Oakland-Craig Pounds Wisner-Pilger, Moving on to State Playoffs

“I thought Wisner came out and played with a lot more fire than we did. They did a good job of attacking us. We did not play with the aggressive style that we had played with lately,” said Head Coach Joe Anderson. “This week will give us a chance to fix some of those things. However, our defense did come up with some big plays before half that really opened up the game.”

Nick Arlt led the offense again with six touchdowns, five were rushing and one was the result of an interception.

Leading the way defensively with eight tackles each were Tommy Nelson, Cody Mace, Michael Fischer, Bryce Uhing, Ted Maline, Mitch Smith, Justin Smith, Joel Johnson and Conner Thiele.

O-C now enters the state play off rounds, beginning with Fillmore Central Friday night at 6:00 in Oakland.

“From here on out we will see nothing but really good football teams, with the playoffs going to 16 teams, this is like a 2nd round game. Fillmore central is a big physical team that starts 11 seniors, so it will definitely be a big test for us. We are looking forward to playing in front of our home crowd again,” stated Anderson.

Cougar Season Ends With Loss to Wynot

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

Northeast’s Cougars season came to an end with a 58-44 loss to Wynot.  With as 2-6 record there will be no playoff games this season.

It was a tough year for the football team as they finished with just nine players suited up for the final game.  They lost Marcus Hegy before the season started to a leg injury.  Jon Christiansen suffered a stress fracture in the Allen game.    Bren Shatto and Charles Webb missed the last game.

Lyons-Decatur got off to a great start against Wynot.  They took the opening kickoff and marched down the field.  Chevy Henneman capped the drive with a one yard run and added the PAT to give the Cougars an 8-0 lead.

The Blue Devils would control the rest of the half.  They would score the next forty-six points.  LDNE had trouble controlling Wynot’s Cody Stratman who rushed for 211 yards on just 11 carries.  He had a73 yard TD score.

“We did not play well in the first half,”  said Coach Maresh.  “We had a rash of penalties that were drive killers.”  Northeast had 8 penalties for fifty-five yard in the game.

After (6-2) Wynot scored on their initial possession of the second half, the Cougars tried to make the most of what was left of the 2014 season.  LDNE  scored 36 points and stopped the running clock as they pulled to within fourteen point of the Blue Devils.

Dylan Hardeman broke a 50 yard run on Lyons-Decatur’s first drive.  This cut the lead to 52-14.

Chevy Henneman added eight points as he ran in from 30 yards out and punctuated it with a PAT.

In the fourth period LDNE started with a pass-catch combo of Henneman to Montana Riecken which netted a 36 yard touchdown.  This cut the lead to thirty and restored regular timing procedures.

Senior quarterback Chevy Henneman would cap off his career with two more scores.  He finished a drive with a five yard run.  His final score would come on a 55 yard romp.  With two more PATs he finished with 32 points for the night.

“We played much better in the second half,” said Coach Maresh.  “Wynot kept most of their starters in the game so we were not just scoring on subs.  I am proud of how the team kept playing hard.”

For the two seniors on the team they went out in style with great efforts.  Chevy Henneman rushed for 298 yards on 32 carries.  He passed for another 59 yards.  Dylan Hardeman rushed for 11 yards on 17 carries.  He led the defense with 10 tackles including 1 TFL.

Wynot rushed for 282 yards on 39 carries with 6 scoring runs.  They passed 22 times with 15 completions for 196 yards  and one score. They had 478 total yards. Northeast countered with 409 rushing yards and 59 passing yards for a total of 468 yards.

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

The Lady Cougars ended their regular season with a pair of East Husker Conference wins.  In the home finally they bested Pender 3-1 on October 21.  This past Monday, they beat Tekamah-Herman in another 3-1 match.  The wins pull the girls’ record to 13-17.
They finished with a 5-7 mark in EHC games.  The Cougars posted a 9-12 mark in all matches against EHC opponents.

The girls will be the number two seed in the sub districts next week at Randolph.  They will play the winner of the Bancroft-Rosalie/Winside contest in the  8:00 P.M. game on November 3.  If they win they will face the winner of number one seed Wynot and bottom seed Wausa the next night.

The season should  have prepared the girls for the tournament .They have faced only two D-2 schools this season.  Of their thirty games they have been playing larger schools the twenty-eight of the matches.  The Cougars have had eight matches with D-1 school and ten with both C-1 and C-2 division teams.

The Cougars cranked out 15 Ace serves against Pender.    Lexie Bacon led the way with four and Tessie Collins had three.

Northeast also got a strong attack from Brianne Haskell and Kelly Wakeley.  Wakeley had a team-high 16 kills.  Haskell finished in double figures with 11.

The (7-20) Pendragons  came back after dropping the first game 25-18 to claim a 25-23 win.  The Cougars shut the door on their win hope with decisive 25-15 and 25-17 wins in games three and four.

“We talked about starting fast, and we accomplished that. Our offense was able to put points on the board early and often.  We really challenged our defense to shut down their running game. Their quarterback was 2nd in class C-2 in rushing,” said Coach Joe Anderson. “I thought we played assignment sound football and really rallied to the football and held him to minimal yards.”

Nick Arlt broke a single game rushing record, 16 carries for a total of 362 yards and six touchdowns, and he didn’t play in the second half. Tommy Nelson led defensively, having 16 tackles.

“One of our goals was to win our district, this game allowed us to accomplish that. This week’s game is very important in that a win would give us a home game in the first round of the playoffs,” Joe stated.

The next game is tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. at Wisner. Go cheer on the Knights!

Mistakes Costly for Cougars

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

“We were our own worse enemy.  Fumbles and penalties did us in.”  Coach Dan Maresh’s comments show his dismay at how his young team played in a 46-8 loss to Emerson-Hubbard.

Northeast took the opening kickoff and marched down the field.  The drive came to a halt with a fumble at the one yard line.  The fumble set the tone for the night as two plays later the Pirates scored on a 77 yard run.

A second fumble produced a scoop and score for Emerson -Hubbard.  Four penalties stalled the offense as they  set the Cougars back 43 yards.

Dylan Hardeman’s touchdown run and PAT by Montana Riecken did not come until the fourth quarter.   By that time the Pirates had their commanding lead of forty-six points.

The Cougars amassed 290 yard during the game.  They got 188 on the ground and added another 102 through the air.  Emerson-Hubbard rushed for 315 of their 349 total yards.

Dylan Hardeman picked up 101 of the rushing yards with a long run of 35 yards.  The Pirates kept Chevy Henneman under control as he was limited to 92 yards on 26 carries.

Henneman passed for 102  yards on 6 completions.  John Whitaker, Dylan Hardeman, Montana Riecken and Jayden Vetick were on the receiving end.

Chevy Henneman led the defense with 8 tackles.  Montana Riecken and  Tyler Hardeman had 7.  Tyler Hardeman and Joey O’Connor shared a sack.

The Cougars will take a 2-5 record into the season’s final game.  They will host Wynot who clinched the District-1 title with a win over Bancroft-Rosalie last week.  The Blue Devils have a 5-2 record and are undefeated  in district play.  Emerson-Hubbard has a 4-3 record after their win over the Cougars.
