Cold Eggs Never Killed Anyone

By Jennifer Cardinal

I have taken on this season of being a stay at home mom and wife with a sense of purpose … I really do believe that this is exactly where God wants me right now.

So in that spirit , I have obeyed God with a small but never the less a calling to get up early and make my family a hot breakfast and read from the book “Jesus Calling” … I know it may not seem like a big thing but when my bed is all nice and cozy and with fall rolling in and it staying darker longer … being the first one out of bed when I don’t have a time card to punch … really does take a bit of a push … I not bleeding or agonizing or in any sort of pain … but it is an effort on my part.
So with this “gift” that I am giving to my family I guess I sort of imagined everyone would come running downstairs as soon as they could to get their hot breakfast I labored over and just gloat about what a wonderful wife and mother I am. So when I noticed my husband and then my son started coming down later and later each day and it started getting to be a routine that I was serving them cold eggs … it started to get a little under my skin. Not in a big way but just in that little annoying voice that says ” it does not even matter what you do … serving them breakfast is not really any big deal ” .

So I decided to say something … but not really in a direct way but kind of a read-through-the-lines type of way … like “well you must like eating cold eggs because it seems you are just getting later and later every morning.”

Well , my timing sucked. Because for whatever ingenious reasoning I had I decided to say this the morning of my husbands birthday. Now , I did not rant or rave or make a hissy … but you know it was just the “tone” and very soon after I realized I set the tone for the day … on my husband’s birthday.

My husband is not perfect by any means, nor am I , but I can tell you one thing … he is a great man who I am proud of. He tells me I am beautiful , he supports all my decisions , he works hard , he is a dedicated and responsible man and father … I am blessed to have him.

Did I feel a little erked he did not skip down the stairs to eat my hot breakfast singing my praises … well , yes. But luckily , I have a God who allowed me to see how silly and pretty darn critical I was being … so I get up early and I make breakfast … I will continue to do so and I won’t do it for any reason other than it is my small way of giving back to God and to my family. If the eggs are cold when they come down … they will get the picture and realize if they want a hot breakfast they better come down earlier . After all , no one ever died over cold eggs and in the big scheme of things it really does not matter.

We have the power to speak life into others … I am reminded to chose my words and refrain my tongue when it does not serve a higher purpose … I certainly can not do this on my own ability but pressing into God I can. It is a small thing, I know … but the small things all really add up to big things and make our life what it is. I want to , I desire to make those small moments matter … after all my words will have more impact on my family than my eggs.

I am a 44 year old wife, mother, & chiropractor. My family and I recently moved across the country from NV to CT for a job opportunity for my husband. I sold my practice and am currently on a sabbatical as we settle in. I am now taking biblical studies and have rediscovered a passion for writing.

Editorial Opinion

Let us never forget, we are only human. Judging others when not walking in their shoes is the same as gossiping. Those that judge and speak out of turn, no more wear a halo than those they are speaking so poorly of. We are the makers of our own destruction and success. Caring people will opt for success, hoping to leave a better world for their loved ones. Where do you stand?

Kats’ Korner: Moseman’s, Grandma Sundquist, bullying and abuse

I had the pleasure of visiting with Willmer and Millie Moseman of Oakland today in a local establishment.

I have adored them for many years. I rented a house from them approximately 28 years ago for Justin and I to live in. The house was on north Oakland Avenue, where Willmer and Millie live now. Not the same house though. After Justin and I moved out, they tore that house down and built a new house that they have lived in ever since.

The house I lived in was very nice, just older. We loved it. It was also in an ideal location. Being on Main Street has its’ advantages, as it does now. I seem to like living on Main Street.

I remember how I came to know Willmer and Millie. My Grandma Sundquist knew them and had suggested I rent the house from them.

I didn’t know then that they would become good friends of mine for years to come. I am very honored to know them. They are very kind and caring people. Oakland is blessed to have such good individuals in the community!

Speaking of Grandma Sundquist, I was out on one of my many walks I enjoy during the warm summer days, when I walked by Grandma’s former residence. Now, Michael Nissen lives there. He is taking great care of the house.

He has painted it, and is having what I believe to be a garage, built on the property. Grandma’s other garage was very small, but so was her car!

I am glad to see the property and house are so well maintained. Every summer, I, along with all of the other grandchildren, looked forward to a week at grandma’s house.

We couldn’t all be there at the same time, of course, but every moment there was precious.

I didn’t even mind being sick because grandma would take me to her house so the other three kids wouldn’t get sick.

I felt like I was on a holiday!

I would like to close my column with a few subjects that concern me. Bullying and any forms of abuse, sexual, verbal or physical.

The fact that innocent children are committing suicide due to bullying appalls me. With technology being what it is, where are the parents? Please monitor your children’s computers. Maybe it would be better for children not to have smart phones?

I think there should be a law stating only people of legal age can have any smart phone. I know that would be impossible to enforce. Maybe the parents should be punished too.

The forms of abuse I referred to are also getting out of hand. I have someone researching this, and I will be too. Hopefully, and article will be forthcoming.

In the mean time, please, keep your children safe.

Parents, be parents. The responsibility lies with you, but not you along. All adults are responsible.

It takes a village. Don’t forget that.

Thought for the Day: It is cold outside! Bundle up and keep warm!

Have a blessed time until we meet again.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10: Bible verse of the day,

9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
