Peaceful Sunset

After all of the storms so many people have endured through the month of June, this sunset picture I took the first day of July, I found very comforting. I hope you do too! Hopefully, July will bring everyone a break from severe weather, and bring peace to all, and a much more enjoyable summer!

Rainfall Amount for the Month of June

It has been reported to Kat Country Hub from two local farmers on the rainfall amount for the month of June in the Oakland area. One farmer reports 18 1/2 inches, one reports 20 inches! I wonder if that is a record?
Housing Leaders Meet in Burt County

Leaders, developers and representatives from across NE were in Lyons on June 19th for the Burt County Housing Summit, hosted by Burt County Economic Development Corporation and Nebraska Investment Finance Authority. The purpose of the summit was to inform housing developers of the opportunities available in Burt County, and match those opportunities with the appropriate financing programs.
Keith Carl, with Hanna:Keelan Associates spoke to the group about the results compiled in the updated Burt County Housing Study. The results found that Burt County will need to provide 108 new housing units – 72 owner, 36 rental – by 2019. Each community’s needs were determined by surveys and face-to-face meetings.
Steve Peregrine, with Nebraska Investment Finance Authority (NIFA), then talked about the financing programs that NIFA provides. Along with NIFA, representatives from USDA, HUD and the NE Department of Economic Development all gave a brief report on financial programs that developers can use to help Burt County achieve their housing goals
Pam Thomsen, Director of Three Rivers Housing Corporation, spoke to the funding her organization received to construct three new affordable homes. These homes will be built in Lyons because the City of Lyons was prepared by having clear ownership of three buildable lots that they offered to donate to anyone willing to build a home. One of the lots already has been spoken for, leaving two available for qualified individuals.
After hearing from the housing experts, the group boarded a bus for a tour of Burt County. Those serving as tour guides for their communities included: Pam Thomsen and Brooks Larsen – Lyons, Matt Connealy – Decatur, Kevin Brenneis – Tekamah, Denise Gilliland and Sue Beckner – Oakland. All communities in Burt County have available lots within the community that would be suitable for affordable housing.
Patty Plugge, Executive Director of Burt County Economic Development Corporation, reported that since the Summit, she has had contact with two separate housing development companies interested in pursuing affordable housing projects in Burt County. Plugge said she will continue to work with Three Rivers Housing and any other developers, and hopes to have good news to report concerning this soon.

Oakland’s Party in the Park is Thurs., July 3rd. An update to the previous information is: Water Fights are at 8:00 p.m. Kids are to bring their own squirt guns and have a watery blast! Everyone is invited to attend. Come on, come all!!
4-H Workshop at Creative Connections

The beautiful Creative Connections Studio in Oakland was the appropriate site for the Creative Color Collage 4-H Workshop last week.
Jan Cline-Zimmerman helped the 4-H members experience the opportunity to use tissue paper, glue and cardboard to create a lovely design.

Eunice A. Krusemark, 87, of Lincoln, NE formerly of Pender, NE passed away Sunday, June 29, 2014 surrounded by her family at The Monarch in Lincoln, NE. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 3, 2014 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender, NE; with Pastor Miles Ruch officiating. Visitation will be held 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the family present 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Pender, NE. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery in Pender, NE. There will be a memorial service held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 7, 2014 at Southland Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Pender, NE
Eunice was born on March 21, 1927 in Bloomfield, Nebraska, the daughter of Carl and Anna (Bentjen) Wennekamp. She attended and graduated from Thurston High School. On June 1, 1947, Eunice was united in marriage to Willis Krusemark at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender, Nebraska. To this union five children were born: Leon, Tim, Yvonne, Cindy and Nancy. The couple farmed near Pender and Emerson before moving into Pender in 1981. On September 24, 1998, Willis died. In 2000, Eunice moved to Lincoln, Nebraska to be closer to her children.
She was involved in church circles at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender and later at Southwood Lutheran Church in Lincoln. Her family remembers her famous foods including: Texas Sheet Cake, M&M Birthday Cake, Cinnamon Rolls, Crepe Pancakes and her dill pickles just to name a few. Eunice enjoyed her gardening and her flowers. Most of all she loved her family.
Eunice is survived by her sons, Leon (Sharon) Krusemark of Denton, Ne Tim (Rita) Krusemark of Lincoln, NE; daughters, Yvonne Krusemark of North Richland Hills, TX, Cindy (Jim) Jones and Nancy (Tony) Pekny both of Lincoln, NE, sister Evelyn (Willis) Kahl of Wakefield, NE, 11 grandchildren: Brandon (Becky) Krusemark, Kali (Clint) Bruna, Corey (Kristin) Brown, Trent (Melody) Brown, Eric (Emily) Pekny, Matthew Pekny, Ryan (Candra) Pekny, Sarah Krusemark, Jalen Krusemark, Cameron Jones and Brandon Jones and 18 great grandchildren: Rachel, Rebecca, Nathan and Abigal Brown, Meeka and Damon Brown, Chancie, Royanne, Beau, Berkley and Willis Pekny, MaKayla and Landon Almond, Colton and Dannon Pekny, Avery and Noah Pekny and Sara Kicak and a Bruna baby on the way.
She is preceded in death by her husband Willis, a granddaughter Elizabeth, parents Carl and Anna, three brothers Otto, Marvin and Harold Wennekamp.

Ruby C. Duncan, 84 of Thurston NE

Ruby C. Duncan, 84, of Thurston, Nebraska died on Monday, June 30, 2014 at the Heritage of Emerson Nursing Home. Funeral services for Ruby will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender; Pastor Miles Ruch will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender. Burial will be in the Rosehill Cemetery of Pender. Memorial are suggested to the family for future designation. Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home of Pender is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation.
Ruby was born on August 6, 1929 in Wakefield, Nebraska, the daughter of Herman and Edna (Lawton) Kai. She attended school at Pender and was united in marriage to Kenneth LeRoy Duncan on August 27, 1949 in North Bend, Nebraska. To this union three children were born: Candace, Kevin and Jim. The couple lived on a farm northeast of Thurston, later moving into Thurston in 1956. Ruby was a member of the Thurston American Legion Auxiliary and the Happy Hour Club. She enjoyed reading, ceramics, gardening, baking and playing cards and having coffee with her friends. Most of all she enjoyed her family.
Ruby is survived by a son Kevin Duncan(Severt Philleo) of Dallas, TX, Candi (Leo) Richtermeier of Ponca, NE, daughter-in-law Adell Duncan of Norfolk, NE, a sister Sibyl Kai of Bancroft, NE, sister-in-law Connie Kai of Omaha, NE, brothers: Paul (Rosemary) Kai of Oakland, NE, Glenn (Roberta) Kai of Bancroft, NE, Robert (Glenda) Kai of Lincoln, NE, August (Janet) Kai of Aurelia, IA and a brother-in-law Marvin Duncan of Hubbard, NE. She is also survived by six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband LeRoy, son Jim, an infant daughter, brothers Floyd and Chuck Kai and sisters Alyce Schleusener and Annabelle Kai.
