to give the Cadets a 12-11 lead.  They served out the game for a 15-11 win.

Oakland-Craig Downs Fremont Bergan in Season Opener

The Oakland-Craig Knights came back from a 6-0 half-time score to defeat Fremont Bergan 22-6

“We did not play as discipline as we would have liked, but you have to like the end result. It was a great team win,” stated Joe Anderson, Oakland-Craig Head Football Coach. “We had way too many penalties and turnovers, but solid defense really allowed us to overcome those mental mistakes.  I thought we played very physical on the defensive side of the ball.”

Leading the way defensively was Hos Smith with 12 tackles followed by Connor Thiele with seven. Tommy Nelson had six tackles and one fumble recovery.

The offense struggled, but managed to get the job done.

“Offensively we had a lot of opportunities but failed to cash in on many of them. However, I like the way our kids stayed focused and stuck with the game plan,” said Anderson. “We were able to wear Bergan down a little bit in the 4th quarter and got our running game going and put it away.”

The first game of the season shows where the Knights excel and the areas that need more work to become a better, stronger team.

“This game really showed some of the things that we need to improve on.

We will play a very physical and discipline Battle Creek team who is rated in the top 4 so we have to make sure we have a great week of practice this week,” stated Anderson.

The Knights take on Battle Creek tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. Come and show your support and cheer on the Knights to victory!

Northeast’s Cougars rolled to a 84-60 win in their first game of the 2015 season.  They jumped out to a 28-6 first period lead an stretched it to a 30 point lead by half time.  A couple of long scores by Jon Christiansen in the fourth quarter sewed up the win.

“There were a lot of positives that we got out of this game,” said Coach Dan Maresh.  “Montana Riecken did a great job of running the offense in his second start. He had 433 totals yards with 304 yards rushing and 129 yards passing.  He hit Jon Christiansen with two TD passes.  Jon had a good all-around game with 97 rushing yards.  Marcus Hegy got back into action after being out last season and rushed for 138 yards and scored three times, once on an interception.  I was pleased how the offensive line played.
They were very physical.”

The defense was led by their line backers, Bren Shatto and Marcus Hegy. Shatto had 8 solo and 2 assisted tackles, one sack and a TFL.  Hegy had 6 solo, 2 assisted tackles to go with an pick-six.  Tyler Hardeman topped the line with 3 solos.  Montana Riecken has an interception.  Jayden Vetick had two sacks in his four stops.  Benny Estrada had 3 solos and a sack.  Jon Christiansen recorded 4 solos. Tyler Kroger had 2 solos and teamed up with Nick Ronnfeldt on a TFL.

The coach was pleased how they D held their ground  game in check.  The Patriots only gained 150 rushing yards. “They gave us some problems with their passing scheme.  They have some tall athletes and our corners did well, but the third receiver gave us problems.”   Parkview had 5 TD passes and 388 receiving yards.

For the game LDNE had 550 yards on the ground.  Riecken carried 23 times for 304 yards and 6 touchdowns.  Marcus Hegy  had 138 yards and 2 TDs. Jon Christiansen carried 9 time for 97 yards. Jacob Whitaker and Benny Estrada each gained 5 yards while Dean Gibbs added 1.

The Cougars will have a home game this week.  They will take on pre-season number one rated Humphrey Saint Francis.  The Flyers will have a new tailback this season, but Coach Maresh expects them to continue their brand of power football.

LDNE Football Season Preview

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

With a new season under way Head Coach Dan Maresh is optimistic about his 2015 team.  The sixth year Head Coach is coming off a 2-6 season and a four game losing streak but is upbeat about his squad.  “Our low numbers have given us the opportunity to get everybody some reps in the varsity games.  Now is the time to use that experience and turn it into a positive and play as a unit.

After the upset of the playoff team from B-R the Cougars dropped their last four games. “We did not get better as the season went on.  I relate that to the practices because we were not able to push ourselves.  This year were are better from top to bottom.  There is competition for positions and our scout teams are much better.”

With five starters back the Cougars have the basis for a good team, but must replace their backfield.   Chevy Henneman closed out his career with a senior  season of  1753 total yards.  He rushed for 1103 and passed for 650 as he accounted for 19 TDs.  Dylan Hardeman  scored 11 TDs as he rushed for 673  yards and caught 15 passes.

Junior Montana Riecken moves from wide out to run the offense this year.  He made one start while Henneman recovered from mono in 2014.  He ran for 241 yards as the Cougars took a  40-14 win over Parkview.  “He’s a much better player this year as he has put on 20 pounds and knows the offense well,” declared he coach.

Marcus Hegy will be the running back for the Cougars.  Hegy had a solid season as an end during his sophomore year when the Cougars made to the second round of the playoffs.  An ALC injury wiped out his junior year.  “He getting better every practice.  He has the toughness to be a good back for us,” said Maresh.  Sophomore Dean Gibbs is a back up for Hegy.

The Cougars will field a larger line than they have in the past.  230 pound Cole Christoffersen anchors the line at center.  Home School student Tyler Kroger weighs in at 200 and plays one guard while Bren Shatto plays the other.  Coach Maresh has a pair of 200 pounders as reserves with junior Tyler Hardeman and freshman Seth Totten.

The coach looks for senior Jayden Vetick and freshman Nick Ronnfeldt to start at tight end.  Joey O’Connor and Dustin Burgett are backups.

Jon Christiansen returns at wide out.  He caught 10 passes for 170 yards and 2 TDS.  He added another 370 yards rushing.   Jacob Whittaker snagged 7 passes last year. Track speedster Benny Estrada is out for football for the first time.

Coach Maresh is hoping to play a more aggressive style of defense this year.  Christoffersen, Vetick, and Ronnfeldt will be the down line men.  Shatto and Hegy are the linebackers with Riecken, Christiansen and Burgett making up the secondary.

Northeast opens the season at Lincoln Parkview on August 28.  The Patriots were 4-4 in 2014.  They have a new QB, but all district running back Isaac Branding is back after a 574 yard season.  The defense is experienced with two good line backers.

Northeast has their home opener against Humphrey St. Francis.  A perennial power with 27 playoff appearances the Flyers are  coming off a 10-1 season with their lone loss to the eventual state champion in the playoffs.  They are reloading this season, but have quarterback Damien Baumgart returning after throwing for 9 TDs in 2014. and linebacker Cole Wemhoff an All-State candidate at linebacker.

Osmond has suffered through two season plagued by injuries.  They were 3-5 in 2014 as they relied on a lot of frosh and sophomore players.  QB Brent Johnson missed several games  but ran for 506 yards and passes for 232.  Caleb Krohn ran for 643 yards.  280 pound Max Frank is a Top 10 Talent in the offensive line.

After an open date the Cougars start district play on September 25 at Bancroft-Rosalie.  B-R is coming off a 5-4 season.  They will feature 160 pound sophomore Jacob Zuhlke at running back and all district tight end Dayne Wortman .

Allen  was 4-4 in 2014.  The Eagles have 195 pound Taylor Krumm to carry the ball, but only one returning starter in the line.

Winside broke a losing streak as they beat LDNE  52-26 last year.  They finished 1-7 and start 2015 with a new coach.

Emerson-Hubbard is the Homecoming game on October 16.  The Pirate were 5-4 lastn year.  They have  two experienced starters in Haberman and Ostrand to carry the ball  two big  blockers in the Parker -Diaz brothers to block for them.

Wynot is favored to win the district.  They won six of their nine games in 2015.  Cody Stratman, the Class D long jump champion, gives them one of the best athlete in district.  He rushed for 1984 yards and 30 TDs last year.

Northeast Track Medals in Three Events

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

Northeast’s track team managed to bring home medals in three events at the State Track Meet held in Omaha last weekend.  The girls tallied 6 points for a 32nd place finish while the boys took 41st with 4 points.

Darcey Simonsen took third last year in the discus.   It looked like she was going to move up to the silver position until the final throw.  Darcey had a throw of 115 feet  3 inches to cement her position in second place with one throw to go.  Scribner-Snyder’s Peters, the classes top thrower this spring, got an three inch lead on her in the final throw to claim the silver medal.

Things did not go as well for Abby Peterson,.  The junior had been battling respiratory illness for over two weeks.  She was wore down a little and managed a twelfth place finish with a toss of  101 feet 10inches.

The third girl qualifier was Kelly Wakeley.  She had a scratch on her opening jump.  She long jumped 15 feet 2 3/4 inches on her second try and finished in the eighteenth place.  Coach Hosch said, ” I was so excited to have Kelly return to State- even though it was in a different event.   I am confident she can return next year.”

It was a shaky start for Jon Christiansen in the triple jump.  The sophomore opened with a 38 foot jump,  but was over two feet behind the board.  After another sub-par leap, his third attempt in the prelims got him into the finals.  It measured over 40 feet.

“I am  so happy that Jon finally got off a good jump,” said Coach Hosch.  “I am sure the excitement of the whole experience affected his approach.  We kept edging him forward in the finals.”

The coach’s advice propelled Jon into a medal position as he opened the finals with a career tying best of 41 feet 8 inches.  He moved up three places and finished with a sixth place medal.

The Cougars’ 400M runners faced a tough challenge as they both drew lane eight.  With the staggered start they have no runners in sight to set their pace.  “It is going to be really tough out there,” said Chevy Henneman.  The senior was at the lead with 200 meters to go.  In a photo finish Chevy ended up in fourth place .  His time of 53.22 missed making the finals by .13 seconds.

Brianne Haskell gave it her all.  “I was running with everybody, until the final curve and then they pulled away,”  She finished in eighth with a time of 1:06.16.

Dylan Hardeman ran the 800M on Saturday.  He finished tenth in his section with a time of 2:13.54.

The 4×400 Relay closed out the meet.  Northeast got strong legs from Jon Christiansen, Benny Estrada,  Dylan Hardeman, and Chevy Henneman and improved their season best by over five seconds.  It was a three team race in their heat with the Cougars taking third in 33:36..21.  All three teams earned medals with LDNE taking eighth place.

Coach Hosch commented. “We really worked on relay exchanges during the week for the 4×4 and it paid off.  Chevy really ran a stellar leg.  He pushed his first 200 faster than normal to keep contact with the leaders and still managed to finish strong.”

Hosch added, “It was a nice way for the three seniors, Chevy, Dylan, and Darcey, to go out.”

Cougars Qualify Eight for State Track

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

Cougar Track and Field will have eight representatives at the State Track Meet next Friday at Burke Stadium in Omaha.  “It was a very competitive meet as the teams had to battle a brutal wind,” said Coach Hosch. The Lady Cougars finished in third place with 71 points.  They trailed Allen who scored 124 and Wynot with 86  points.  The boys finished in fourth with 55 points. Wausau was the winner with 133 points followed by Randolph with 84.

Three Athletes are making a return trip to Burke Stadium.  Darcey Simonsen is going back for the third time.  She placed third last year in the discus..  Chevy Henneman and Kelly Wakeley are competing in different events this year.  Chevy moves up from the 100M to the 400 M.  Kelly switches from the triple jump to the long jump.

The girls got a big boost from the discus competition.  Northeast throwers took the top two positions.  Abby Peterson was a surprise winner.  She had been battling illness all week, but came through with a personal best by eight feet to take the gold.  Her winning mark was 119 fee 3 inches.  Darcey Simonsen took the other qualifying position with a toss of 113 feet 6 inches.

Brianne Haskell fought the wind and a B-R runner down the stretch in the 400 M dash.   She got the edge with fifteen meters left and held on to place second place in 1:07.1. After sitting out last year because of a basketball injury it was a sweet feeling to qualify for the first time.   In the boys’ race, Chevy Henneman found himself  behind coming off the final curve.  He battled to the lead coming down the stretch, loss it, and surged at the end to take a photo finish win in a slow time for him of 55.4.

Jon Christiansen made up for the disappointment of taking third in the triple jump as a freshman.  He had a career best of 41 feet 8 3/4 inches to place second to one of the best jumpers in the state from Wausau.

Dylan Hardeman raced to a second place finish in the 800 M run.  It was a three man race to finish and the senior had the fortitude to claim the second qualifying position with a time of 2:13.2.
