Hassebrook Releases Plan for Rural Economic Development

Chuck Hassebrook

Chuck Hassebrook

The day after the primary election, Chuck Hassebrook, Democratic nominee for Governor, has released his plan for rural economic development.

Hassebrook’s plan for rural economic development includes beefing up the state’s support for small businesses and beginning farmers and ranchers, renewable energy development, job training, and community development.

“I’ve spent my entire career dedicated to strengthening the small town and rural way of life. I’m proud today to share with you my plan to create economic opportunity in small town and rural Nebraska,” Hassebrook stated.

Hassebrook spent 36 years at the Center for Rural Affairs, 17 of those years as the Executive Director, and helped 10,000 small businesses in Nebraska with loans and planning, training, and technical assistance.

Hassebrook says that he sees “many of the same issues that plague rural Nebraska in our urban communities as well. The bottom line is that to allow our communities to continue growing, the state has to make some changes to its policies and become more of a partner in economic development. As Governor, I’ll lead the charge, and move Nebraska forward.”

Steve Buttress of Kearney, who previously served as the Director of the Nebraska Department of Economic Development under then Governor Ben Nelson supports the plan, and says that “Chuck’s plan will deliver, it will make a difference, and it will build a better economy. It’s a blueprint that will work across the state, small town and large, Omaha to Scottsbluff.”

·         Foster small business development and new farm and ranch enterprises

o   Expand the Small Business and Beginning Farmer and Rancher tax credit

o   Increase small business training and technical assistance

o   Create a centralized website and hotline for Nebraska entrepreneurs

o   Remove the anti-small business regulatory bias

·         Improve and expand job training programs

o   Create a partnership between learning institutions and employers

o   Encourage dual credit classes for high school students

o   Expand state funded apprenticeships in workforce shortage areas

·         Support wind development, Nebraska’s corn ethanol industry, and develop a strategy for next generation biofuels

o   Develop Nebraska’s world class wind resource by creating a state production tax credit and building transmission lines

o   Champion Nebraska ethanol by expanding our local markets and keeping our state at the forefront of next generation biofuels.

·         Create a new partnership between the state of Nebraska and small towns to foster community development

o   Community grants

o   Loan forgiveness for rural health professionals

o   Planning and technical assistance to small towns and rural communities

o   Protect and more effectively leverage state funds for workforce housing

New Pool to Open in Mid-June

The opening of the new Lyons pool has been delayed until mid-June, “The weather hasn’t cooperated much this winter and they need a couple more weeks to get everything completed,” stated Lyons Mayor Andy Fuston.

There are a few things that the mayor and city council asked to be taken care of.  “Standard construction things, it is normal. The decking is getting poured now and they are working on their punch list,” Fuston said. A punch list is items the city, engineer and general contractor pointed out to be fixed.

If the time frame changes for any reason, Kat Country Hub will report it.

Proud to Serve on Election Day

Frelon Danielson and Betty Hanna are two of many people who serve on the Burt County Election Board, assisting assisting voters of Oakland for many years. “I have been on the board for close to 60 years,” stated Frelon. Betty isn’t sure how many years she has served, “but I have done it for several years,” Betty said.

They can remember when the votes were counted at the polling place, the Oakland City Auditorium. “They were counted on the stage,” Betty stated. She is referring to the stage at the auditorium. “Now they have machines that do the counting,” Frelon said.

They arrive before the polls open at 8:00 a.m. and don’t stop working until after the polls close at 8:00 p.m. “I pick the ballots up the day before election at the courthouse then take them back to Tekamah once the polls are closed,” Frelon stated.

They both commented that not many people had come to vote. “There wasn’t as much to vote on locally, so maybe that is why,” Betty said. Those running for Oakland City Council and the Oakland-Craig School Board automatically moved to the November election.

ARLENE A. WEATHERLY, 87 years, of Tekamah, Nebraska, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair, Nebraska.

Arlene was born March 25, 1927, to Albert and Violet (Wallin) Hammer in Bradish, Nebraska. She grew up on a farm in the Albion, Nebraska, area and graduated from Albion High School in 1944.

She met her future husband, Mack Weatherly, when he was working on her parent¹s farm. It was her interest in sports that brought them together and their first date was to a football game. October 12, 1946, they eloped to Marysville, Kansas, and got married. Three daughters, Karen, Cindi and Tracy were born to this union.

She also loved to knit, sew and spend time at her daughter’s greenhouse. She looked forward to her dinner outings with “the girls”. Arlene was very devoted to her family and will be remembered for the wonderful cooking the family enjoyed.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and husband.
