Mary Jean Johnson, 86 of Omaha, NE


Mary Jean Johnson was born to D. Roy and Elizabeth “Beth” (Cooper) Way on April 11, 1927, in San Diego, California.  She passed away April 4, 2014, in the home she loved and lived in for over 50 years.

On March 4, 1949 she married Russell V. Johnson, the love of her life, in Bancroft, NE. They lived most of their lives in Omaha, Nebraska.  Mary Jean was Head of the Music Department at Tech High School in the Omaha School District for many years.

Mary Jean Johnson loved her family, had a passion for music and found pleasure in a lively game of “May I?”  She always had an exceptional eye for decorating and fashion.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Russell V. Johnson, a son, Dennis C. Johnson, a granddaughter, Caitlyn E. Johnson, and brother’s in-law Ken Lage and Frank Strupp.

Survivors include her children:  David and Barbara Johnson, O’Fallon, IL; Douglas and Debi Johnson, Henderson, NV; Jill Benz, Omaha, NE; and Richard and Patricia Johnson, Johnston, IA.  One brother and two sisters: Dave and Larie Way, Fremont, NE; Elizabeth (Sis) Lage, Peoria, AZ; and Rhea (Tootie) Strupp, Madison, WI.  Mary Jean also was Grandmother to 10 grandchildren and great grandmother to 6 great grandchildren.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Saturday, April 12, 2014, 1:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Decatur

OPEN HOUSE:  at Mary Jean’s home in Omaha, Friday, April 11, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

BURIAL: Hillcrest Cemetery, Decatur, Nebraska

MEMORIALS: To the family with memorials to be directed at a later date towards a project in Decatur.

Marcella Ruehling, 92, of West Point, Nebraska formerly of Bancroft died on Monday, April 7, 2014 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point, Nebraska.

Funeral services for Marcella will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church near Bancroft, Nebraska; Pastor Ryan Seymore will be officiating.  The visitaiton with the family present will be held on Friday from 3:00 unitl 8:00 p.m. at the Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Bancroft.  Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church.  Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

 

 

 

Lady Cougars Take 4th and Cougars Take 5th Place at Stanton Meet

The outdoor season began for the Northeast Track Teams with a six team meet at Stanton on April 1.  The boys finished in fifth place with 61 points.  The girls scored  64 points and took fourth place.

 

Taylor Fuston got the lone first place for the boys by winning the long jump with a leap of 19 feet 11.25 inches.   The senior also got a fourth place in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.97.  Fuston teamed with Chevy Henneman, Jon Christiansen, and Benny Estrada to win the 400M Relay in 47.0.

 

Chevy Henneman scored in both sprints.  He took fifth in the 100M in 12.04 and third in the 200M in 24.16.

 

David Bishop brought home points in the 400M dash.  He clocked in a 56.31 for second place.

 

Dylan Hardeman scored in the 300M hurdles and 800 M run.  He picked up a fifth place over the barriers with a time of 48.5 and took sixth in the two lapper with a time of 2:23.4.

 

Several freshmen scored points for the team.  Jon Christiansen took third in the triple jump with a mark of 39 feet 7 inches.  Benny Estrada added a fourth in the long jump with a 17 feet 8 inch leap.  Joey O’Connor picked up a fifth in the 3200M run with a time of 12:16.00.  Christiansen, Estrada and Tyler Hardeman teamed with Taylor Fuston to place third in the 1600M Relay.

 

The girls scored well in the field events.  They picked up 44 points before the track events started.

 

Darcey Simonsen led the discus throwers with a winning toss of 111 feet 3 inches.  Together with Vanessa Peterson’s 92 foot throw for third and Abby Peterson’s 89 feet 10 inch effort for fourth Northeast picked up 20 points in the event.

 

In the shot pout the Lady Cougars garnered twelve points.   Libby Henneman placed third with a 31 feet 7 inch heave.  Darcey Simonsen added a fourth with a  30 feet 11 inch toss and Abby Peterson came in fifth with a 29 feet 8 inch throw.

 

In the horizon jumps Kelly Wakeley got third in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump.  Her jumps measured 14 feet 6.5 inches and 33 feet 2 inches.  Madie Ronnfeldt added a fifth in the long jump with a 14 feet 4.75 inch leap.

 

On the track Tessie Collins scored in the 1600M run.  Her ‘6:28.6 clocking brought in a fifth place.

 

Madie Ronnfeldt placed third in the 300M hurdles with a time of 54.47.  There were three placers in the 200 M dash.   Kelley Wakeley  got third in 29.50; Cierra French took fourth in 29.53; and Madie Ronnfeldt was fifth in 29.82.

 

Victoria Maslonka, Libby Henneman, Sophie Hsu and Lena Horak teamed for a sixth in the 400M relay.  Their time was 1″06.52

Betty J. Walker, 91 years, of Tekamah, Nebraska, passed away Monday, April 7, 2014 at the Golden Living Center in Tekamah.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Saturday. April 12th, 2014 at 2:00 pm, at the First Baptist Church in Tekamah.

VISITATION: Friday 5 – 8 pm with family receiving friends from 5-7 pm, at Pelan Funeral Home in Tekamah. Visitation will also be held at the church Saturday one hour prior to service.
